- 0:00We're in 1 Corinthians [music] chap 11.
- 0:03And we need to remember that Paul's
- 0:05overarching theme of this entire letter
- 0:08is that he [music] wants to end
- 0:09divisions. He wants to foster unity. So
- 0:13he [music] is systematically dealing
- 0:15with the mindsets that create division
- 0:18and conversely the attitudes that
- 0:21preserve [music] unity and create
- 0:23legitimate unity. In chapter nine, he
- 0:26talked about how we should run in such a
- 0:28way as to win our brothers. Run in love.
- 0:33In chapter 8, he talked about how
- 0:36[music] knowledge puffs up. We all have
- 0:38knowledge, but if you're just knowing
- 0:40[music] in that way, you know nothing as
- 0:42you ought. But when you know in a way
- 0:45that is anchored in the primary goal of
- 0:48love, you know as you should. And in
- 0:51chapter 10, he also [music] talked about
- 0:53communion. And the pivotal thing we want
- 0:56to take from chapter 10 is that he is
- 0:59saying that we are the one loaf. That
- 1:02the body is the one loaf. And so when we
- 1:05are broken, we're not just broken in
- 1:08remembering Christ. We're broken in
- 1:10giving grace now. So we are expressions
- 1:14of Christ [music] when we give
- 1:15sacrificially to one another. We are
- 1:18expressions of Christ when we give the
- 1:20wine of his blood forgiveness to one
- 1:22another. We walk in the light as he is
- 1:25in the light. We have coinia which is
- 1:28communion with one another and the
- 1:30[music] blood cleanses us from all sin.
- 1:32So in chapter 11
- 1:36Paul is going to
- 1:39present
- 1:41the order of the kingdom.
- 1:45Basically, this is the closing of the
- 1:48wound of division. This is when he says,
- 1:52"I've told you [music] you got problems.
- 1:53I've told you the what's wrong with your
- 1:55motivation, knowledge instead of love,
- 1:58liberty instead of others. I've told you
- 2:00that you're trying to split the
- 2:02apostles. I've told you you're trying to
- 2:04be independent from fatherhood. But now,
- 2:07I'm going to tell you what fixes all of
- 2:09this." That's what chapter 11 does. So
- 2:12he [music] says 1 Corinthians 11:1,
- 2:17"Be imitators of me just as I also am of
- 2:22[music] Christ."
- 2:24The cure to all of their divisiveness is
- 2:27stop being [music] original. Stop trying
- 2:30to be the genesis of what God is doing
- 2:33[music] and just accept your place to be
- 2:37followers because we're all in a
- 2:39following journey.
- 2:42We're walking in the footsteps of those
- 2:43who went before us. And if you're
- 2:45blazing your own path, you're separating
- 2:48from Jesus. So he says, "Be imitators of
- 2:51me just as I also am of Christ." Now I
- 2:56praise you because you remember me in
- 2:59everything
- 3:00and hold firmly
- 3:03to the traditions
- 3:06just as I
- 3:08delivered them to you.
- 3:11So there's divisions, but he's also
- 3:14saying at least some of them are holding
- 3:17firmly to what Paul gave. So in that
- 3:21statement, we see what it means to be
- 3:23imitators. Walk in the patterns that you
- 3:27were given and stop acting like you've
- 3:31got to reinvent the wheel in order to
- 3:33pioneer your own originality and
- 3:35legitimacy. You don't. And then he says
- 3:39verse three, but I want you to
- 3:42understand
- 3:44that Christ
- 3:46is the head of every man and the man is
- 3:50the head of a woman and God is the head
- 3:55of Christ.
- 3:58Now he's going to start ordering them in
- 4:01the basics of kingdom composition.
- 4:05And he starts with our relationship with
- 4:08God and he moves to our relationship
- 4:10between husband and wife and then to the
- 4:13church. Does this make sense? So this is
- 4:17him fixing the division.
- 4:20I want you to imitate me. And here's
- 4:22what Paul has given them. These are the
- 4:24traditions or the patterns that Paul has
- 4:27given them. He says, I want you to
- 4:28understand that Christ is the head of
- 4:32every man.
- 4:33What does that mean? Well,
- 4:37God has many aspects to his nature just
- 4:42like I have many aspects to my nature. I
- 4:46am a father to you kids, but I am a son
- 4:50to granddaddy and grandmama.
- 4:53And I am a preacher to the church and I
- 4:57am a businessman in the market. These
- 5:01are aspects to my nature. One person,
- 5:04one being, but different aspects.
- 5:08And
- 5:11the covering of your lives as children
- 5:15is my fatherhood aspect
- 5:19and the care to grandmama is my sunship
- 5:23aspect.
- 5:25So when we think of God, it's one being
- 5:28but the aspect of his sunship
- 5:32is what the man should be guided by. The
- 5:35man is guided by the aspect of God that
- 5:40is Christ in how he submitted in
- 5:44obedience to the father. How he did
- 5:47nothing of his own initiative.
- 5:49How he spoke as the father gave
- 5:51utterance. how he was in total obedience
- 5:55and learned obedience through the things
- 5:57that he suffered. Let this mind be in
- 5:59you that was in Christ Jesus. So Paul is
- 6:02saying for the men in families, I want
- 6:05you to be a leader guided by sunship
- 6:09submission.
- 6:11Okay, so that's the first thing I want
- 6:14to say. The other thing I want to draw
- 6:16out here is that this Christ headship is
- 6:21actually exercised through the church.
- 6:24There's a very important scripture that
- 6:26should be pencled into your margin as a
- 6:30parallel reference here and that is
- 6:32Ephesians 1:22:23.
- 6:36In Ephesians 1:22, Paul's tells us that
- 6:40God has placed everything
- 6:43under the feet of Christ and gave Christ
- 6:47to be head over all things. But the
- 6:51Amplified Bible says it like this. This
- 6:55is a headship
- 6:57exercised in and through the church.
- 7:03So if the head of every man is Christ,
- 7:07where does that headship come from? It
- 7:10comes from the spirit. But Paul tells us
- 7:12in Ephesians 1:22, it is a headship
- 7:16exercised through the church. So when
- 7:20Paul is making these commandments,
- 7:23he is bringing headship to the men.
- 7:27Okay?
- 7:28But the way a man submits is different
- 7:32than the way the woman submits. The man
- 7:35has no constitutional
- 7:39individual
- 7:41in his life saying it should be done
- 7:43like this. But the woman does. Both are
- 7:47in complete submission. But one is in
- 7:50submission to the spirit and the spirit
- 7:52through the community of the church. The
- 7:56woman is in submission to the individual
- 7:58of the man and in that way it is
- 8:01different. Let's read on. I want you to
- 8:05understand that Christ is the head of
- 8:09every man.
- 8:12But that speaks of the church also.
- 8:15And the man is the head of a woman.
- 8:20And God is the head of Christ.
- 8:26Does that mean Christ isn't God? No. But
- 8:29the aspect of Christ that he's referring
- 8:31to is the human aspect. He's referring
- 8:34to the sunship aspect. So when Jesus
- 8:38would say there is none good but God
- 8:40alone, is he denying his own divinity?
- 8:42No. But he's emphasizing his humanity in
- 8:47submission to the indwelling divinity.
- 8:51And that's what man needs to be guided
- 8:53by. He needs to be guided by the human
- 8:56sunship agency of God which starts with
- 9:01Christ and is expressed through the
- 9:03community.
- 9:05Every man who has something on his head
- 9:10while praying or prophesying
- 9:12disgraces his head.
- 9:15But every woman who has her head
- 9:18uncovered while praying or prophesying
- 9:22disgraces her head
- 9:25for she is one and the same as the woman
- 9:27whose head is shaved.
- 9:31So Paul is saying that a man it needs to
- 9:37submit. He needs to have headship in his
- 9:40life to the spirit and to the community
- 9:43general.
- 9:44But the woman needs to submit to the
- 9:47individual man.
- 9:50And God has given us symbols
- 9:53to point toward this spiritual
- 9:57submission.
- 9:59The reality is spiritual, but there's
- 10:02also a physical symbol.
- 10:06Okay? The symbol is a woman has long
- 10:10hair.
- 10:12That's signaling that as an individual,
- 10:15she needs to be individually covered by
- 10:19an a man.
- 10:21And the symbol for a man is that he has
- 10:24short hair and that he should not pray
- 10:26or prophesy in a manner that is covering
- 10:30his head. Now, this means that a man has
- 10:34to take ultimate responsibility for what
- 10:36he believes is God's will in his life.
- 10:39But a woman has that responsibility
- 10:43mediated through her husband. So she has
- 10:46an excuse before God that the man does
- 10:48not have. She can say, "I was trying to
- 10:51honor my husband." Now, she can't honor
- 10:54her husband to the point of disobeying
- 10:56God or conscience or harming others or
- 10:58herself. But she has to obey God through
- 11:02the agency of her husband in an ordinary
- 11:05course of life. The man cannot say, "I
- 11:08was just trying to do what I was told."
- 11:10He has to believe that whatever he was
- 11:13told in his own conviction, in his own
- 11:16conscience was the voice of the spirit
- 11:19through the church or [snorts] directly
- 11:21through the spirit. But he has to
- 11:22believe that he made the evaluation that
- 11:25this is my conviction. This is God.
- 11:28doesn't mean it originates with me, but
- 11:31it does mean I bear witness with my head
- 11:34uncovered that this is God's will. And
- 11:37if he pretends that he is obeying God by
- 11:42just following others, then he may as
- 11:44well wear a bun because he is covering
- 11:48his head when God wants him to stand
- 11:50with his head uncovered in absolute
- 11:53accountability for how he led his
- 11:55family.
- 11:57Does that mean that the writer of
- 11:59Hebrews is wrong when it says, "Obey
- 12:01those who have the rule over you?" No.
- 12:04Does it mean that John is wrong when he
- 12:07says, "You have no need for any man to
- 12:09teach you, for you have an anointing?"
- 12:11No. John is teaching them when he tells
- 12:13them that they don't need a man to teach
- 12:15them. But John is teaching through the
- 12:18anointing. The anointing is teaching
- 12:20through John. So the man has an
- 12:25obligation to maintain an atmosphere of
- 12:29honor and submission toward those over
- 12:32him in the Lord. But at the end of the
- 12:34day, he has to make the call. Is this
- 12:38what the spirit is telling me or not?
- 12:42He's got to make that ultimate call. The
- 12:44woman conversely does have an individual
- 12:47in that mediator capacity
- 12:50and she can't use that to sin or violate
- 12:53conscience. But it is a different
- 12:56orientation of relational behavior that
- 12:59Paul is giving. For if a woman does not
- 13:02cover her head, let her also have her
- 13:04hair cut off. But if it is disgraceful
- 13:08for a woman to have her hair cut off or
- 13:10her head shaved, let her cover her head.
- 13:15So the covering that a woman has in her
- 13:19life is the covering of a man. And that
- 13:23is symbolized
- 13:25by
- 13:26the symbol of uncut hair on her head. Do
- 13:31you understand? Now, it could almost
- 13:33sound like he's talking about a covering
- 13:36like a piece of cloth, but that's not
- 13:39what he's talking about. He's talking
- 13:40about a covering like a man who's
- 13:43covering her because he's already
- 13:45established that that's who the head is.
- 13:49For a man ought not to have his head
- 13:51covered since he is the image and glory
- 13:53of God, but the woman is the glory of
- 13:56man. This means the radiant reputation.
- 13:59So, man is the image and glory of God.
- 14:01woman is the is the glory of man.
- 14:05The man does not originate from woman
- 14:07but woman from man. So in this he's
- 14:10saying that authority has to do with
- 14:13authorship or at least origin and
- 14:15because woman comes from man. This
- 14:18orientation of submission predates the
- 14:21fall. He does not say the woman should
- 14:24submit because of the fall because of
- 14:28sin. He says that elsewhere, but here he
- 14:31anchors it prior to the fall. It's the
- 14:33way God intended that the relationship
- 14:35be even before the fall. Does that make
- 14:38sense? So, it is not taken away because
- 14:40someone receives the spirit or is saved.
- 14:44Therefore, the woman ought to have a
- 14:46symbol of authority on her head because
- 14:50of the angels.
- 14:53The angels are the guardians of God's
- 14:55order. They're the ones who make sure
- 14:57the the world functions as it should.
- 15:00And when the woman is outside of God's
- 15:03order, it invokes the wrath of those who
- 15:07are protectors of God's order. So in
- 15:10order to not come under angelic
- 15:12displeasure, a woman should symbolize
- 15:16her submission, her headship, and her
- 15:18covering. So the reality of a woman's
- 15:21covering is her husband and the symbol
- 15:24is her hair.
- 15:26But that the covering is not a piece of
- 15:28cloth. The covering is a man.
- 15:33However, in the Lord, neither is woman
- 15:35independent of man, nor is a man
- 15:38independent of woman. Now independent
- 15:42does not describe submission or lack of
- 15:45submission. It describes
- 15:48cooperation.
- 15:49So daddy is not whole without mommy.
- 15:53Daddy does not have a view of himself
- 15:56that does not need mommy. Right? So I am
- 16:01not independent from my spouse.
- 16:05But that doesn't describe how that
- 16:07interdependence should be ordered. The
- 16:10ind interdependence is real but it has
- 16:13an order. And the order is the head of
- 16:16every woman is man. and the head of man
- 16:19is Christ.
- 16:25For the woman originates from the man,
- 16:27so also the man has his birth through
- 16:29the woman. And all things originate from
- 16:32God. So he's saying we can't have the
- 16:35kingdom without each other. We need men
- 16:39need women in their lives as much as
- 16:41women need men. I would argue maybe
- 16:43more. But that doesn't describe the
- 16:46order of submission. That just describes
- 16:49the order of honor and interdependent
- 16:51love. That there is a way of loving each
- 16:54other and needing each other and
- 16:56honoring each other. That doesn't
- 16:58necessarily describe submitting to each
- 17:01other. Though we all submit
- 17:04if we submit to love. Judge for
- 17:07yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to
- 17:09pray to God with her head uncovered?
- 17:12So he's saying if it's not proper for
- 17:14her to have her head shaved, why
- 17:17wouldn't she have a husband? He's saying
- 17:19that the symbol of her hair is pointing
- 17:24toward the reality of her relational
- 17:26covering.
- 17:29Judge for yourselves. Is it proper for a
- 17:31woman to pray to God with her head
- 17:32uncovered? Does not even nature itself
- 17:35teach you that if a man has long hair,
- 17:37it is a dishonor to him? So I want you
- 17:39to pay attention to the juxiposition. He
- 17:42says, "Judge for yourselves. Is it
- 17:45proper for a woman to pray with her head
- 17:46uncovered?"
- 17:49No, it's not proper. So, what is
- 17:51covered? He says, "But a man, if he's
- 17:54got long hair,
- 17:56it's an abomination.
- 17:58So, what is covered in the in the
- 18:01symbolic sense? Covered is having long
- 18:03hair. Uncovered is having short hair."
- 18:09Does not even nature itself teach you
- 18:11that if a man has long hair, it is a
- 18:13dishonor to him. But if a woman has long
- 18:15hair, now we know what the symbol is, it
- 18:19is a glory for her. For her hair is
- 18:23given to her for a covering.
- 18:28So the real and relational covering is
- 18:31her husband, but the symbolic covering
- 18:33that God has given her is her hair. Now
- 18:38there are several words that Paul is
- 18:40using here for hair. And the translation
- 18:43just says hair hair. But the the
- 18:46different words are thric
- 18:48and comeo. And these are all very
- 18:51different things. When he says when when
- 18:55Paul talks about just hair like the
- 18:57stuff that's growing on my head, that's
- 18:59just thick hair. But
- 19:04it refers to a hairdo.
- 19:07It refers to neatly bound hair. It's
- 19:11more than just something growing on your
- 19:13scalp. It's uncut, neatly bound hair if
- 19:18you put it all together and ch try to
- 19:20harmonize it with the meaning. But if a
- 19:23woman has long hair, it is a glory to
- 19:26her for her hair is given to her for a
- 19:28covering. The main covering or the
- 19:31symbolic covering? Symbolic. The
- 19:33symbolic covering.
- 19:36The main covering he's talking about is
- 19:38her husband. So if you put a little
- 19:41doily on your head in place of your
- 19:42husband, that won't fly. The symbolic
- 19:46covering is long uncut haido. The main
- 19:49covering is relational submission to
- 19:52your husband.
- 19:54But if one is inclined to be
- 19:55contentious, we have no other practice,
- 19:57nor have the churches of God.
- 20:00So he's saying, you want to be difficult
- 20:02about this? You want to say that we
- 20:05shouldn't have long hair and that that's
- 20:06not the covering and we shouldn't have
- 20:09submission to our husbands. Paul's
- 20:11saying I want to be clear here. Every
- 20:14church of God is abiding by this
- 20:16practice. So this is a universal.
- 20:20He has just cured the first thing that
- 20:23brings division in the church disorder
- 20:26between husbands and wives. That's how
- 20:28the fall began.
- 20:31The devil's first utterance recorded in
- 20:35the earth was basically asking Eve, can
- 20:39you trust your husband to hear from God?
- 20:42Because he said, "Did God really say?"
- 20:48But when God said it, Eve wasn't even
- 20:50made.
- 20:52So, she could have only learned it
- 20:54through her husband. So he's basically
- 20:56saying, can you trust your husband to
- 20:59reflect honestly what God is saying for
- 21:01your family?
- 21:03If you get that cured, you have the
- 21:06first step toward a unified body of
- 21:10Christ.
- 21:12But if one is inclined to be
- 21:14contentious, we have no other practice,
- 21:16nor have the churches of God. But in
- 21:19giving this instruction, I do not praise
- 21:21you
- 21:24because you come together not for the
- 21:27better but for the worse.
- 21:31What he means is I'm not happy with you
- 21:34because when y'all are coming together,
- 21:36you're not walking away from this church
- 21:38service stronger and [clears throat]
- 21:40more unified. You're walking away worse.
- 21:44Your gatherings are tearing you down.
- 21:47And apparently they're tearing them down
- 21:50in the way that wives are not submitting
- 21:52to the covering of their husbands.
- 21:55They're not tearing them down in the way
- 21:56that wives aren't tying on doilies.
- 21:59They're tearing them down in the way
- 22:00that wives are not submitting to their
- 22:02place.
- 22:04For in the first place, when you come
- 22:06together as a church, I hear that
- 22:09divisions exist among you. And
- 22:12[clears throat] in part, I believe it.
- 22:15Do you think he's returned to his very
- 22:17first thesis? He's still trying to cure
- 22:20what's destroying the Corinthian church.
- 22:24I hear there are divisions among you.
- 22:26And in part, I believe it.
- 22:30For there must also be factions among
- 22:32you so that those who are approved may
- 22:34become evident among you.
- 22:37Paul says, "God's going to use your
- 22:40factions to show those who won't
- 22:42participate in them."
- 22:45It's okay. It's necessary that factions
- 22:48come in the church because God uses that
- 22:51to pull out of the church the unserious,
- 22:54the independent, the arrogant, those who
- 22:57think they have the gifts, those who
- 22:59think they're clever, those who have the
- 23:01worldly wisdom, those who have the
- 23:04knowledge without the love. Everything
- 23:06he's been addressing in this book, he
- 23:08says it's good that they're here because
- 23:10they take out of the church those who
- 23:12shouldn't be there.
- 23:14Therefore, when you meet together, it is
- 23:18not to eat the Lord's supper.
- 23:22For in your eating,
- 23:24each one takes his own supper first, and
- 23:28one is hungry and another is drunk.
- 23:32What?
- 23:34That's what Paul says. What?
- 23:38Do you not have houses in which to eat
- 23:40and drink?
- 23:44Or do you despise the church of God
- 23:48and shame those who have nothing?
- 23:53What shall I say to you? Shall I praise
- 23:55you? In this I will not praise you.
- 24:01So he is saying that when they come
- 24:03together for church services, their
- 24:06motivation is all wrong. They're acting
- 24:09like communion is just to get together
- 24:10and have a meal. And he's saying you've
- 24:13got houses for that. Communion is to
- 24:17reconsecrate yourself to the order of
- 24:19God. Communion is to recommmit yourself
- 24:23to the oneness, the unity, the love, and
- 24:27especially the spirit of God through
- 24:30remembering what Jesus has done and what
- 24:33he is asking of you. Communion is for
- 24:35you to break yourselves off as part of
- 24:38that loaf and share your lives with each
- 24:40other.
- 24:42And he says, "This is disgusting." What?
- 24:44He says, "What?
- 24:47Don't be this way." And his his
- 24:50indictment is that they are despising
- 24:53the church of God.
- 24:56For I receive from the Lord that which I
- 24:59delivered to you.
- 25:02Now, this is an important teaching on
- 25:03communion, but the bigger context is
- 25:06he's telling them, "You're not imitating
- 25:08me anymore.
- 25:10You've abandoned the pattern I gave you.
- 25:12And he's saying, I didn't get this
- 25:14myself. I got it from the Lord and I
- 25:16gave it to you. And the disorder in your
- 25:19life is because you're reinventing the
- 25:22wheel.
- 25:23And it may take a time. It may be a
- 25:25while, but you're just going to keep
- 25:27reinventing in order to show your
- 25:29originality. And before you know it,
- 25:31you're going to have a terrible mess.
- 25:34[clears throat]
- 25:35The Corinthian church is not an example
- 25:37to us. They did not survive. They fell.
- 25:42For I received from the Lord that which
- 25:45I delivered to you.
- 25:48That's the main point that we want to
- 25:50get here.
- 25:52God didn't give them that pattern. God
- 25:55gave it to Paul and told them to be
- 25:57imitators, but they wanted to be
- 25:59originators.
- 26:01And that's what started destroying the
- 26:03church. And yes, in its particularity,
- 26:07it's about communion, but in its big
- 26:09theme, it's about independence.
- 26:14For I received from the Lord that which
- 26:17I also delivered to you, that the Lord
- 26:20Jesus in the night in which he was
- 26:22betrayed took bread, not spaghetti, not
- 26:26beef roast,
- 26:29bread.
- 26:30And when he had given thanks, he broke
- 26:33it and said, "This is my body which is
- 26:38for you.
- 26:40Do this in remembrance of me.
- 26:44In the same way,
- 26:47he took the cup also after supper,
- 26:51saying, "This cup is the new covenant in
- 26:56my blood.
- 26:58Do this as often as you drink it in
- 27:02remembrance of me."
- 27:04Let me paraphrase. Paul is saying, "I
- 27:08hate your communions.
- 27:10you are coming together and you're doing
- 27:13something that you call communion, but
- 27:15he says it's not the Lord's supper. It's
- 27:17your supper
- 27:19and you're doing it because you're
- 27:21hungry and someone else is drinking too
- 27:23much. But he's saying you have houses to
- 27:26take care of hunger in.
- 27:29Communion is not an ordinary meal.
- 27:33Communion is a reignment with a certain
- 27:37attitude toward Jesus, his sacrifice,
- 27:40and one another. And he says, "What I
- 27:43gave you that you have improved upon, I
- 27:46got it from the Lord, but you're not
- 27:49imitating me anymore. You're not keeping
- 27:51the traditions, and I'm not happy. For
- 27:54as often as you eat this bread and drink
- 27:56the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death
- 28:02until he comes.
- 28:05So he's saying true communion is not
- 28:09just a memory
- 28:11for the Jews when they remembered the
- 28:13Sabbath day. That didn't mean they sat
- 28:16around, oh yeah, yeah, honey, they did
- 28:19have a Sabbath 2,000 years ago. To
- 28:23remember the Sabbath was to enact the
- 28:26Sabbath. And he has said in chapter 10
- 28:29that those who
- 28:32serve at the altar partake of the altar.
- 28:36So he is telling us that we are we are
- 28:39supposed to remember what Jesus did and
- 28:42enact what Jesus did. We are supposed to
- 28:45remember what he did in order to enact
- 28:49that culture of giving our lives to one
- 28:52another, of giving forgiveness to one
- 28:54another, of coming back into alignment
- 28:57with Christ and one another. So we are
- 29:01proclaiming his death. We are saying the
- 29:05cross is our ethos.
- 29:08Forgiveness is our ethos. Humility is
- 29:11our ethos. Giving is our ethos. Breaking
- 29:14and sharing our lives is how we are
- 29:17living. We are not simply remembering
- 29:20that Jesus did it all so we can keep
- 29:22being self-serving babies in this world
- 29:25today. We are
- 29:28coming under the weight that he has told
- 29:31us to take up our cross and follow him
- 29:34and keep proclaiming what he did in such
- 29:37a way as to enact it. Remember the
- 29:40Sabbath day. Remember what he did. Enact
- 29:44the Sabbath. Enact the cross. Enact the
- 29:47ethos of sacrifice.
- 29:50Therefore, whoever eats the bread or
- 29:54drinks the cup of the Lord in an
- 29:58unworthy manner shall be guilty of the
- 30:01body and the blood of the Lord.
- 30:06Now, the body is symbolized in the
- 30:08bread.
- 30:09But he's just told us in the previous
- 30:11chapter, we are that bread.
- 30:16So he's saying that the way they're
- 30:19treating each other, the dishonor, the
- 30:22disorder is making them guilty of what
- 30:26the Lord paid for on the cross. They're
- 30:30guilty of doing again to the body what
- 30:33was done to Jesus's body, of harming it,
- 30:36of destroying it. But the body he's
- 30:38talking about is not just Jesus in his
- 30:42individual sacrifice. It's what we're
- 30:44doing to Jesus in his community.
- 30:48Guilty of the body and the blood of the
- 30:50Lord. But a man must
- 30:54examine himself
- 30:57and in doing so he is to eat of the
- 31:00bread and drink of the cup.
- 31:03So, we are supposed to search oursel
- 31:07because it's very heavy.
- 31:09We do this wrong and we're guilty of the
- 31:12body and blood of the Lord. We may as
- 31:14well be the centurion stabbing his side.
- 31:18If we're not doing this with the right
- 31:20attitude,
- 31:21we are destroying the temple of God and
- 31:23God will destroy him. So, get out the
- 31:27divisions. I hear that there are
- 31:28divisions. That's what he's trying to
- 31:29fix. So that's what's the wrong thing.
- 31:33Taking communion casually,
- 31:35that's the evil thing. You can't be any
- 31:38more serious than telling someone that
- 31:40if they don't examine themsel, they're
- 31:42guilty of the body and blood of the
- 31:43Lord. So anybody who wants to make
- 31:46communion a lighter thing, they are
- 31:49propagating a doctrine of demons counter
- 31:52to what Paul is commanding.
- 31:54Let a man examine himself. Search me, oh
- 31:58God, and know my thoughts.
- 32:01Is there jealousy? Is there envy? Is
- 32:04there strife? Is there independence? Is
- 32:07there arrogance from my knowledge?
- 32:09Everybody's got knowledge. Have we lost
- 32:12love? Have we lost order? Have we lost
- 32:16submission, headship,
- 32:18or are we still part of that one loaf?
- 32:22Are we the one wheat berry that makes
- 32:25the tooth crack when you bite down on it
- 32:28because we haven't been ground with the
- 32:29whole lump as Michael Satler taught? Are
- 32:33we the one grape in the wine that hasn't
- 32:35been crushed so as to yield up all of
- 32:38its energy and nutrients? Are we the
- 32:41independent one? Are we distinguishing
- 32:44ourselves?
- 32:46The larger theme of this chapter is that
- 32:49divisions make communion a fraud.
- 32:53Divisions based on pride, divisions
- 32:56based on gift superiority, based on
- 32:59puffing up knowledge,
- 33:01divisions based on independence,
- 33:03divisions that subvert fatherhood,
- 33:06divisions that reinvent the wheel
- 33:08instead of staying in the tradition.
- 33:12So he says that if you drink it or eat
- 33:15it in an unworthy manner, you're guilty.
- 33:18So what you're examining is, am I
- 33:20worthy?
- 33:22And what makes you worthy?
- 33:25Not your own righteousness, but the
- 33:28absolute humility
- 33:31and sense of unworthiness
- 33:34to be partakers of Christ. So the
- 33:37absolute death through all the strife,
- 33:40all the biting, all the disorder,
- 33:44that's what makes you worthy. When that
- 33:45is in the grave, you're ready.
- 33:49For he who eats and drinks
- 33:53eats and drinks judgment to himself if
- 33:58he does not judge the body rightly.
- 34:03Notice he doesn't say if he does not
- 34:05judge the wine and the bread rightly. He
- 34:07says judge the body. He says if you're
- 34:10not examining yourself and you're taking
- 34:12communion, you're guilty of the body and
- 34:14blood.
- 34:16And he says if you eat and drink, you
- 34:19drink judgment to yourself. If you do
- 34:22not judge the body rightly, the body is
- 34:25the community, the church.
- 34:28If you haven't submitted to your place,
- 34:30if you haven't gotten rid of all the
- 34:32dynamics that are destroying the
- 34:34Corinthian church, then you're calling a
- 34:37judgment down upon yourself. You're
- 34:39drinking and eating judgment. You're
- 34:40saying, "Let me be cursed
- 34:43because you're acknowledging that what
- 34:45Jesus suffered on the cross is the
- 34:48penalty of for your sin, but you're
- 34:51still cultivating that sin inside of
- 34:53you. So the judgment he suffered now
- 34:55goes into you. But it should go out of
- 34:58you as you lay it aside. As you say
- 35:00again, no judgments, no jealousy, no
- 35:04pride, no independence, no superiority
- 35:07complexes
- 35:09all away.
- 35:12Then we place it under him. For this
- 35:14reason, many among you are weak and
- 35:16sick, and a number sleep, literally die.
- 35:21But if we judged ourselves rightly, we
- 35:24would not be judged.
- 35:27So communion should follow a season of
- 35:31judging yourself,
- 35:35condemning things about you that need a
- 35:37change and getting them out of you.
- 35:39Communion should follow a season of
- 35:42examination and judgment.
- 35:45God, I shouldn't be thinking this way.
- 35:48God, I shouldn't be speaking this way.
- 35:50God, I should be submitting this way.
- 35:53Forgive me for not confessing it and
- 35:56getting it out of you. So that when you
- 35:59invite the curse that Jesus bore for you
- 36:02on the tree,
- 36:05you invite it on what you have renounced
- 36:08and not on the you that you're still
- 36:10living in.
- 36:13But if we judged ourselves rightly, we
- 36:15would not be judged.
- 36:17But when we are judged,
- 36:19we are disciplined by the Lord so that
- 36:22we will not be condemned along with the
- 36:24world.
- 36:26So he's saying God is bringing
- 36:27discipline, hardship in your life
- 36:29because you're not dealing with your
- 36:31sin.
- 36:33Tragedies can come sometimes when you
- 36:36won't deal with the judgments inside of
- 36:38you. Judgment starts coming to to you.
- 36:42But he says God is disciplining you so
- 36:44that you will not be permanently
- 36:46rejected and damned with the world.
- 36:48That's what condemned means with
- 36:51damnation.
- 36:53So he's saying even the discipline, even
- 36:55the sickness, even the calamities that
- 36:57are coming, God's using that to turn you
- 36:59back. Turn you back to fatherhood. Turn
- 37:02you back to love. Turn you back to the
- 37:06design and order.
- 37:08So then, my brethren, when you come
- 37:11together to eat, wait for one another.
- 37:17What does that mean? If anyone is
- 37:19hungry, let him eat at home so that you
- 37:22will not come together for judgment.
- 37:26The remaining matter I will arrange
- 37:28[music] when I come.
- 37:31So there was probably a practical
- 37:33manifestation of this.
- 37:36There were probably people who were
- 37:38eating too much, people who weren't
- 37:40eating enough.
- 37:42But the reason we don't have much
- 37:43details on the practical aspect is
- 37:46because that wasn't the problem.
- 37:49That was merely the lens that
- 37:51highlighted the attitudinal problem
- 37:54that needed to be addressed. And to act
- 37:58like Jesus is going to judge or kill
- 38:01somebody because they um didn't take the
- 38:04bread in the right order is
- 38:08That's delusional.
- 38:10The judgment that he's talking about is
- 38:12attitudes toward one another, judgments
- 38:15toward one another, disorder toward one
- 38:18another, [music] disobedience to Paul
- 38:21and what he received from the Lord,
- 38:23pretending we can reinvent the wheel.
- 38:25That's the big picture.
- 38:27And the manifestation of it was that
- 38:29they just were having really nasty
- 38:31services.
- 38:33So then, brethren, when you [music] come
- 38:34together, wait for one another. He wants
- 38:38them to do it together because communion
- 38:41should be the ceremony of the reality we
- 38:44are living day by day. It should not
- 38:47replace that [music] reality. It should
- 38:49express that reality. And it should be
- 38:51the intentional realignment that we are
- 38:54all consciously [music] getting out of
- 38:57us everything that can be judged and
- 39:00inviting ourselves into the self-giving
- 39:03loving
- 39:05ethos and way of the cross.
- 39:08[music]
