- 0:00You could have all the hormones in the
- 0:02human body and tens of thousands of
- 0:04calories coming in every day and if you
- 0:06simply remove one single hormone, it is
- 0:09impossible for that person to get fat.
- 0:12Totally and completely impossible. You
- 0:14simply wipe out a person's insulin, it
- 0:17is completely impossible for them to get
- 0:19fat.
- 0:20>> In this video, Dr. Ben Bickman, the
- 0:22world's leading insulin expert, reveals
- 0:25four things about weight loss most
- 0:27people never find out. Why insulin, not
- 0:30calories, is the only real switch for
- 0:33fat loss. The morning effect sabotaging
- 0:36your fat burning [music] before
- 0:37breakfast even begins.
- 0:39The one simple change you can make
- 0:41tomorrow to lose weight faster.
- 0:43And the hidden reason most people do
- 0:45everything right and still can't lose
- 0:47weight.
- 0:48Most people have no idea their insulin
- 0:50is chronically elevated because their
- 0:53doctor has never tested [music] for it
- 0:55and never will.
- 0:56That means the person next to you,
- 0:59the person you ate lunch with today,
- 1:01probably you.
- 1:03Normal blood sugar. Normal blood
- 1:05pressure.
- 1:06>> [music]
- 1:06>> People who think they're fine. All of
- 1:08them silently storing fat they can't
- 1:11explain. Insulin resistance has been
- 1:13controlling your weight, your hunger,
- 1:15and your [music] fat storage possibly
- 1:17for decades.
- 1:19And the reason almost nobody escapes it
- 1:21is because [music] everything we've been
- 1:23told about how to fix it is completely
- 1:25wrong.
- 1:26Dr. Bickman has spent his entire career
- 1:29studying exactly one thing.
- 1:31Insulin and what it does [music] to the
- 1:33human body.
- 1:34What he's found will change everything
- 1:36you think you know about weight loss.
- 1:38Now here's something that will stop you
- 1:40mid-thought.
- 1:41It is physically impossible for a fat
- 1:44[music] cell to grow unless insulin is
- 1:46elevated. Not difficult, impossible.
- 1:48[music]
- 1:49And that's not an opinion. That's what
- 1:52happens in Dr. Bickman's own lab every
- 1:54single day. Insulin as a hormone is the
- 1:57one metabolic hormone to rule them all.
- 2:00It will determine what the body does
- 2:01with energy at every single cell. This
- 2:03is a principle even many very educated
- 2:06clinicians don't understand. And insulin
- 2:08is so determined to store energy that it
- 2:11will slow the metabolic engine of the
- 2:13body down in order to store more.
- 2:16>> [music]
- 2:16>> Fat cells sitting in a sea of calories
- 2:19and they don't grow.
- 2:20Not until insulin shows up. If insulin
- 2:23is high, your body stores fat. [music]
- 2:25If insulin is low, your body burns it.
- 2:28That's the entire equation.
- 2:30But Dr. Bickman says the most powerful
- 2:32proof isn't in a lab dish.
- 2:34>> [music]
- 2:34>> It's in a human case study so striking
- 2:37most doctors refuse to talk about it.
- 2:39>> You have people with type 1 diabetes.
- 2:41Imagine the temptation.
- 2:43Let's say you're a young woman who faces
- 2:45more pressure than her than her young
- 2:47men counterparts. She just gets
- 2:49diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and she
- 2:51has become used to eating whatever she
- 2:53wants and being very very skinny. That
- 2:56is one of the cardinal signs of type 1
- 2:57diabetes. The person is just losing
- 2:59weight. In fact, the early the ancients
- 3:02thought that as they were making so much
- 3:05urine cuz another feature of type 1
- 3:06diabetes in an in an untreated state is
- 3:09they urinate a lot. That's what the word
- 3:10diabetes means. It means polyuria or a
- 3:13lot of urine for formation. They thought
- 3:15that their flesh, their fat, their
- 3:17substance was turning into liquid and
- 3:19excreting from their bodies. And so the
- 3:21person this this Imagine this young
- 3:23woman, she's say 13 years old. She is
- 3:26super super skinny, which she likes
- 3:28because there's such a pressure to be
- 3:30skinny. And she can also at the same
- 3:32time eat whatever she wants.
- 3:34And then, but of course she feels
- 3:36miserable. And indeed it will kill her.
- 3:38So, she gets diagnosed with type 1
- 3:40diabetes and she's put on insulin
- 3:42therapy and two things happen.
- 3:44She starts eating less
- 3:46and getting fat. In fact, they gain
- 3:49people will gain so much weight that if
- 3:51they're in the hospital for a few days,
- 3:53they can't leave the hospital with the
- 3:55same clothes they came in. That's not to
- 3:56say they're leaving and then and they're
- 3:58obese, but they can have easily gained
- 4:0010 lb, 15 lb of fat.
- 4:03So, this phenomenon is known and you
- 4:05have people with type 1 diabetes who
- 4:06abuse that fact and will deliberately
- 4:09underdose their insulin so they can eat
- 4:11whatever they want. They could go to a
- 4:13Thanksgiving or a Christmas dinner and
- 4:16indulge in all the sweets and just
- 4:19simply underdose their insulin and be as
- 4:21skinny as they want to be. Now, there's
- 4:23disastrous metabolic consequences,
- 4:26but it's just a testament to the power
- 4:27of insulin.
- 4:28>> They can eat as much as they want and
- 4:30they [music] stay thin
- 4:31because insulin is low.
- 4:33That's not a diet tip. That's proof of a
- 4:36biological law.
- 4:38So, the question isn't how do I eat
- 4:40less?
- 4:41The real question is, how do I keep
- 4:43insulin low?
- 4:45But before we get to the fix, there's
- 4:47something happening to your body right
- 4:49now that most people never find out
- 4:51about [music]
- 4:52and it's been quietly working against
- 4:54you every single morning.
- 4:56Because when insulin stops working
- 4:58properly, it doesn't just affect one
- 5:00system. It affects every system.
- 5:03And the diseases that follow look
- 5:05completely unrelated until you
- 5:07understand the one thing they all have
- 5:09in common. Within the US, there's has
- 5:11been this game show over the years
- 5:12called The Biggest Loser.
- 5:14These people one lose a fantastic amount
- 5:16of weight and yet you never see them
- 5:18again
- 5:19because they gain it all back.
- 5:21So, if your weight loss strategy is
- 5:23based on cutting calories without
- 5:25addressing insulin, which is the other
- 5:27of the two variables,
- 5:29then you're going to be hungry. Dr.
- 5:31David Ludwig at Harvard, a friend and
- 5:33colleague and collaborator,
- 5:35he published a report looking at the
- 5:36same kind of dynamic that I outlined a
- 5:38moment ago
- 5:39two isocaloric or equal calorie meals
- 5:42and he found that when they ate the meal
- 5:45that spiked insulin, the what he called
- 5:48I think he called it total energy
- 5:49availability. So, they measured every
- 5:52calorie molecule in the blood. So,
- 5:54ketones, you know, BHB, they measured
- 5:57lactate, they measured fats, they
- 5:59measured glucose, and they found that
- 6:01with the insulin spiking meal, the total
- 6:04energy availability went down. What does
- 6:06that mean? Yeah, so in other words, with
- 6:07the increase in insulin, as I noted a
- 6:09moment ago, insulin is so determined to
- 6:11store energy that it is directing
- 6:14calories to go from the blood to be
- 6:16stored in tissues like fat or in the
- 6:18liver. To make you fat. Yeah, and indeed
- 6:21it would, but the problem is the brain
- 6:23doesn't have that storage capacity. You
- 6:25know, you could have big fat cells with
- 6:26lots of energy. You could have a liver
- 6:28with tons of fat and glycogen, which is
- 6:31a stored form of glucose, ready to go.
- 6:34But the brain doesn't have a big storage
- 6:36reservoir, and yet it has a high
- 6:38metabolic rate. And so, the brain is
- 6:40constantly relying on the energy in the
- 6:43blood that it can use, especially
- 6:45glucose and ketones, the two primary
- 6:47fuels for the brain. And so, when you
- 6:49spike insulin,
- 6:51you lower your glucose,
- 6:52and you stop your liver from making
- 6:54ketones. So, the two main brain fuels
- 6:57have gone down. Which is why you get
- 6:59brain fog. This is not a weight problem.
- 7:02This is a hormonal crisis.
- 7:04And the good news is fixing the hormone
- 7:06fixes [music] everything downstream,
- 7:09which is exactly what the rest of this
- 7:10video is going to show you how to do.
- 7:12>> [music]
- 7:13>> Starting with the one morning mistake
- 7:15that's making all of it worse.
- 7:17Every morning, [music] a few hours
- 7:19before you wake up, your body releases
- 7:21cortisol.
- 7:22This is normal. [music] It's your body
- 7:24preparing for the day, raising blood
- 7:26sugar, bringing your brain online.
- 7:29But here's the problem.
- 7:31Cortisol [music] raises insulin.
- 7:33An elevated insulin in the morning means
- 7:36your body is already primed to [music]
- 7:37store fat before breakfast even begins.
- 7:41Dr. Bikman calls this the dawn effect.
- 7:44And what it means for your first meal is
- 7:46something most nutritionists will never
- 7:48tell you. You wake up in the morning,
- 7:51anyone who's wearing a continuous
- 7:52glucose monitor will find that their
- 7:54glucose levels naturally rise in the
- 7:56morning and that coincides with a mild
- 7:58state of insulin resistance every
- 8:00morning because of changes in cortisol
- 8:02and other hormones. So, my view is don't
- 8:05doubly load to the glucose that's
- 8:07already happening by eating in the
- 8:08morning with starchy sugary stuff.
- 8:11So, be very strict with all of your
- 8:12meals up until dinner. I think that the
- 8:15CG a CGM is one of the best ways for a
- 8:18person to make their own changes. So, if
- 8:21you put a CGM on your body, you're able
- 8:23to look at your phone and see what's
- 8:24happening in your blood. A CGM being a
- 8:26continuous glucose monitor.
- 8:27>> glucose monitor. So, you're getting a
- 8:29continuous measurement of your glucose
- 8:30levels. I have seen more people make
- 8:33changes of their own volition when they
- 8:35just are wearing a CGM and they don't
- 8:38need someone to be nagging them. You
- 8:39know, you're you have that internal
- 8:41motivation because you see what's
- 8:42happening in your own body. For anyone
- 8:43that's never tried it, I highly
- 8:44recommend it. Morning is a time of
- 8:46insulin resistance. [music]
- 8:48Any food you eat in those first couple
- 8:50of hours is far more likely to be stored
- 8:53as fat than burned as [music] energy.
- 8:55Oatmeal, cereal, toast, fruit juice.
- 8:59You're pouring sugar into a system
- 9:01already in fat [music] storage mode.
- 9:03Even coffee makes this worse when paired
- 9:05with carbs. So, what do you do instead?
- 9:09That's where the insulin trick comes in.
- 9:11And it's the simplest change of them
- 9:13all.
- 9:14Fasting is powerful, [music] but Dr.
- 9:16Bikman knows it isn't for everyone. So,
- 9:18he recommends something simpler.
- 9:21One decision about breakfast [music]
- 9:22that costs nothing and requires no
- 9:25willpower. So, first of all, zero to
- 9:28little to no carbs for um breakfast and
- 9:32lunch. So, any if a person wants to, as
- 9:34much protein and fat as they'd like. And
- 9:36I would especially for lunch, let lunch
- 9:39be your biggest meal. Change breakfast
- 9:41tomorrow. Not your whole diet, just
- 9:43breakfast tomorrow.
- 9:46Your body has [music] been fasting
- 9:47overnight. Insulin has come down.
- 9:50The single worst thing you can do at
- 9:52that moment is spike insulin immediately
- 9:55with sugar and starch.
- 9:56Wait. Use your morning energy. Walk.
- 10:00Plan your day.
- 10:02Push your first meal to late morning.
- 10:04Keep it protein-focused.
- 10:06Eggs, meat, fish. Nothing that [music]
- 10:09spikes insulin.
- 10:11But here's the thing most people miss.
- 10:13You can do all of this perfectly [music]
- 10:15and still fail. Because there's a hidden
- 10:18force working against you [music] every
- 10:20single night. And it explains why so
- 10:22many people do everything right and
- 10:24still can't lose weight. When you don't
- 10:27sleep enough, your body [music]
- 10:28interprets it as stress. Cortisol
- 10:30spikes, insulin follows, and cortisol
- 10:34doesn't just raise insulin. It goes
- 10:36directly to your brain and rewires your
- 10:39hunger signals. This is not a lack of
- 10:41willpower. This is chemistry.
- 10:44Dr. Bickman explains exactly what
- 10:46happens inside your brain when cortisol
- 10:49takes over. Cortisol's metabolic effects
- 10:52do affect the brain, and there it
- 10:55influences appetite and food cravings.
- 10:57And wouldn't you know it, it
- 10:58particularly increases cravings for
- 11:01carbohydrates.
- 11:02Cortisol crosses the blood-brain
- 11:04barrier, and once again binds to
- 11:06glucocorticoid receptors in the
- 11:08hypothalamus and the amygdala. These are
- 11:10both regions involved in hunger and
- 11:13reward. So, people feeling good about
- 11:16what they're doing. Now, in the
- 11:17hypothalamus, cortisol upregulates a
- 11:21protein called NPY, neuropeptide Y, and
- 11:24another one called agouti-related
- 11:27protein, AGRP. And these are increased
- 11:30in response to the
- 11:32the glucocorticoid the glucocorticoid
- 11:34response elements. And when they're
- 11:36activated, they stimulate appetite. At
- 11:39the same time, cortisol inhibits leptin
- 11:42signaling reducing satiety potentially.
- 11:45But separate from that regulation of
- 11:48appetite in the amygdala, cortisol
- 11:50enhances dopamine release. So increasing
- 11:53cravings for very palatable energy-dense
- 11:57foods. Your brain is chemically wired by
- 11:59cortisol to crave sugar. Not because
- 12:02you're weak, because one bad night of
- 12:05sleep triggers a cascade that kills
- 12:06satiety, spikes appetite, and makes junk
- 12:10food feel like a reward.
- 12:12Sleep isn't rest. Sleep [music] is
- 12:14metabolic maintenance. It's just as
- 12:17important as anything you eat. So here's
- 12:19what you now know that most adults
- 12:21don't.
- 12:22>> [music]
- 12:22>> Insulin resistance isn't just a weight
- 12:24problem. It's connected to Alzheimer's,
- 12:27infertility, heart disease,
- 12:29>> [music]
- 12:30>> and cancer. All from the same root.
- 12:33Fat cells cannot grow without insulin.
- 12:36Calories aren't the gatekeeper. Insulin
- 12:38is.
- 12:39And poor sleep chemically drives you
- 12:41toward the exact [music] foods that keep
- 12:43it elevated all day.
- 12:45The fix isn't another diet.
- 12:47It's understanding the one lever that
- 12:49controls everything and finally working
- 12:51with it.
- 12:52One change. Tomorrow morning, don't eat
- 12:55the moment you wake up. Let your
- 12:57overnight fast run longer. Skip the
- 13:00starchy breakfast. Give your body the
- 13:03window it needs to [music] finish what
- 13:04it started while you slept. Struggling
- 13:07to lose weight no matter what you try?
