  9. 0:20to see our understanding of street art

  11. 0:24frankly we can't imagine our lives
  12. 0:27without it well hello everybody it's

  19. 0:43of history before going on this journey
  20. 0:45now we can't pinpoint how it all started
  21. 0:47however we can go back in time to the
  22. 0:50decade that changed everything it was in
  23. 0:52the late 1960s and graffiti an art genre
  24. 0:56that consists of writing or drawing in
  25. 0:58public spaces usually without permission
  26. 1:00started booming in the upper west side
  27. 1:03of manhattan where artists would come to
  28. 1:05spray their name and a number reflecting
  29. 1:07the street they lived on in a raging war
  30. 1:10for style recognition
  31. 1:12artists took over the new york city
  32. 1:14subway system painting all the trains
  33. 1:16from top to bottom soon after during the
  34. 1:19early 90s the movement started to see
  35. 1:21new types of signatures appear from
  36. 1:24abstraction to new concepts the message
  37. 1:27became the mean
  38. 1:2840 years later graffiti is now a genre
  39. 1:31within the street art movement that
  40. 1:33doesn't have to hide it's thriving and
  41. 1:36shines by its constant renewal
  42. 1:39known as one of the best cities in the
  43. 1:41world to see street art and graffiti the
  44. 1:43walls of buenos aires in argentina have
  45. 1:46been used as a tool for communication
  46. 1:48and expression for as long as anyone can
  47. 1:50remember the turbulent history of the
  48. 1:53city and its complicated relationship
  49. 1:55with repression and expression neutered

  74. 3:00display their art while creating a sense
  75. 3:02of belonging among citizens towards
  76. 3:04their public spaces this facilitates
  77. 3:07coexistence and leads to respect for the
  78. 3:09common heritage and the recognition that
  79. 3:12the street is an extension of our home
  80. 3:15which we must all take care of and
  81. 3:17respect
  82. 3:20in a little island in the caribbean
  83. 3:22muralism a form of street art has been
  84. 3:25taking its streets by storm in an effort
  85. 3:28to democratize art the collective los

  101. 4:06paints men preferably fat and hairy ones

  104. 4:14masculinity
  105. 4:16known as the largest open-air gallery in
  106. 4:18the world the east side gallery in
  107. 4:21berlin offers more than a mural for
  108. 4:23curious visitors and art enthusiasts
  109. 4:26months after the fall of the berlin wall
  110. 4:28in 1989 more than 118 artists from 21
  111. 4:33countries came together to create 106
  112. 4:35unique motives to express joy for the
  113. 4:39end of the cold war in europe a moment
  114. 4:42that signified new beginnings healing
  115. 4:45and unity
  116. 4:46for zara almadi the first time she ever
  117. 4:49made a street mural was out of necessity
  118. 4:52a wall across from her house was
  119. 4:53vandalized with some offensive words so
  120. 4:56she took some paint and began to cover
  121. 4:58up the wall since that day she hasn't
  122. 5:00been able to put down her tins of spray
  123. 5:02paint for her street art provides a
  124. 5:05space for women and those who detach
  125. 5:07from the social hierarchy of success the
  126. 5:11art world relies on and provides a sense
  127. 5:13of agency that goes a long way
  128. 5:17in dakar senegal a collective of artists
  129. 5:20known as doxandum squad are also joining
  130. 5:23the street art movement but in their
  131. 5:25very own unique way
  132. 5:27each year and for four consecutive
  133. 5:29weekends since 2008 artists and health
  134. 5:32technicians come together for one sole
  135. 5:35purpose
  136. 5:36raise awareness among low-income
  137. 5:38populations about serious illness and
  138. 5:41health problems the partnership fosters
  139. 5:43the commitment and collaboration of
  140. 5:45artists around the needs of their
  141. 5:47community
  142. 5:48part of the filipino street art project
  143. 5:51a transmedia undertaking that celebrates
  144. 5:53the power of street art ray cruz fell in
  145. 5:56love with the art medium because of its
  146. 5:58inclusivity its endless possibilities of
  147. 6:01exposition meant that everyone could
  148. 6:03enjoy his art whether they could afford
  149. 6:05to go to a museum or not his art which
