- 0:15Welcome back everyone to Unreal Engine 5
- 0:17beginner's guide to building an
- 0:18environment. In the last lesson, we left
- 0:20it off by getting the base foundation of
- 0:22our bridge using the Quickixel assets.
- 0:26And this time we're going to continue
- 0:27working on it and actually set it up in
- 0:29a nice kind of way with some wooden
- 0:31poles and whatnot and get a real nice
- 0:33looking bridge to have within our
- 0:35scenery. So let's go ahead and do that.
- 0:37We're going to go back onto the 3D
- 0:39assets folder. Now we're going to make
- 0:41use out of our assets. So I'm thinking
- 0:44that we can start with Yeah, let's go
- 0:47ahead and start with the wooden beams.
- 0:49So we have uh three variations right now
- 0:52downloaded from the quicksel wooden
- 0:54beam. the first one. Let's go ahead and
- 0:56simply add it onto our level just to see
- 0:59how this looks like. Just going to drag
- 1:01it up from the ground itself. So, I'm
- 1:04just going to pick it up just a little
- 1:06bit so we can see how it looks like. And
- 1:08now, let's go and get all the other
- 1:11variations of this beam as well. Just
- 1:14going to drag it up. And then a third
- 1:17one like so.
- 1:20So, these ones look quite nice. And
- 1:23actually, let's go ahead and make use
- 1:24out of them right away. Thinking that
- 1:26maybe for the first one, we're just
- 1:28going to make use out of these couple
- 1:30ones that we have. So,
- 1:34this and this one over here.
- 1:37And then for this one, we're actually
- 1:39going to want to make use out of it for
- 1:40the base foundation of underneath the
- 1:43bridge because right now it doesn't look
- 1:45quite as nice when it's just kind of
- 1:47flat underneath. Even if we're looking
- 1:49from the overview type of a camera,
- 1:52we're not going to have quite as nice of
- 1:54a look. So, what I'm thinking is we're
- 1:55just going to rotate one of the beams,
- 1:58the most the lightest one that we have.
- 2:00Probably this one is quite short and
- 2:02quite nice to use. So, I'm just going to
- 2:04rotate it 90° just like that. And just
- 2:07going to position it to be right above
- 2:12our area for the bridge. We'll start
- 2:15with the one that's on a a bit of a
- 2:16higher level. I think that's going to be
- 2:19quite all right. When we're placing it,
- 2:21we got to make sure that this end
- 2:23doesn't go out too far off. So, only
- 2:25like half of the way for the plank since
- 2:28when it usually is getting built these
- 2:31sort of bridges. You get a plank
- 2:33slightly extended on the back just like
- 2:36that. So, that's going to look quite
- 2:38nice. And looking at it now, we might
- 2:40need to squish this entire plank down
- 2:42just a little bit like so. And even
- 2:46bring it to the side just like that. So,
- 2:48we're going to get a really nice wide
- 2:51squished up sort of a plank. And now we
- 2:53can just put it just to the side like
- 2:56so. And just like that, we're getting a
- 2:59really nice result. We might want to
- 3:01make it just a little bit thicker just
- 3:03so it'll be kind of sitting those planks
- 3:06sitting on the side. Just like that. And
- 3:08I'm going to bring it to the side like
- 3:10so. Now I'm trying to think how we're
- 3:13going to place these main foundations
- 3:15for those edges of our planks. And I'm
- 3:18thinking that maybe we might just want
- 3:20to make this even wider like so. And
- 3:23this way it'll look like the bottom of
- 3:26this foundation is sitting at the base
- 3:28of this plank, which is going to look
- 3:30quite nice. So now, even if we're
- 3:32looking from this kind of an angle, it's
- 3:34just going to look really nice. I think
- 3:36actually maybe we want to make it we
- 3:38want to make this a little bit thinner.
- 3:40So let's go ahead and select it. And I'm
- 3:43just going to lower this down by quite a
- 3:46bit. And just bring it up like so.
- 3:50And maybe just a little bit wider. Just
- 3:54a little bit like so. Not too wide
- 3:56though. I think that's going to help us
- 3:58get a really nice silhouette overall. I
- 4:00think that's going to look quite nice.
- 4:02Let's just make sure we're putting it on
- 4:04the right kind of ends.
- 4:07And let's see if we get some nice edges
- 4:10for those planks going from the side. So
- 4:13already is looking quite nice right now.
- 4:16Although the color is looking a little
- 4:17bit off. We're going to be fixing that
- 4:19in a bit. First of all, we just got to
- 4:21make sure that we're getting a really
- 4:22nice shape out of them. So right like
- 4:26this. And of course, we're going to make
- 4:28sure that it goes all the way to the
- 4:30back. Otherwise, it's not going to look
- 4:31quite as nice. So, let's just extend
- 4:32this by a little bit and put this to the
- 4:35back. We might have extended it a little
- 4:37bit too much, though. So, let's go ahead
- 4:39and bring this back and just put it like
- 4:41this. We don't have to worry about it
- 4:44kind of looping into this plank because
- 4:46we're not going to be seeing this edge.
- 4:47So, it kind of helps us out a little bit
- 4:50in hiding the edge. And right now, we
- 4:53are getting some nice result. Might want
- 4:56to actually bring it upwards a little
- 4:59bit.
- 5:00I'm going to do just that. Going to
- 5:02bring it up like so.
- 5:05And I think that's going to look quite
- 5:07nice all in all. All right. So now
- 5:10before moving on, actually I like to
- 5:12kind of bring this back just a little
- 5:15bit. And on the other end as well. And
- 5:18this way. Going to make sure I select
- 5:21only one of them, which doesn't seem to
- 5:24be working because it's not the issue of
- 5:26having it grouped up. What we're having
- 5:29right now is we accidentally placed a
- 5:32static mesh, one of the static meshes
- 5:34into its details tab. So, it treats us
- 5:37as a sort of a blueprint. So, what I'm
- 5:39going to do actually, I'm going to
- 5:40select one of the static meshes in the
- 5:42right corner like so. And I can see it
- 5:45only has one selection. And now I'm just
- 5:47going to delete it and redo the
- 5:49duplication. So, I'm just going to make
- 5:50sure I have this selected. Hold alt and
- 5:53kind of drag this out to the side like
- 5:55so. So, this is just an easy fix. And
- 5:58now we have them separated and we can
- 6:00now move them a little bit more to the
- 6:02back. Like so. I think that's going to
- 6:03look much nicer overall. But of course,
- 6:07we got to make sure that these will then
- 6:09be able to kind of sit a little bit more
- 6:12to the back as well. So, I'm just going
- 6:14to select them and actually going to
- 6:17bring them back like so. That might look
- 6:19a little better. But, of course, we got
- 6:21to set them up with these foundations.
- 6:24So, let's go ahead and do that. So, I'm
- 6:26going to actually grab one of them,
- 6:28bring it to the side like so. And now,
- 6:31just going to position it in a way that
- 6:33would be made use out of in this area.
- 6:36So, actually might just want to go grab
- 6:39both of them at once and then extend
- 6:42them by quite a bit and then see how it
- 6:44looks going to look like. So, already
- 6:46it's going to look quite nice. I'm going
- 6:47to delete this and then just see how
- 6:50it's going to get to look like within
- 6:53this end.
- 6:54So, we might want to extend it by quite
- 6:56a bit. And I think that's all right. We
- 6:58don't have to worry about it sticking it
- 7:00too much in the ground. We just have to
- 7:03look at the overall result and see if it
- 7:05looks quite nice. And I think this might
- 7:08look really nice, but we might want to
- 7:11make it just a little bit thicker. So,
- 7:12the way I'm going to do it is I'm going
- 7:14to click R and I'm going to hold the
- 7:17area in between the red and the green
- 7:18zones. And then I'm just going to extend
- 7:21these two like so. So in this way, we're
- 7:23getting a much thicker type of a pole.
- 7:26So I think this is going to look much
- 7:29nicer overall. So now we need to do the
- 7:32same thing for this one as well. Just
- 7:34going to grab it to the other end like
- 7:36so.
- 7:38Position it in a way that would be
- 7:41covering this hole over here. Going to
- 7:44delete this one.
- 7:47Just like that.
- 7:49And I'm going to, of course, make sure I
- 7:51stretch it out. Just like that. So now,
- 7:55let's just make sure that it is being
- 7:57placed right underneath the plank that
- 8:01we had right in the middle. I think
- 8:03that's going to look quite nice. Going
- 8:05to bring it up just a little bit like
- 8:07so. And already it is looking quite
- 8:10nice. So now, the easiest way to get
- 8:13some variations out of these and make
- 8:15sure it doesn't look too repetitive is
- 8:17if you grab both of them and click
- 8:19Ctrl+G just to make sure that they're in
- 8:21the middle. Ctrl G. There you go. Now
- 8:24I'm going to hold Alt, duplicate it by
- 8:26dragging it outwards like so. Delete the
- 8:29previous poles that we had as a
- 8:30placement. And now, of course, they're
- 8:33going to look too similar. So what we're
- 8:34going to do is we're going to hit E.
- 8:36While they're grouped up, the gizmo is
- 8:38going to be positioned right in between
- 8:39those two. And now if we were to rotate
- 8:42it, we're going to get some really nice
- 8:44results. So there you go. Now we're
- 8:46going to select them individually just
- 8:48like that. So now what we're going to do
- 8:50is click W, hold alt, and make a
- 8:53duplicate just like that. So of course
- 8:55it's going to look exactly the same as
- 8:58the duplicates for now. We're just going
- 9:00to delete the foundations, the
- 9:03placeholders. Now we got to make sure we
- 9:05rotate them properly. Okay. So, let's go
- 9:06ahead and simply grab each one of them
- 9:09individually and just rotate it by
- 9:11either like 90° or 180° sideways like
- 9:15so. This way, we're going to get a
- 9:17different pattern in comparison to our
- 9:20previous pieces. And actually, I want to
- 9:23I want to make sure I get the same kind
- 9:26of result. So, what I'm going to do is
- 9:27I'm even going to delete this one and
- 9:29just make a duplicate out of the one
- 9:31that we had previously. or even just
- 9:33going to click Ctrl Z and make sure that
- 9:36it is placed within the right position
- 9:38like so. Then delete the other one. So
- 9:40this way we're going to get a much nicer
- 9:42kind of a look. And now I think we can
- 9:45even set them up for the sides. But I'm
- 9:48looking at this type of a wood beam and
- 9:52this might actually look a little bit
- 9:53too clean for our bridge because
- 9:56obviously we're going to have a lot of
- 9:57water underneath. There's going to be
- 9:59some waves smashing in into them and
- 10:01whatnot. And the entire bridge already
- 10:03looks quite worn out. So this looks a
- 10:06little bit out of place. So I think I'm
- 10:07just going to make use out of one
- 10:09variation. I'm going to grab the ones I
- 10:12have done for this variation, delete
- 10:14them, and later on we're going to make
- 10:16use out of um I think for the roof or
- 10:18something of that sort. But for now, I'm
- 10:20just going to make sure I place them up
- 10:22in the right kind of position as we had
- 10:24them previously. So over here. And I'm
- 10:28going to grab this one as well and place
- 10:30it just like that. So, this is going to
- 10:33be looking much nicer, I reckon. Of
- 10:36course, we got to rotate them around a
- 10:38little bit. Make sure we have a nice
- 10:42variation in between those two. And just
- 10:44by rotating them around and flipping
- 10:46them up like that, we're able to get so
- 10:48much variation out of it. It's actually
- 10:49going to look quite nice. So, just
- 10:51making sure that we're replacing every
- 10:54single one of them like so.
- 10:57And it's relatively easy to do and
- 10:59simple. So just by doing that, we're
- 11:01able to get some nice results out of it
- 11:03all. And just like that, I think we can
- 11:07also Yeah, let's go ahead and replace
- 11:09these one. These ones as well. We're
- 11:11going to grab a couple of those. Alt
- 11:13alt, drag them out like so. And replace
- 11:16them just like that. And final the final
- 11:19one. Maybe we want we might want to grab
- 11:24this one to be a bit further up, but
- 11:26maybe not. Let's go ahead and keep this
- 11:27as is. And then finally, of course, we
- 11:30got to rotate this around like this. 90°
- 11:33will do. And it's looking quite nice.
- 11:37Just going to grab a couple of those.
- 11:39Bring it to the side. Actually, we just
- 11:42needed one. So, I'm just going to delete
- 11:44one of them like so. Just like that. and
- 11:47bring this to this bit as well. So just
- 11:51like that we have some nice variation
- 11:53and it already is looking quite nice as
- 11:56a bridge. Now of course the bridge as it
- 11:59is now looks quite plain and quite
- 12:02basic. The shape itself is just too much
- 12:04of a simple looking. So in the next
- 12:07lesson we're going to learn how we can
- 12:09break up this entire shape its
- 12:11silhouette and how to set up a more
- 12:13interesting look for the bridge. So,
- 12:16thank you so much for watching and I'll
- 12:17see you in a bit.
