- 0:00In the previous [music] chapter, we
- 0:01understood what it was to truly begin to
- 0:03reign
- 0:04over [music] independence.
- 0:07If we are truly reigning,
- 0:10then our fathers are reigning with us.
- 0:13But if we're not,
- 0:14then they feel shoved to the back of the
- 0:17line, forgotten, and mocked, and
- 0:19dishonored while we go on
- 0:22crowing about our successes. [music]
- 0:26First Corinthians chapter 5 verse 1.
- 0:29It is actually [music] reported
- 0:32that there is immorality among you,
- 0:35an immorality [music]
- 0:36of such a kind as does not exist even
- 0:39among the Gentiles,
- 0:41that someone has his father's wife.
- 0:45You have become arrogant
- 0:47and have not mourned
- 0:50instead, [music]
- 0:51so that the one who had done this deed
- 0:54would be removed from your midst.
- 0:58So, he's saying,
- 1:00"While you're crowing about all your
- 1:02successes, you're rich, you're
- 1:04successful, you're reigning." He said,
- 1:06"Actually, [music] you're rotting.
- 1:09There's horrible sin in the church, and
- 1:11you're not dealing with it."
- 1:15For I, on my part, though absent in body
- 1:19but present in spirit, have already
- 1:21judged him who has committed this as
- 1:23though I were present.
- 1:26Is Paul being presumptuous? No, he's
- 1:29not.
- 1:33In the name of the Lord Jesus, when you
- 1:36are assembled
- 1:37and I with you in spirit with the power
- 1:40of our Lord Jesus, I have decided to
- 1:44deliver such a one to Satan for the
- 1:46destruction of his flesh, so that his
- 1:49spirit may be saved in the day of the
- 1:51Lord Jesus.
- 1:53Now, this is what it looks like to build
- 1:55with wood, hay, and stubble
- 1:57to plaster over problems
- 2:00that can destroy the church if not
- 2:01resolved.
- 2:03And Paul is saying, "I'm not going to
- 2:04tolerate it."
- 2:07Your boasting is not good.
- 2:10What boasting?
- 2:11Boasting about all their successes.
- 2:14Boasting about their love.
- 2:16Do you not know that a little leaven
- 2:18leavens the whole lump of dough?
- 2:21Clean out the old leaven so that you may
- 2:24be a new lump just as you are in fact
- 2:27unleavened. For Christ, our Passover,
- 2:30also has been sanctified.
- 2:32Therefore, let us celebrate the feast
- 2:35not with old leaven nor with the leaven
- 2:37of malice and wickedness,
- 2:40but with the unleavened bread of
- 2:42sincerity and truth.
- 2:46I wrote you in my letter not to
- 2:47associate with immoral people. I did not
- 2:50at all mean with the immoral people of
- 2:53this world
- 2:55or with the covetous and swindlers or
- 2:58with idolaters, for then you would have
- 3:01to go out of the world.
- 3:03But actually, I wrote you not to
- 3:05associate with any so-called brother if
- 3:08he is an immoral person or covetous or
- 3:11an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard
- 3:14or a swindler, not even to eat with such
- 3:17a one.
- 3:19For what have I to do with judging
- 3:21outsiders?
- 3:23Do you not judge those who are within
- 3:25the church?
- 3:26But those who are outside, God judges.
- 3:29Remove the wicked man from among
- 3:31yourselves.
- 3:33So apparently, there was a letter that
- 3:35Paul wrote before 1 Corinthians.
- 3:38And he's saying, "You're disobedient. I
- 3:40already told you how to resolve this. I
- 3:43already told you what to do.
- 3:45And I wasn't at all suggesting, like
- 3:47they probably misconstrued his words,
- 3:50that you shouldn't associate with people
- 3:52in the world who are engaging in this.
- 3:56He said, "Otherwise, you'd have to leave
- 3:57the world." Which is an insight Paul
- 3:59thinks that the church should have
- 4:00interaction with the world in the place
- 4:03of business, in the marketplace.
- 4:05We should have interaction with ungodly
- 4:08people.
- 4:09But he's saying, "In the church, don't
- 4:12do not allow it.
- 4:13Your boasting is not good.
- 4:15You haven't begun to reign like you
- 4:17think you have.
- 4:18Cuz if you were really reigning, here
- 4:20again, you would be able to put that out
- 4:23and deal with it in a manner that brings
- 4:25glory to God and healing to the person
- 4:27and to those aggrieved.
- 4:30So, Paul's theme is still rebuking this
- 4:33church
- 4:35and saying, "You have gotten too big for
- 4:37your britches.
- 4:39You have forgotten what God has given
- 4:41you, and you have forgotten those
- 4:43through whom it came.
- 4:44Stay humble.
- 4:46This is an admonition to all of us.
- 4:48Each and every one of us in any capacity
- 4:51of ministry can become conceited [music]
- 4:54and self-assured, especially through the
- 4:56intoxication of so-called [music]
- 4:58success.
- 5:00And a test is how independent we are in
- 5:03that success.
- 5:05If we are bringing our fathers along
- 5:07with us, we're probably okay.
- 5:10But if we are starting to become lax and
- 5:13turn a blind eye toward unrepented sin,
- 5:16we're not okay. And if we are starting
- 5:18to reign without others, we are not
- 5:21okay. And if we are marked [music] by
- 5:24arrogance and boasting, we are not okay.
- 5:28And the undoing of all those things is
- 5:30what Paul thinks real reigning is.
- 5:34That's the kingdom of God that does not
- 5:37consist in words, but in power over all
- 5:40these things.
- 5:44>> [music]
- 5:54[music]
- 6:01>> Ah.
