- 0:00So, this is 1 Corinthians [music]
- 0:01chapter 10 and this begins a whole new
- 0:05thought section for Paul, but it's all
- 0:08still integrated. [music]
- 0:10Remember that his burden for the
- 0:12Corinthian church is that they are
- 0:15[music] divided.
- 0:17And that is his burden and that remains
- 0:19his burden through the entire thing.
- 0:21And he feels that that disunity makes
- 0:25them
- 0:25>> [music]
- 0:25>> incomplete
- 0:27and ultimately threatens to destroy the
- 0:30temple, the church of God. And he warns
- 0:32that whoever destroys the temple of God,
- 0:35God will destroy that person.
- 0:37And so, [music] out of those sections,
- 0:40he began to minister to us about love.
- 0:43He showed us how it was jealousy [music]
- 0:46and strife that was causing divisions.
- 0:48And then then he showed us it was
- 0:50liberty
- 0:51>> [music]
- 0:51>> that was causing divisions. Liberty not
- 0:54anchored in love. People were saying, "I
- 0:58have knowledge and I know an idol is
- 1:00nothing." And Paul says, "That's true. I
- 1:03accept that. But if you don't do it in
- 1:06love, you're going to hurt somebody."
- 1:08So, that's the next way of a division.
- 1:11>> [music]
- 1:11>> And then in the previous chapter 9, he
- 1:14kind of returned to what he began with,
- 1:16the Paul, Apollos, the comparison among
- 1:19apostles, right?
- 1:22Now in in the end of chapter 9, he's
- 1:24telling us to run in such a way as to be
- 1:28effective, as to win [music] those that
- 1:31God has called us to win, is to live for
- 1:34love, ultimately. And now
- 1:38in chapter 10
- 1:39>> [music]
- 1:39>> and chapter 11, these are big critical
- 1:42passages, he's going to dial in on some
- 1:46of the
- 1:47specific contexts where the disunity was
- 1:50emerging such as around communion.
- 1:53And what we're going to see is he's
- 1:54going to warn, he's going to show how
- 1:56the
- 1:58ran in such a way as to lose the prize,
- 2:01as to be disqualified.
- 2:04Amen. So, that's what chapter 10 and
- 2:06chapter 11 are going to focus on.
- 2:10Chapter 9 says the last verse of chapter
- 2:129 says, "But I discipline my body and
- 2:15make it my slave so that after I have
- 2:18preached to others, I myself will not be
- 2:21disqualified, excluded, rejected, lost
- 2:26from the race."
- 2:291 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 1, "For
- 2:33I do not want you to be unaware,
- 2:35brethren, that our fathers were all
- 2:37under the cloud
- 2:39and all passed through the sea."
- 2:41So, everything he's about to say is
- 2:43connecting to the themes of love. And
- 2:46he's saying,
- 2:47"You're going to tell me that you're
- 2:49under the cloud, Corinthians. You're
- 2:51going to tell me that you feel the
- 2:53spirit in your meetings."
- 2:56I bet you do. You're going to tell me
- 2:58that you passed through the sea of water
- 3:00baptism.
- 3:01>> [applause]
- 3:02>> I bet you do. But he says, "I don't want
- 3:04you to be unaware of other people who
- 3:06had exactly what you're boasting in, and
- 3:08they still lost their way."
- 3:12"For I do not want you to be unaware,
- 3:14brethren, that our fathers were all
- 3:17under the cloud and all passed through
- 3:20the sea." Now, for Paul, he's saying
- 3:23they were baptized in water and spirit.
- 3:25That's what that means.
- 3:27"And all were baptized into Moses in the
- 3:31cloud and in the sea."
- 3:34"And all ate the same spiritual food,
- 3:38and all drank the same spiritual drink,
- 3:41for they were drinking from a spiritual
- 3:43rock which followed them, and the rock
- 3:46was Christ. Nevertheless,
- 3:50with most of them, God was not well
- 3:55pleased.
- 3:56For they were laid low
- 3:59in the wilderness.
- 4:02Paul is saying,
- 4:03"You guys are complacent,
- 4:06and you think you have
- 4:09what should make you be okay,
- 4:12but I want you to know
- 4:13that you have the parallel
- 4:17that the children of Israel had,
- 4:19and they were not pleasing to God." He's
- 4:23basically saying, "Stop telling me how
- 4:25good it's going,
- 4:26because if there is division and strife
- 4:29toward the apostles,
- 4:31among each other,
- 4:33if there's any of these dynamics, you're
- 4:36not where God wants you to be. Stop
- 4:38taking pride that you're under the
- 4:40cloud. Stop taking pride that you're
- 4:42eating spiritual food.
- 4:45That's not going to see you through.
- 4:47You need to get rid of these divisions
- 4:49that can destroy your temple.
- 4:52God was not well pleased.
- 4:55They were laid low in the wilderness.
- 4:59Blessings, yes. Provision, yes.
- 5:01Miracles, yes. A wilderness was coming
- 5:04that was going to reveal what was
- 5:05missing, and what was missing was a
- 5:08solidarity in faith with one another.
- 5:11That's what we're going to see here.
- 5:14Now, these things happened as examples
- 5:17for us
- 5:18so that we would not crave evil things
- 5:21as they also craved.
- 5:24Now, what were the evil things that the
- 5:26Israelites craved?
- 5:29They craved meat.
- 5:32Is that intrinsically evil? No.
- 5:35They craved leeks and garlic.
- 5:39Are those wicked and existentially evil?
- 5:42No.
- 5:44But they grumbled against Moses because
- 5:47their appetites wanted something else.
- 5:52And when they put their priority of
- 5:54desire above the leading and purpose of
- 5:57God, desires that would have been fine
- 5:59in one context became idols in this
- 6:02context.
- 6:04Do not be idolaters as some of them
- 6:07were, as it is written, the people sat
- 6:10down to eat and drink and stood up to
- 6:13play.
- 6:16Eating and drinking and play can become
- 6:19idolatry.
- 6:22Let's just have a good time.
- 6:25Loosen up.
- 6:26Let's have a different way of eating and
- 6:29drinking and let's get up and have fun.
- 6:33Nor let us act immorally as some of them
- 6:36did, and 23,000
- 6:38fell in one day.
- 6:42Nor let us try the Lord as some of them
- 6:44did and were destroyed by the serpents
- 6:47through grumbling at authority.
- 6:51Nor grumble as some of them did and were
- 6:53destroyed by the destroyer.
- 6:57Now, these things happened to them as an
- 7:00example, and they were written for our
- 7:02instruction upon whom the end of the
- 7:04ages have come. Paul is saying, "All
- 7:07these things are going to happen to you.
- 7:09You who have excellent speech, you who
- 7:13are clever, you who have who have
- 7:15knowledge, you who have the gifts,
- 7:19right? You who are under the cloud, who
- 7:21are baptized in the sea, you who have
- 7:24spiritual food, you're still on the
- 7:26wrong track.
- 7:30Therefore, let him who thinks he stands
- 7:34take heed that he does not fall."
- 7:38So, his whole point is you're absolutely
- 7:41sure that you're going to stand. That
- 7:44confidence is the harbinger of the fall
- 7:47that is coming.
- 7:50Who does this warning apply to? Anybody
- 7:52who thinks it doesn't apply to them.
- 7:55That's who it applies to. Anyone who is
- 7:57sure they stand, that is the person
- 8:00who needs to be careful lest they fall.
- 8:04No temptation has overtaken you
- 8:07but such as is common to man.
- 8:11And God, [clears throat] who is
- 8:12faithful, who will not allow you to be
- 8:14tempted beyond what you are able,
- 8:17but with the temptation will provide the
- 8:19way of escape also, so that you will be
- 8:22able to endure it.
- 8:25So, here he says, I want you to
- 8:27understand something. You're not an
- 8:29exception.
- 8:31What you're going through, everybody's
- 8:32going through.
- 8:34And it's what caused the first
- 8:37generation of the Exodus people from
- 8:39Egypt to fail.
- 8:42They were disqualified from the race.
- 8:45They
- 8:46died in the wilderness. And he's saying,
- 8:50you you you can't be complacent, but
- 8:53don't either imagine that God doesn't
- 8:55have grace for you. If you're being
- 8:57tempted, God has a way of escape.
- 8:59You're not going through anything that
- 9:00anybody else isn't going through.
- 9:02Therefore, my beloved, flee from
- 9:06idolatry.
- 9:07So, he says, God provides a way of
- 9:08escape. Therefore, flee.
- 9:12The escape is run away.
- 9:15Run away
- 9:18from idolatry. And in his equation,
- 9:21idolatry is anything that we put above
- 9:24the purpose of God, above the unity of
- 9:27the church, and above our love for one
- 9:29another.
- 9:30That becomes an idol.
- 9:32I speak as to wise men. Judge what I
- 9:35say.
- 9:37Is the cup of blessing which we bless a
- 9:40sharing in the blood of Christ?
- 9:42So now he's talking about communion. He
- 9:43says, "I'm going to talk to the people
- 9:45who who have sense.
- 9:48And they're going to be the only people
- 9:49who even follow what I'm saying.
- 9:52I speak to wise men, judge what I say.
- 9:54Let's let's have a little talk here.
- 9:56The cup of communion
- 9:58that we bless when we hold our hands and
- 10:00say, "Bless this wine as we remember the
- 10:03blood and sacrifice of Christ." He says,
- 10:05"The cup of blessing that we bless
- 10:09is it not a sharing in the blood of
- 10:11Christ?" It's a question.
- 10:13Is it?
- 10:16Is not the bread which we break a
- 10:18sharing in the body of Christ?
- 10:23Since there is one bread,
- 10:26we who are many
- 10:28are one body for we all partake of the
- 10:34one bread.
- 10:36So what Paul is saying
- 10:38is that
- 10:40the loaf
- 10:42of manna provision
- 10:46is the body of Christ.
- 10:49That loaf is symbolized in the communion
- 10:51supper.
- 10:53But the symbol is we're supposed to be
- 10:56breaking our lives and becoming all
- 10:58things to all men.
- 11:00We're supposed to be putting love first.
- 11:03We're supposed to be laying down our
- 11:04lives for one another.
- 11:06And he says,
- 11:07"What what are you doing here?
- 11:09What is communion to you
- 11:12if it's not the sharing in the blood of
- 11:14Christ, if it's not the partaking of the
- 11:17body of Christ? Unless you eat my flesh
- 11:20and drink my blood," Jesus had said.
- 11:23"You have no fellowship with me. You
- 11:25have no life in you." But the Apostle
- 11:28John would say, "If we walk in the light
- 11:30as he is in the light, we have
- 11:31fellowship with one another. And the
- 11:33word fellowship is the word koinonia,
- 11:36and that's the word translated from the
- 11:37Greek as communion.
- 11:40We have communion. There's something
- 11:42we're supposed to be taking from each
- 11:44other. Every time I receive a gift from
- 11:47you, that's a piece of Christ bread body
- 11:50broken for me
- 11:52and giving me nourishment.
- 11:54Every time I receive a forgiveness from
- 11:56you, that's the blood of Christ
- 11:57cleansing us from all sin as we bind on
- 12:00earth what he has bound in heaven.
- 12:04Since there is one bread, we who are
- 12:07many are one body.
- 12:10For we all partake of the one bread.
- 12:14Look at the nation of Israel.
- 12:16Are not those who eat the sacrifices
- 12:19sharers in the altar?
- 12:23He's saying the church is supposed to be
- 12:25the spiritual nation today.
- 12:27And you can't separate the sacrifice
- 12:30that Jesus made at Calvary of the altar
- 12:34from those who are giving it to one
- 12:36another. We are all sharing the same
- 12:38thing. We're part of what he did.
- 12:40No, our efforts don't atone for us,
- 12:44but we're supposed to pick up our cross
- 12:45and follow him
- 12:47and extend him and participate with him
- 12:50in his love for one another.
- 12:53What do I mean then?
- 12:55That a thing sacrificed to an idol is
- 12:58anything?
- 12:59Or that an idol is anything? You're
- 13:00like, what? What What are we talking
- 13:02about? Paul's all the way back in 1
- 13:03Corinthians 8. He's two chapters ago. He
- 13:06hasn't lost his train of thought.
- 13:08He's still picking on them for why they
- 13:11are using their knowledge and their
- 13:13liberty separated from love.
- 13:17So he's he's still talking about those
- 13:19burgers that they were eating from the
- 13:21the Hindu temple in my my allegory.
- 13:25No, but I say that the things which the
- 13:28Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to
- 13:30demons and not to God.
- 13:33And I do not want you to become sharers
- 13:35in demons.
- 13:39Sharers in demons. If you eat things
- 13:44that are sacrificed to demons,
- 13:46you're partaking of the demon.
- 13:49But if you eat what is consecrated to
- 13:51Jesus, you're partaking of Christ.
- 13:54You're eating his flesh and drinking his
- 13:56blood.
- 13:57You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and
- 14:00the cup of demons.
- 14:02You cannot partake of the table of the
- 14:04Lord and the table of demons.
- 14:07You can't have them at both at the same
- 14:10time.
- 14:11You're going to have to pick
- 14:12the idolatry that caused the children of
- 14:15Israel to die or the self-giving love
- 14:18that we saw at Calvary. You got to pick
- 14:21the table of the Lord or the table of
- 14:23demons.
- 14:25All things are lawful, but not all
- 14:27things are profitable. All things are
- 14:29lawful, but not all things edify or
- 14:32build up.
- 14:35Let no one seek his own good, but that
- 14:38of his neighbor.
- 14:40The whole theme here
- 14:42is
- 14:44they're going to come short
- 14:46through the idolatry of self, through
- 14:49the idolatry of liberty, through the
- 14:52idolatry of knowledge that puffs up.
- 14:55That does not seek the good of its
- 14:56neighbor. And in this, they're drinking
- 14:59of the cup of demons, of idolatry. Eat
- 15:02anything that is sold in the meat market
- 15:04without asking questions for conscience'
- 15:06sake.
- 15:08For the earth is the Lord's and all it
- 15:11contains.
- 15:12God does not give a hoot what you eat
- 15:16in terms of making you righteous before
- 15:18him or not. That is not what he cares
- 15:20about.
- 15:21If one of the unbelievers invites you
- 15:24and you want to go, eat anything that is
- 15:26set before you without asking questions
- 15:28for conscience sake.
- 15:31But,
- 15:33if anyone says to you,
- 15:35"This meat is sacrificed to idols.
- 15:40Do not eat it
- 15:42for the sake of the one who informed
- 15:45[music] you
- 15:48and for conscience sake.
- 15:50I mean, not your own conscience,
- 15:53but the other man's.
- 15:55For why is my freedom judged by
- 15:58another's conscience?
- 16:00If I partake with thankfulness, why am I
- 16:03slandered concerning that for which I
- 16:06give thanks?
- 16:08Whether then you eat or drink [music] or
- 16:11whatever you do, do to the glory of God.
- 16:16So, he's saying,
- 16:18"I can eat food sacrificed to idol, and
- 16:20it does not hurt my conscience. I could
- 16:23care less
- 16:24because an idol is nothing. I have
- 16:26knowledge.
- 16:28But if I live by the dictates of my
- 16:30knowledge and my liberty and not by the
- 16:32dictates of love,
- 16:34then I'm living for the idol of self.
- 16:37I'm using my liberty to destroy the
- 16:39temple,
- 16:41the people, the fellowship. I'm not
- 16:44winning.
- 16:45I'm using my I'm abusing my liberty.
- 16:48Give no offense either to Jews or to
- 16:50Greeks [music] or to the church of God.
- 16:53Give no offense.
- 16:55Try not to offend people.
- 16:58Just as I also please all men in all
- 17:00[music] things, not seeking my own
- 17:02profit, but the profit of the many, so
- 17:05that they may be saved.
- 17:09He's never lost his train of thought.
- 17:12Are you living for love? Then you're
- 17:15drinking the cup of the Lord's
- 17:18sacrifice.
- 17:19Are you living for self? Then you're
- 17:22using [music] even the liberty and
- 17:23knowledge God gave you
- 17:26for the idol of self. And you're saying,
- 17:28"I have a right to eat leeks and
- 17:30garlic." Mhm. But don't you dare put it
- 17:32above God's [music] purpose. "I have a
- 17:34right to like quail." Mhm.
- 17:37But are you going to go back to Egypt in
- 17:39order to get it?
- 17:40That's the idolatry he's talking about.
- 17:42It's simply the idolatry
- 17:45of self
- 17:46that can only be displaced
- 17:49by the priority of love, of laying our
- 17:51lives down in love
- 17:53>> [music]
- 17:53>> for others.
