10 Minimalist Rules That Changed My Life — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I used to feel really stuck in my life
- 0:02and unmotivated I'd always try these
- 0:04extreme things to change my life 30 day
- 0:07challenges that I saw other people doing
- 0:08but over the past few years I've built
- 0:10some small simple rules for myself that
- 0:13have really improved my day-to-day life
- 0:15and I hope it can improve yours as well
- 0:17the house on fire rule recently on our
- 0:20trip through Europe British Airways lost
- 0:22our luggage we kept our backpacks but we
- 0:25lost all of our clothes and it was at
- 0:27that point I had a really cool
- 0:28realization I didn't really care about
- 0:31any of that stuff it didn't make any
- 0:33difference to me if I never saw all my
- 0:34clothes again it wouldn't really matter
- 0:36so I've been practicing this rule
- 0:37recently and the rule is think about
- 0:39your attic or your closet your storage
- 0:42unit whatever it is what would happen if
- 0:45it just went away it evaporated Into
- 0:47Thin Air your house burned down and you
- 0:49lost all that stuff would you actually
- 0:51be relieved are you overly attached to
- 0:53it does your stuff actually kind of own
- 0:56you a little bit for me I had this
- 0:58realization there's a few things in my
- 0:59house that I wouldn't love to lose for
- 1:02the most part it wouldn't really affect
- 1:03me as a person my happiness levels
- 1:06anything if my house burned down and
- 1:07that's a really freaking concept because
- 1:09the stuff we own ends up owning us so
- 1:12the more stuff I've gotten rid of the
- 1:13more like calm and mental Clarity of
- 1:16ended up having in my life the 2020 rule
- 1:19or just in case I think I first heard
- 1:21this rule from the minimalist but
- 1:23especially in my beginning stages of
- 1:26decluttering when I was going through a
- 1:27bunch of stuff and I realized that we
- 1:29have so many things that we hang on to
- 1:31for just in case just in case people
- 1:33come over just in case I need to make 18
- 1:35cups of coffee at once just in case I go
- 1:37up a size or I go down a size we've got
- 1:39all of this stuff for just in case so as
- 1:42you're decluttering you're trying to
- 1:43figure out what to get rid of if you can
- 1:45replace an item for twenty dollars in
- 1:48under 20 minutes then just let it go
- 1:50obviously without being wasteful but
- 1:52when I've used this Rule and I've
- 1:53exercised this there really hasn't been
- 1:55one thing that I've actually needed to
- 1:57replace so if you're on the edge with
- 1:59something use the 2020 rule if it fits
- 2:01in there just let it go the Box rule
- 2:04this Rule and actually the last two are
- 2:07my absolute favorite rules so make sure
- 2:08you stick around for those but the Box
- 2:10rule kind of expands on the last one
- 2:11where if you're going through
- 2:12decluttering stuff you're unsure about
- 2:14it maybe it doesn't fit in the 2020 rule
- 2:16throw it in a box put it in your attic
- 2:18put it in the garage and set a reminder
- 2:20on your phone for like six months from
- 2:22now that you will go through that box
- 2:24and decide that so this is for the
- 2:26people who have a hard time getting rid
- 2:27of stuff and you're like well I'm not
- 2:29getting rid of it I'm just putting it in
- 2:30a box and when that time comes maybe six
- 2:32months from now and you realize that you
- 2:34haven't gone to that box because clearly
- 2:36you didn't need anything out of it you
- 2:37have two choices you can either go
- 2:39through it and decide to sell or
- 2:41declutter it or you can just take the
- 2:42entire box and donate the entire box
- 2:44because clearly you don't need anything
- 2:46that's in there so if you want to trick
- 2:48yourself into cluttering this is a great
- 2:50by the way if you're enjoying this and
- 2:51getting some value don't forget to
- 2:52subscribe it's free and I only post once
- 2:55a week so I won't clutter up your
- 2:56YouTube feed the two day rule I'm pretty
- 2:59sure I already originally learned this
- 3:00one from Matt this rule is super simple
- 3:03it's pretty much that you're not going
- 3:04to miss a new habit two days in a row
- 3:06for me I use this a couple different
- 3:07ways I read a page of a book every
- 3:09single morning and it's okay if I miss
- 3:11one day because I've got an appointment
- 3:13in the morning or whatever's going on
- 3:15but I can never miss two days in a row
- 3:17and that has kept that habit extremely
- 3:20consistent for over a year now I also
- 3:23use this with going to the gym where I'm
- 3:24going to do some type of exercise every
- 3:26day and it's okay if I miss one day but
- 3:28I can never miss two in a row but it
- 3:30also keeps you from like falling off the
- 3:31bandwagon for habits that you really
- 3:33want to keep the investing rule this is
- 3:36a rule that I've like followed but I
- 3:37don't I don't really know what to call
- 3:39it if you have any ideas let me know I
- 3:40just called it the investor rule but
- 3:42pretty much instead of investing into
- 3:44stuff into into random books what is
- 3:47this hence Christian Andersen I didn't
- 3:49even know we had that these are Meredith
- 3:51books by the way we should be investing
- 3:52into experiences investing into stuff
- 3:55has generally led me to being more like
- 3:58stressed it all takes up space and my
- 4:00mind it doesn't really make me happy
- 4:01even when you buy a new car it's cool
- 4:03for a little bit and then it's just a
- 4:04car again same thing with clothes and
- 4:07most things but experiences really help
- 4:10change you as a person they're great
- 4:12memory they help you learn and expand
- 4:14your horizons so I've been really
- 4:15focusing on taking that money that I'm
- 4:17not spending on stuff and investing it
- 4:19into travel for holidays we gift each
- 4:21other experiences instead of gifting
- 4:23each other like random crap that we
- 4:25don't need and that should be like
- 4:26literally in our budget is to invest
- 4:28money and experiences
- 4:31have a home rule I really gotta get
- 4:34better at naming these things this is
- 4:36this is embarrassing if stuff does not
- 4:38have a home in my house I just get rid
- 4:41of it since I took the time and I found
- 4:43a place for everything to go I've
- 4:45stopped losing my wallet stop losing my
- 4:47keys my phone has a place to go all my
- 4:49clothes have places to go all the toys
- 4:51have places that they go everything in
- 4:53my house has a place where it belongs
- 4:55and if it doesn't have a place where it
- 4:56belongs it probably does not belong in
- 4:58my house and because it'll end up on the
- 5:00counter it'll end up strewn all over the
- 5:02place and if it doesn't have a place
- 5:04strongly consider getting rid of it like
- 5:06this is just a good overall rule that if
- 5:08it doesn't have a place where it belongs
- 5:09and it's always just sitting around you
- 5:11probably don't need it other people rule
- 5:13a lot of times we do things either
- 5:15consciously or subconsciously for other
- 5:18people when we're getting the newest
- 5:19iPhone it's partly because we want that
- 5:21new flashy thing but it's partly because
- 5:23you can kind of show off it's cool to
- 5:25have it's a status simple same thing
- 5:27with maybe a pair of shoes or a car or
- 5:29the house in the neighborhood or closed
- 5:31part of it's for you and part of it is
- 5:33for other people even like posting to
- 5:34social media unless it's like for work a
- 5:37lot of that is just to get some
- 5:38validation from your day for other
- 5:40people and kind of make yourself feel
- 5:42better because maybe you're not having a
- 5:43great day and you want people to tell
- 5:44you how great you look or how hard
- 5:46you're working or or whatever so this
- 5:48one actually took me a while to get out
- 5:49of but instead of worrying about what
- 5:52other people think especially when I'm
- 5:53buying stuff I've been really focusing
- 5:55on wants versus needs is this something
- 5:57that I actually need or do I want it
- 6:00because X Y and Z because maybe people
- 6:03think it's cool like when I spilled
- 6:05water on my laptop I realize that I
- 6:07didn't need a second laptop I was able
- 6:09to share Meredith's for like a year
- 6:11almost and then when we went to travel
- 6:13and I needed to edit while I was
- 6:15traveling I bought a laptop because I
- 6:16needed it not because it was like ah
- 6:18that'd be cool to have I don't really
- 6:20care what other people think I'm doing
- 6:22what is best for me I don't really care
- 6:24the 90 rule I use this rule two
- 6:26different ways first when I'm looking at
- 6:28stuff to buy I try not to buy it unless
- 6:30it is a 90 or above so 1 out of 100 does
- 6:34this shirt reach a 90 for me does it fit
- 6:36well will I wear it a ton and if it's
- 6:39below there I'm not gonna buy it and as
- 6:42a result every shirt that I own is my
- 6:44favorite shirt I can reach my hand in
- 6:45grab it I love it I used to have a lot
- 6:47of stuff that was maybe 60 70 and be
- 6:50like oh that's pretty cool yeah I like
- 6:51that yeah it's not bad and I never wore
- 6:53it because I would wear my favorite
- 6:54stuff and now everything's my favorite
- 6:55stuff and since I found all my favorite
- 6:57stuff I I don't really buy anything
- 6:58anymore so that's really strict criteria
- 7:01to buy pretty much everything in your
- 7:02house and while sometimes that might
- 7:03mean spending a little more money to get
- 7:05a more quality thing in the long run at
- 7:08least for me I've spent a lot less money
- 7:10because I don't shop ever like for
- 7:12anything like obviously I need some
- 7:14stuff but I I don't like cycle through
- 7:16anything anymore and then the second way
- 7:18to use this is when somebody asks you to
- 7:20do something an opportunity comes up is
- 7:22that a 90 yearbook is it a heck yes and
- 7:25if it's not then it's a no and doing
- 7:28that has cleared up my calendar
- 7:29incredibly I do so much less stuff now
- 7:32the two minute rule I think I've done a
- 7:34whole video on this let's give you the
- 7:35quick version life-changing rule if
- 7:37something takes two minutes or less just
- 7:39do it put away the dishes clean up your
- 7:42room bring that thing upstairs that's
- 7:43been sitting on the staircase for a
- 7:44month finish that repair put on your
- 7:46workout clothes and go sit in the car
- 7:48only commit to the smallest thing
- 7:49possible and by doing that you'll trick
- 7:51yourself into doing the big stuff and
- 7:52you just clear up like a bunch of crap
- 7:54that you've been avoiding the nightly
- 7:55reset every night before bed I walk
- 7:58through and I reset my house I lay out
- 8:00my clothes for the night before I load
- 8:02or unload the dishwasher so we never
- 8:03leave any dishes around fill up my
- 8:05Kettle so that I can make coffee by just
- 8:07clicking the button in the morning I lay
- 8:09out the book that I'm going to read I
- 8:10set up my next day for Success the night
- 8:13before and it's been life-changing
- 8:14almost as life-changing as subscribing
- 8:17to this channel because trying to hit
- 8:19half a million by the end of the year so
- 8:20thank you to everybody who has
- 8:22subscribed and I'll see you next week
