- 0:00For anyone who's heard of astrology, but
- 0:02doesn't really know what it is,
- 0:04what is astrology and how does it work?
- 0:07>> So, astrology is the study of how the
- 0:11sky mirrors what happens on Earth.
- 0:15Astrology and your astrology chart is a
- 0:18mirror of your life, of your life's
- 0:21purpose, of your soul. It's a mirror of
- 0:24the events that also happen on the
- 0:26Earth. And when you're born, somebody's
- 0:30astrology chart is literally like a map
- 0:33of their life. It's a map of your
- 0:34potential, it's a map of your problems,
- 0:37it's a map of your growth edges. It's a
- 0:39map of all the ways in which you need to
- 0:42grow and work and change into yourself.
- 0:47And what it also signifies is that
- 0:50there's this kind of sense of you're an
- 0:53amulet [clears throat] of the exact time
- 0:56that you were born. So, every single
- 0:57moment of life has its own chart. So, us
- 1:02meeting today has a chart for it.
- 1:04And it is a crystallization,
- 1:07or the chart becomes a map of what we're
- 1:10crystallizing together. So, you as a
- 1:12person, when you're born, we look at we
- 1:15take a snapshot of the entire sky when
- 1:17you're born in the exact location in the
- 1:19exact time that you were born. And we
- 1:22see where everything was in the sky, and
- 1:25that is the amulet of you. If you so
- 1:29choose to work with it and look at it.
- 1:31>> So, you're looking at everything from
- 1:32the stars, the moon, the position of
- 1:35where you were born, the time of birth.
- 1:37>> Yeah, we're looking at everything. So,
- 1:39literally right now, if we were to take
- 1:41a snapshot of the sky, because we are in
- 1:42this place and because it's this time,
- 1:45there's a specific sign rising up over
- 1:47the horizon. The sun is in a specific
- 1:49place in the sky, and everything else
- 1:52out there in relationship to the Earth
- 1:54is in a specific place and it's having a
- 1:57certain relationship.
- 1:59>> [snorts]
- 1:59>> And so, astrology is the study of those
- 2:02relationships.
- 2:03>> For anyone who's
- 2:04listening and they're skeptical about
- 2:06astrology, they have their doubts,
- 2:07they're cynical about it,
- 2:10what would you say to them?
- 2:11>> Great. I love it. Like, you should be
- 2:13cynical. And also, God forbid we all
- 2:16like the same thing. It's like, I don't
- 2:18think that I don't really even want to
- 2:20live in a world where we all like
- 2:22believe in astrology, whatever that
- 2:23might mean. I think diversity is really
- 2:26important. I think that the main my main
- 2:30agenda is that you understand what your
- 2:33life's purpose is, and you move towards
- 2:36that with the greatest efficacy
- 2:38possible, and that moves you towards
- 2:41serving the world in your own specific
- 2:43way.
- 2:44I think that for me, astrology is my
- 2:47quickest entry point into that, but
- 2:49there are a thousand, and they're all
- 2:51legitimate and wonderful. I just want
- 2:53you to find yours. And so, if you don't
- 2:56like astrology, great.
- 2:58I don't know of anybody, and I you know,
- 3:01I'm sure there is people out there. I
- 3:02don't know of anybody that has spent
- 3:05a significant amount of time studying
- 3:08astrology, like really thoroughly
- 3:10studying it, and then feeling like it
- 3:12had no merit whatsoever.
- 3:14Jung, the the psychotherapist,
- 3:17psychologist, uh
- 3:20famously thought it was ridiculous, and
- 3:23studied it, and converted himself, and
- 3:25then he actually became somebody who
- 3:27impacted the field greatly.
- 3:30But,
- 3:31I feel like most people that don't like
- 3:33it are thinking about sun sign
- 3:35horoscopes, which are like a gateway
- 3:38drug into astrology. Like, they're not
- 3:40the thing.
- 3:41>> Talk to me about the difference between
- 3:42what you're talking about
- 3:44>> Yeah.
- 3:44>> sun sign horoscopes.
- 3:46>> So, sun sign horoscopes were developed
- 3:49around the time of the printing press,
- 3:51so that people could have an easy access
- 3:56point, an easy entry point into
- 3:58understanding their astrology. Cuz
- 3:59basically, if you knew the day that you
- 4:01were born,
- 4:03give or take, you knew what sun sign you
- 4:05were.
- 4:06But, before that, it was very, very
- 4:08focused on the rising sign. And the
- 4:10rising sign is so specific because
- 4:12again, it's about where you're born and
- 4:13the exact time cuz that's the exact
- 4:16piece of sky that's rising up over the
- 4:18eastern horizon.
- 4:19And that's your marker of life. Like
- 4:22that's your yes, I'm here. I'm saying
- 4:25yes to this life. I am, you know,
- 4:27separate from the body that brought me
- 4:28here, all of that.
- 4:30>> [snorts]
- 4:30>> So, your sun sign is like something you
- 4:32share with people that are born within a
- 4:3430-day span as you. It's very general.
- 4:37There's a lot to be gleaned from it, but
- 4:39it's not your chart. Only your rising
- 4:42sign can tell us your entry point and
- 4:45then it sets up the entire chart. It
- 4:47sets up the meaning of everything else
- 4:50for you. So, it's like looking at a
- 4:53sliver of a picture or like even a
- 4:57a pixel instead of looking at the whole
- 4:59thing.
- 5:00>> Mhm.
- 5:00>> So, yeah, if you are like, I don't want
- 5:03to be boiled down to a couple of tropes
- 5:06about my sun sign, I agree with you. I
- 5:08don't either. That's why I don't even
- 5:10like talking about my chart in public
- 5:11because I don't like having people think
- 5:15that they understand who I am by
- 5:18something so surface level.
- 5:20And your chart is so much more complex
- 5:23than that. I mean, there's like
- 5:25there's like fractals of fractals that
- 5:27you can get into of meaning that people
- 5:30again spent of years developing and like
- 5:34and and pouring their their life into.
- 5:37And so, your sun sign is like it's fun
- 5:40to share. It's very meme-able. It's very
- 5:43game-able.
- 5:44Um it's very shareable. And so, it's an
- 5:47entry point, but it has so little to do
- 5:51with the reality of what we're actually
- 5:53looking at when we look at your chart.
- 5:55>> Yeah, that's relieving.
- 5:56>> Yeah.
- 5:57>> That's good. Yeah, it's it's really
- 5:58helpful because I feel like you're
- 6:00absolutely right it's shareable, it's
- 6:02interesting, it's fun to talk about, but
- 6:04then when you look at how valuable it is
- 6:08or how accurate it is, naturally it's
- 6:10never going to feel that way.
- 6:11>> Yeah.
- 6:12>> It's the same as a broad personality
- 6:14test that divides you into four core
- 6:16personality types. It's like of course
- 6:18we're far more complex and layered than
- 6:20that. And we all believe that especially
- 6:22as we get older. Can you explain you've
- 6:24been referencing birth chart and chart?
- 6:26Can you explain
- 6:28what that birth chart is? I imagine it's
- 6:30when you're born as you were saying
- 6:31where everything lands in the sky, but
- 6:33can you explain how someone can read
- 6:34that chart? What does that mean to read
- 6:36someone's birth chart?
- 6:38>> Yeah, so it's a snapshot of the sky the
- 6:39moment that you were born from the exact
- 6:41location and time that you were born.
- 6:43And everything in it
- 6:45is in relationship to each other. So
- 6:48you're actually describing
- 6:50all of the relationships that make up
- 6:52your life.
- 6:53And
- 6:55it is, you know, you can look at it
- 6:57through the lens of your personality,
- 6:59which is one thing. I think it can be
- 7:01quite reductive when we do that.
- 7:03But what like ancient or traditional
- 7:05astrology is more about is looking at
- 7:08the quality of
- 7:10each area of your life. Like where can
- 7:13someone expect to have success, where
- 7:16can someone expect to have maybe some
- 7:18difficulty. What are the things that are
- 7:21like working for them and what are the
- 7:23things that are going to be a challenge
- 7:25and therefore
- 7:27a growth edge and therefore an
- 7:28opportunity to develop themselves. And
- 7:31so you can
- 7:33glean somebody's like nature from it,
- 7:36but it's really about like, you know, if
- 7:38someone's struggling to find love in
- 7:40their life and you look at their chart
- 7:43and you see like, oh yeah, I can
- 7:44understand why that's a struggle. It
- 7:47doesn't mean that they're going to be in
- 7:48a struggle forever. It means that
- 7:50they're the chart is going to
- 7:52distinguish what the thing is and
- 7:55therefore once we know what the issue
- 7:58is, we can work more clearly or more
- 8:01definitively towards the solution for
- 8:04that thing. And so it can be a really
- 8:06great aid in terms of like, what's what
- 8:10is the pain that you're carrying? Like,
- 8:12what are the things that you're burdened
- 8:13with in this life?
- 8:15Your chart will reveal that. And that
- 8:19can also be a real solace cuz it can
- 8:22feel sometimes like we have this thing
- 8:25that's like against us in life. Like,
- 8:26why does why won't this thing work out
- 8:28for me? Or why doesn't this
- 8:29ever kind of take shape for me? And when
- 8:32you can see it in the chart, you can be
- 8:34like, oh, okay. That's just a a setup.
- 8:39But there's other ways to work with that
- 8:41thing. But I have to know what the issue
- 8:44is first. And so, I think that astrology
- 8:47helps us to identify if you have
- 8:50somebody, you know, adept looking at
- 8:51your chart, or if you have, you know,
- 8:53good education around like what it
- 8:55actually is, then we can use the chart
- 8:58to really open up those doors for us.
- 9:01Because without knowing what the issue
- 9:03is, it's really hard to
- 9:05try to meet it.
- 9:06>> Yeah. So, you can do that through
- 9:07therapy, you can do that through a lot
- 9:09of different avenues. Again, astrology
- 9:11is one of them.
- 9:11>> How much you How much of this is Is it
- 9:14so important? You just said that the
- 9:15practitioner needs to be adept.
- 9:17>> Yeah.
- 9:18>> And it almost feels like to me that the
- 9:20recipient needs to be adept as well.
- 9:22>> Yes.
- 9:22>> And
- 9:23>> [laughter]
- 9:23>> what I What I mean by that What I mean
- 9:24by that is like I I've always looked at
- 9:27So, I never studied this, but as part of
- 9:30my teachings in the monastery, we had
- 9:34people who practiced Vedic astrology,
- 9:36mhm, which is thousands and thousands of
- 9:37years years old. People had incredible
- 9:40experiences of
- 9:42uh using There's places in India's where
- 9:43they use leaves and there's writings on
- 9:46leaves, there's charts with literally
- 9:47like strings attached. I mean, it's it's
- 9:49spectacular the the culture and the
- 9:51history of it. But what I found was
- 9:54that, for example, if I know it's going
- 9:57to rain tomorrow,
- 9:59and there's an adept weather forecast
- 10:01with By the way, I don't know who does
- 10:02good weather forecast anyway. [laughter]
- 10:04But let's say it's going to rain
- 10:05tomorrow. As an adept person who's
- 10:07looking at that forecast, I know
- 10:09tomorrow I better take my umbrella, my
- 10:12uh
- 10:13uh boots that I'm happy to get wet in
- 10:15the rain and a raincoat. And so it
- 10:16requires me to adapt to the information.
- 10:20>> Mhm.
- 10:20>> Whereas often what I've found today is
- 10:22when people feel like they're going
- 10:24through a bad phase or there's something
- 10:26not working for them. It's kind of like,
- 10:27"Well, I can't do anything right now cuz
- 10:29I'm going through a bad phase." And
- 10:30that's like me saying, "Well, I can't
- 10:32have fun tomorrow cuz it's going to
- 10:33rain."
- 10:33>> Yeah.
- 10:34>> So talk to me about that and and if I'm
- 10:35wrong, feel free to correct me. I'm just
- 10:37sharing it from what I've heard and
- 10:39seen.
- 10:39>> Yeah. Yeah, it is the human problem. It
- 10:42is the human condition, I think, to try
- 10:45to reduce things down to something
- 10:47that's simple enough to either
- 10:50blame life on or to try to like figure
- 10:54out really quickly. And we also try to,
- 10:57I think, have one answer for everything.
- 11:01So, you know, I mean, I get why it's so
- 11:03annoying cuz everyone will be like, "Oh,
- 11:05Mercury retrograde." You're like, "No,
- 11:06that's not what it's about."
- 11:08>> I mean, [laughter] yeah, but I'm going
- 11:08to ask you about that in a bit.
- 11:10>> That's not you can't do that. Like, you
- 11:11can't blame every or I hear people say,
- 11:14"Well, you know, I'm a Scorpio." And I'm
- 11:15like, "That has nothing to do with being
- 11:17a Scorpio." Like, I I get the desire to
- 11:20do that, but that's not you're using a
- 11:23hammer to do everything, and you need a
- 11:25feather sometimes. And like, you need
- 11:27different tools. So, yeah, it's um it is
- 11:32a it's a it's an interesting thing
- 11:34because when we're going into a time
- 11:37period looks really complex
- 11:38astrologically,
- 11:40you want to hold it with like, "Okay,
- 11:42this looks like it's going to challenge
- 11:44us. It looks like it's going to require
- 11:47a lot of mindfulness from us, and it
- 11:49looks like it's going to require a lot
- 11:51of tenacity, and it looks like it's
- 11:52going to require more from us in general
- 11:54times."
- 11:56Great. So, now we know that, so show up
- 11:59How can I help people show up to that
- 12:01moment
- 12:02not
- 12:04reducing it down to everything's going
- 12:07to be awful or this is why this is
- 12:08happening.
- 12:10Because if we lived in a world where
- 12:13compassion and you know, thoughtfulness
- 12:15and community and people's health and
- 12:18well-being were front and center, then
- 12:20bad astrology wouldn't be that bad. It's
- 12:23not the astrology that's making things
- 12:25bad.
- 12:26It's revealing or it's it's giving you a
- 12:28kind of understanding of of again
- 12:30certain cycles and timings of things.
- 12:34And so if we can see like well, what
- 12:35happened the last time this cycle
- 12:38happened and what what worked, then we
- 12:40can use it as something that's
- 12:42empowering.
- 12:44If astrology isn't empowering, I don't
- 12:46think you should use it.
- 12:48>> Mhm.
- 12:48>> If you feel like astrology is reducing
- 12:50you to something or freaking you out or
- 12:52making you paranoid, I don't think it's
- 12:54working. I think you should put it down
- 12:56and not pick it up again
- 12:57>> Mhm.
- 12:58>> until that passes or maybe for the rest
- 13:00of your life. Like it should help you to
- 13:03feel like you're more located and you're
- 13:07better prepared. Like it's I love the
- 13:09rain. So if it's going to rain tomorrow,
- 13:11great. Maybe I can like have, you know,
- 13:13a moody day where I drink tea and write
- 13:15in my journal.
- 13:18That's my fantasy. I have a child, so I
- 13:19can't do that. [laughter]
- 13:20>> I love that now.
- 13:21>> I remember days like that.
- 13:23>> I love that now.
- 13:24Uh what's the difference between your
- 13:26sun, your moon, and your rising? Because
- 13:29you hear people use this language all
- 13:30the time.
- 13:30>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:31>> What's the difference? What does it
- 13:32mean?
- 13:32>> Yeah. Well, your rising sign is the
- 13:35marker of your life. It is the marker of
- 13:37your yes to life. So it's the marker of
- 13:40your motivation. It is what you're
- 13:42motivated to do here in the world. And
- 13:45it is your yes. It's like, okay, I'm
- 13:47here. I'm born.
- 13:49Your sun is how you shine. It's like
- 13:51part of how you illuminate, how your
- 13:53soul illuminates things. It's like what
- 13:56lights you up. And your moon is your
- 13:58body. Your moon is the physical world.
- 14:01If you think of the moon as a reflector
- 14:02of the sun's light, the moon in our
- 14:06chart reflects the light of our soul,
- 14:08the light of our sun. And we can only
- 14:11have this incarnation through the body.
- 14:14And so it it's the holder, the keeper of
- 14:17memory. It is about the physical world
- 14:20and the physical realm and how sacred it
- 14:22is to have
- 14:23a body to have incarnated into.
- 14:26And we get to do our life purpose
- 14:28through our body a little bit every day.
- 14:30Come the tiredness and the joy and the
- 14:33all the things with the body keeps the
- 14:35score of all of that, so to speak.
- 14:37>> So when you're reading someone's birth
- 14:38chart, you're seeing all of these. Could
- 14:40you give examples of what would fit into
- 14:42each one for
- 14:44anyone that you've read before?
- 14:45Randomly, obviously, you know.
- 14:47>> Yeah, yeah. Um
- 14:49Well, like when someone has a Leo
- 14:52rising, then they're motivated to show
- 14:54up and really shine in the world.
- 14:57They're motivated to illuminate
- 15:00something, to be charming, to be
- 15:02adorable, to be like a recipient of
- 15:05people's adoration or attention. But
- 15:08what it also does, the rising sign gives
- 15:10you a key to the meaning of your life
- 15:13because it the planet that rules that
- 15:15sign
- 15:16is the planet that steers the ship of
- 15:18your life. And so if you feel lost, if
- 15:21you feel like you're not sure what your
- 15:22purpose is,
- 15:24one of the quickest ways to understand
- 15:27it astrologically is to understand where
- 15:29the planet that rules your rising sign
- 15:32is.
- 15:33And so if you're the ruler of your
- 15:35rising sign is in your 10th house of
- 15:37career, then
- 15:38that's it's going to be a major part. If
- 15:41it's in your sixth house of service,
- 15:44then maybe your your volunteering is
- 15:47going to be, you know, it's like where
- 15:49are the planets located and what job are
- 15:52they doing? The planet that rules your
- 15:54ascendant is literally at the helm of
- 15:57the ship of your life.
- 15:58And so quite often when I give people
- 16:00readings and over the years I've given
- 16:03mostly strangers readings. And you know,
- 16:05back before Zoom, before the pandemic,
- 16:08when we were all on Skype, I wouldn't
- 16:10even see the people. I mean, I guess we
- 16:12could have cameras, but mostly it was
- 16:13like I was almost like on the phone with
- 16:15people. And like all over the world. And
- 16:18so I didn't know them, I had never seen
- 16:20them, I don't know anything about you.
- 16:22I'm just going to read your chart.
- 16:24I'd start there, and 99% of the time
- 16:28people would be so relieved to hear that
- 16:31that's what that was.
- 16:33Because quite often they hadn't been
- 16:36fully [snorts] living into it, or it was
- 16:38just so innate that that's always what
- 16:40they did, and they're like, "Oh, that's
- 16:41Yes, that is that thing. That's what
- 16:43I've always been known for." And so when
- 16:45you're not living in accordance with
- 16:48these
- 16:49these kind of like signs to me in your
- 16:51chart, if you're not living in
- 16:52accordance with your purpose,
- 16:54then everything is going to feel wrong,
- 16:57and everything's going to feel
- 16:59misaligned. Like for myself, I never
- 17:02thought I would write a book. It's not
- 17:04anything I would ever think of, but
- 17:07nothing in my life was working.
- 17:09And I felt so stuck, and I felt so
- 17:14I felt like such a failure. I felt like
- 17:15I couldn't figure out my place in the
- 17:17world.
- 17:18And [snorts] I started writing, and
- 17:19people started reading it, and it
- 17:21started to take off, and I was like,
- 17:22"What is this? This is wild." And it
- 17:26wasn't until I started working with my
- 17:27teacher,
- 17:29the person who would like really teach
- 17:31me about the lineage that I practice in,
- 17:34that I understood how important it was
- 17:37to follow that mark in my chart, because
- 17:39the ruler of my ascendant is in the
- 17:41third house of writing and speaking and
- 17:42teaching.
- 17:44But that's nothing I had put together
- 17:45before. Like you can look at your, you
- 17:47know, your own chart. You look at
- 17:48yourself in the mirror, you can read
- 17:49your You can look at yourself all the
- 17:51time and not get it.
- 17:53The beauty of having a therapist or a
- 17:55guide or a coach or an astrologer,
- 17:57somebody that's got some wisdom, is that
- 18:00they hold that third space for you, so
- 18:03that you can have that kind of
- 18:04self-reflection.
- 18:06So, coming to know that like that
- 18:11natural inkling in me was there
- 18:14in my chart, gave me the permission to
- 18:17just fully do it.
- 18:19>> Yeah.
- 18:19>> And then everything started to work.
- 18:22Like
- 18:23overnight I people started to pass my
- 18:26stuff around. I met my wife within 6
- 18:29months. I mean, like things just blew
- 18:31up. And it was because of that I
- 18:33remember the moment where she was like,
- 18:34well, the ruler of your sentence in the
- 18:36third house and I was like
- 18:38oh, and it all just clicked. And I'd
- 18:41always wanted to write, but I never
- 18:43thought I was smart enough. I didn't
- 18:44think I was educated enough. I didn't
- 18:47think I was able to do it.
- 18:49And it's literally one of the things
- 18:52that changed my entire life and it's
- 18:55right there plain as day in my chart and
- 18:57I didn't see it for like 20 years.
- 19:00>> Wow.
- 19:01>> Cuz I started looking at astrology and
- 19:03understanding my chart at like age 12.
- 19:05>> Wow.
- 19:06>> So, but I didn't really I didn't really
- 19:09know what I was looking cuz I didn't
- 19:10have traditional astrology.
- 19:12>> Right, right, right.
- 19:12>> So, you know, when you meet your teacher
- 19:14also everything really starts to come
- 19:17into practice and into place. And so,
- 19:19when I met my astrology teacher
- 19:22and she taught me this really ancient
- 19:24traditional way of doing astrology
- 19:26it just landed everything and it was
- 19:29like this whole rubric that was so clear
- 19:33and so concise and so specific and so
- 19:36not about my intuition or not about, you
- 19:39know, what I felt about the chart or
- 19:41anything like that. Not about like, oh,
- 19:43I knew this Scorpio once and they did
- 19:44this. It's like really like, no, if this
- 19:46is here, this means this.
- 19:48>> Yeah.
- 19:49>> Do this and see what happens.
- 19:51>> So, so you're actually saying that
- 19:52astrology
- 19:54is
- 19:55guiding us when you say purpose.
- 19:57>> Mhm.
- 19:58>> But really you're talking about
- 20:00activity, task
- 20:01methodology. Like you said, writing,
- 20:04speaking, teaching.
- 20:05>> Yeah.
- 20:05>> I have a lot of friends who say to me
- 20:07and then not they're not speaking
- 20:08astrologically, they're just speaking in
- 20:10self-awareness.
- 20:11>> Yeah.
- 20:11>> They're saying, Jay, this is just who I
- 20:12am. They're like, Jay, you're ambitious,
- 20:13you're driven.
- 20:14>> Yeah.
- 20:15>> You know, I'm not.
- 20:15>> Yeah.
- 20:16>> And so, you know, this is just my life.
- 20:18And I'm like, well, I don't know if I
- 20:21was always ambitious or driven. I feel
- 20:22like there were I learned and habits I
- 20:24developed and there were coaches and
- 20:26mentors in my life who taught me certain
- 20:28things and you can build confidence and
- 20:30you can build skill sets that allow you
- 20:32to live a better life. And I don't just
- 20:34mean materially, I mean spiritually as
- 20:36well.
- 20:36>> Yeah.
- 20:36>> And they'll be like, "No, no, no, but
- 20:38you know, some of us are wired like you
- 20:39and some of us are not." So,
- 20:41is that true? Is that
- 20:43>> I mean, there's I think there's some
- 20:44truth to that.
- 20:45>> Okay, so yeah.
- 20:46>> But I think you can choose to not
- 20:49rest there, right? Like it's do you what
- 20:52do you want from this life? It's really
- 20:54about that. Like are those people happy?
- 20:56Or are they suffering? Right. [laughter]
- 20:59>> But are they interested in their
- 21:01suffering enough to do something to
- 21:03change it?
- 21:04And so what I'll look for is is time
- 21:07periods that will come along and kind of
- 21:09put the pressure on and be like, this
- 21:11you're going to If you haven't done your
- 21:13work, if you haven't individuated, if
- 21:15you haven't really tried to build
- 21:17something in yourself
- 21:20of your own efforts,
- 21:22then this period of time is going to
- 21:24really be rough.
- 21:26>> Mhm.
- 21:26>> But that's good for you. Like
- 21:28>> [laughter]
- 21:29>> you know, like Saturn will come along as
- 21:31a planet of boundaries and structure and
- 21:33it will come along and hold you in place
- 21:36until you figure out how to either
- 21:40find another way to move or to like lift
- 21:44the weight that's on you
- 21:46enough times until you get strong enough
- 21:48to move it completely.
- 21:50>> Mhm.
- 21:51>> And Saturn's a a planet that you can
- 21:52also look at in terms of your life
- 21:54cycle. So, Saturn comes along every 7
- 21:57years and does something really
- 21:58important. So, at age 7, it comes along
- 22:00and helps you to distinguish yourself a
- 22:02little bit from your parents. Helps you
- 22:04to find like your own And then at age
- 22:0614, age 14 is usually it's that's called
- 22:09a Saturn opposition and it's usually a
- 22:11time where something happens in our life
- 22:13and you know, we're 14, so it kind of
- 22:15makes sense psychologically speaking,
- 22:18but something happens where we're like,
- 22:20wait a minute, this is what I want, this
- 22:22is what you want, these are the
- 22:23expectations you have on me, this is
- 22:25what And then at 21, we have another one
- 22:27and it's part of the adult cycle. And
- 22:29then from 28 to 30, Saturn closes the
- 22:33loop and we go through something called
- 22:34a Saturn return.
- 22:35And that's where we move through our
- 22:37first really big threshold, where we
- 22:40move from whatever remnants of being a
- 22:43child or whatever remnants of being a
- 22:45young adult kind of like have to trickle
- 22:48away and we're asked to move and cross a
- 22:50threshold into our true adulthood and
- 22:53take responsibility for our decisions
- 22:56and our actions.
- 22:58And so if you miss that, if you're like,
- 23:00"Nah." It's going to be harder and
- 23:03harder and you'll have like in the next
- 23:057 years, you'll have another moment of
- 23:08struggle. And so that like saying the
- 23:097-year itch is interesting cuz it is
- 23:12like a Saturn cycle.
- 23:13>> Yeah. And even in marriage, right? Like
- 23:15most divorces happen at 5 to 7 years.
- 23:17>> Oh.
- 23:18>> Yeah.
- 23:20>> Yeah, it's that friction point. Mhm.
- 23:22>> Fascinating. Okay, well, you write in
- 23:24your book that our chart isn't our fate.
- 23:27It's an invitation and I think this idea
- 23:30of fate and free will and you mentioned
- 23:31it earlier, but what does astrology
- 23:33believe about fate and free will? Do we
- 23:36have agency or is everything
- 23:37predetermined?
- 23:38>> You and I right now are in this city.
- 23:41We're not in a city, we're not in
- 23:43France, we're here.
- 23:45And so
- 23:46there's certain conditions here. We
- 23:48can't do everything here.
- 23:51But we can do all the things in in this
- 23:53city that we can do. And so it's the
- 23:55same with your chart. It's like you're
- 23:56given a landscape, what do you want to
- 23:59do with that?
- 24:01How do you want to approach it?
- 24:02>> Yeah.
- 24:03>> And how do you want to work with these
- 24:05really specific skills in this really
- 24:07specific setup?
- 24:09>> Yeah, it's almost like I was born in
- 24:10London.
- 24:10>> Yeah.
- 24:11>> You were born in Canada.
- 24:12>> Yeah.
- 24:12>> And that created a certain environment
- 24:16of what was available, what I was aware
- 24:18of,
- 24:19>> Yeah.
- 24:19>> what was possible.
- 24:20>> Yeah.
- 24:21>> But somehow I've ended up in LA, you
- 24:23lived in LA and you live in New York
- 24:25now.
- 24:25>> Yeah.
- 24:26>> And if someone told me
- 24:27all the way up until the age of
- 24:2928,
- 24:31which is when I moved to New York, if
- 24:32anyone told me I would ever
- 24:33>> Better return.
- 24:34>> Yeah.
- 24:34>> [laughter]
- 24:34>> If anyone told me up until that age that
- 24:36I would ever live in any other place
- 24:38apart from Northwest London, I wouldn't
- 24:40have believed it.
- 24:40>> Wow. Oh, so you left London at 28?
- 24:43>> I Yeah, I The first time I left was when
- 24:44I lived in India for a period of my time
- 24:46as a monk. And then I left when I came
- 24:49and lived in New York first and then now
- 24:51LA. And so
- 24:54the reason I'm bringing that up is to
- 24:55say that
- 24:57there is more choice
- 24:59>> Mhm.
- 24:59>> and [clears throat] free will and agency
- 25:01than we sometimes think when you're
- 25:03looking at astrology and you might
- 25:05consider everything's predetermined.
- 25:07>> Yeah, yeah. Like I know, you know, I'll
- 25:08see like harrowing transits come up for
- 25:11me and I have to be like I'm not going
- 25:13to catastrophize this.
- 25:15But I have to work against it, you know,
- 25:17it is just a natural human thing. And
- 25:20then I'll live through it and I'll be
- 25:21like, "Oh, that was totally different
- 25:23than I thought, but it's so emblematic
- 25:25of what it was."
- 25:27And I absolutely needed to go through
- 25:29that.
- 25:31It's always about like distancing
- 25:33yourself enough from the thing, from
- 25:36your astrology chart, from the thing
- 25:38that you're going through so that you
- 25:40can understand what life is trying to
- 25:41teach you.
- 25:43So when people come to me and they're
- 25:44like really in
- 25:47trouble or they're really
- 25:49in a lot of pain sometimes it can help
- 25:52to be like, "Yeah, this started 6 months
- 25:54ago and it's going to last for like
- 25:56another 8 months. You're in the middle
- 25:58of it. You know what it is. This is it."
- 26:02Like how else to How do you want to hold
- 26:03this? How do you want to work with this?
- 26:05What is this teaching you?
- 26:07Like this
- 26:10might be some suffering, but what else
- 26:12is here to
- 26:15to teach you? Or what is it here to
- 26:18teach you? What can you learn? And
- 26:20if
- 26:21if I am struggling and I look and see
- 26:24I'm in a challenging aspect then
- 26:28I can be like, "Oh, okay. Then it's not
- 26:30just out of the It doesn't feel random,
- 26:32I think, for some people.
- 26:34And so that's the other side of like,
- 26:36Mercury's retrograde and nothing's going
- 26:37to work out.
- 26:38>> [laughter]
- 26:39>> We don't want to do that.
- 26:41But we do want to use it and be like,
- 26:42okay, it's just a time period. It's just
- 26:44a cycle that we're in, that I'm in.
- 26:46>> What do you feel, having helped so many
- 26:48people, being deep into this work?
- 26:51How have you seen astrology really help
- 26:53people? Where has it truly changed
- 26:55people's lives?
- 26:56>> I think it really truly changes people's
- 26:58lives when they need the confirmation
- 27:02that their soul's purpose is what they
- 27:06think it is.
- 27:08So,
- 27:09like I remember when I met my wife, I
- 27:11refused to look at her astrology chart.
- 27:13I didn't want to see it. I didn't want
- 27:15to know. So, I sent her to my teacher.
- 27:17And she got a reading and my teacher
- 27:19didn't know anything about her.
- 27:22Looked at her chart and said, oh,
- 27:25your your life's work is in the realm of
- 27:28gender-based violence.
- 27:29And she was like, yeah. But she was a
- 27:32banker at the time.
- 27:34And she wasn't
- 27:36valuing that part of her work, even
- 27:38though it was something she had done
- 27:39since she was 16.
- 27:41And that reading gave her the kind of
- 27:45affirmation she needed to
- 27:48move fully towards it. And it's one
- 27:51simple thing. You know, it's one thing
- 27:53that someone says to you.
- 27:55And it's
- 27:57quite often at those junctures in our
- 28:00life, we just need that one thing, that
- 28:03one person to just hold that little bit
- 28:05of space for us to say, yeah, you are.
- 28:08There it is. It's plain as day.
- 28:11And then you can then you, again, have
- 28:13to go off and do all the work. Astrology
- 28:15is not going to do the work for you.
- 28:16>> Yeah, you have to act on that insight.
- 28:18>> Yeah, it's
- 28:18>> But that insight can be so reassuring
- 28:21and reaffirming, totally, because
- 28:22>> Yeah.
- 28:24>> everyone else has been reminding you of
- 28:25the opposite ever since you were born.
- 28:26>> Right. We have a lot of obligations. We
- 28:28have a lot of responsibilities. A lot of
- 28:30people want us to be a certain way, not
- 28:33because they're bad people, but just
- 28:35because of whatever conditions we're in.
- 28:38And
- 28:39astrology
- 28:40is one tool that can help you to
- 28:44distinguish yourself.
- 28:46And really see yourself a lot more
- 28:48clearly.
- 28:50And so when you do, I think
- 28:53if you're conscious, then you can take
- 28:55action.
- 28:56>> Mhm.
- 28:56>> Until we have consciousness around
- 28:58something, we don't really have a lot of
- 29:00choice.
- 29:00>> Mhm.
- 29:01>> But once something comes into awareness
- 29:04and consciousness, we then have choice.
- 29:06What am I going to do with this
- 29:07information? How am I going to act? Is
- 29:10this mine to do something with? And so
- 29:12if you need that,
- 29:14then a a good astrology reading should
- 29:17be able to give you the shape of
- 29:20yourself in a in a really clear and
- 29:23specific way.
- 29:24>> Mhm.
- 29:24>> And then you get to choose what you want
- 29:26to do with that information.
- 29:28>> Mhm. So many people talk about Saturn
- 29:30return.
- 29:31>> Yeah.
- 29:31>> What is it actually?
- 29:33>> It's when Saturn comes back to the same
- 29:35place it was when you were born. And
- 29:36because Saturn is the planet that
- 29:40to the naked eye is the last planet in
- 29:42the in our little solar system,
- 29:45it was thought as such a big moment
- 29:48because every 28 years you go through
- 29:50this closing of a loop. So between the
- 29:53age of 27-ish, 28, 27 to 30, you go
- 29:57through this kind of closing of a door
- 30:00and a threshold experience into a new
- 30:04stage of life. Saturn is the planet of
- 30:06responsibility and of
- 30:09adulthood. And it's also the planet
- 30:12that's of mortality. It's like, "Hey,
- 30:14I'm the time lord. Like you don't have
- 30:16all the time in the world." So at 30,
- 30:19you should be going through some kind of
- 30:21crisis. Some kind of like, "Oh, I guess
- 30:24I'm going to get old, too."
- 30:25And you should also be doing things
- 30:29>> [snorts]
- 30:29>> that require
- 30:32everything from you. Saturn is a planet
- 30:34of discipline and hard work. And so this
- 30:37is the time to put your money where your
- 30:39mouth is, to like be
- 30:43in the game fully and to
- 30:45again own your choice
- 30:47and to say I chose to do this. And it's
- 30:50also a planet of separation. So in some
- 30:53way, shape or form, we usually separate
- 30:54from our family of origin. Maybe that's
- 30:56psychologically, maybe it's physically,
- 31:00maybe we get married, maybe you know,
- 31:02some kind of big life transition happens
- 31:04at that time that distinguishes us from
- 31:07our family of origin. Not that we're not
- 31:09still part of it and we could still be
- 31:11living at home even in well and you
- 31:13know, for the rest of our lives. But
- 31:14there's something here that's like I
- 31:16have to build a really solid foundation
- 31:19in the world
- 31:21that is mine, that is apart from the
- 31:24thing that I come from or apart from the
- 31:26convenience or the comfort of the people
- 31:29that you know, hopefully you have people
- 31:31that love you and you can feel like you
- 31:32can fall back on them. But you need to
- 31:33understand that you can go out there and
- 31:35do something for yourself or that you
- 31:39can separate in the ways that you need
- 31:41to separate psychologically,
- 31:43emotionally, sometimes physically,
- 31:45sometimes monetarily.
- 31:46>> negative thing at all.
- 31:47>> really common.
- 31:48>> why do we talk about it in such a
- 31:49>> Because the internet.
- 31:51>> [laughter]
- 31:51>> Because people are like oh, my Saturn
- 31:53return was awful.
- 31:54>> Yeah.
- 31:55>> And then they blame everything on the
- 31:56Saturn return.
- 31:58But a Saturn return should be a time of
- 32:02of a kind of like again, discipline,
- 32:04awareness, strictness almost, like
- 32:07severity sometimes, but also like so
- 32:11much joy. Like in my Saturn return, I
- 32:13moved to LA.
- 32:14>> Yeah.
- 32:14>> And I was I didn't know anybody here. I
- 32:17didn't have any money. I didn't have any
- 32:18contacts. I didn't have anything. And I
- 32:21was
- 32:22like elated.
- 32:24>> Mhm.
- 32:24>> I really did walk out of my life. I was
- 32:26living in Toronto. And I I left and I
- 32:30started this whole new chapter here.
- 32:33And it was on my own terms and I had to
- 32:36really prove myself to myself yeah, that
- 32:39I could do this.
- 32:41And there were days where I didn't have
- 32:43anybody to call and there were
- 32:45financial struggles and I didn't have a
- 32:48car and like it was a whole thing, but I
- 32:50did it. And that no one could ever take
- 32:54that away from me.
- 32:54>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:55>> And as much as I believe in community
- 32:57and I believe that we shouldn't live in
- 32:59an individualistic kind of culture, we
- 33:02have to do those things that help us
- 33:05understand what we're made of.
- 33:07>> Yeah.
- 33:07>> That help us understand like put me
- 33:10anywhere and I'll figure it out. That's
- 33:12how I function at least. And so that
- 33:14happens at there's a version of that
- 33:16that happens at seven, at 14, at 21 and
- 33:18then at like 28-ish, that's the big one.
- 33:21>> relate to every single thing you just
- 33:23said.
- 33:23>> Yeah.
- 33:24>> Every single thing you said. It's it's
- 33:26so vivid for me. It's like 14 and I mean
- 33:29this is small, but
- 33:31I remember at 14 that's like the age in
- 33:33England that you decide what you're
- 33:34going to study for like Like it's it's
- 33:37an you do it quite early, I assume. So I
- 33:40remember like fighting with my parents
- 33:41about what I wanted to focus on and I
- 33:43won and did what I wanted to do. And
- 33:45that's when I felt first felt confidence
- 33:47in who I was and my ability and then 21
- 33:50going on 22, I decided to go live as a
- 33:52monk.
- 33:52>> Oh my god.
- 33:53>> was a big decision. And then 28, I moved
- 33:55to New York and I was in New York for
- 33:57two years going through exactly what you
- 33:58said when you moved to LA.
- 34:00>> Yeah.
- 34:01>> And it's amazing how that tracks and 38,
- 34:04so I've been through 35 as well.
- 34:06>> Yeah.
- 34:06>> Um which
- 34:08>> Yeah, you plant
- 34:09>> amazing year, but
- 34:10>> You plant a seed at the Saturn return
- 34:12cycle of your own selfhood, of your own
- 34:15adulthood.
- 34:16>> Yeah.
- 34:16>> You're like, I'm going to stake a claim
- 34:18here. Maybe this is hard, maybe it
- 34:20sucks, maybe I'm lonely.
- 34:21>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:22>> But I'm doing this.
- 34:23>> Yep.
- 34:23>> And this is my choice. And then by the
- 34:25time you get to 36, you're at that next
- 34:28first quarter square and you get to see
- 34:30what worked.
- 34:32>> Wow.
- 34:32>> Like what from that seed that you
- 34:34planted at around 30 is growing.
- 34:37>> Right.
- 34:37>> And then you're like, okay, I'm either
- 34:38going to double down on that now
- 34:41or it's not a viable option. And so it's
- 34:44this really
- 34:45I think really helpful kind of growth
- 34:47cycle.
- 34:47>> so important because we almost look at
- 34:49all the wrong ages.
- 34:51>> Yeah.
- 34:52>> [laughter]
- 34:52>> Uh like if you look at the material take
- 34:54on it, it's like we look always we look
- 34:55at like 16 or 18 becoming an 18 becoming
- 34:59an adult. Like sweet 16 birthday, 18
- 35:02becoming an adult. 21 sure you graduate,
- 35:04so that feels on track. But then it
- 35:06almost was like after 21 no one cares.
- 35:08And then it's like I'm 30 and I'm 40 and
- 35:10then you're just scared about
- 35:12>> Yeah, and then you're like crisis.
- 35:13>> decade. Yeah, so it's it's less about
- 35:16growth, it's less about I I loved what
- 35:19you were saying about how like from 28
- 35:21to 30 that whole idea was I'm locking
- 35:23in, I choose what I focus on,
- 35:25the discipline, the grit. I mean I can
- 35:27relate to every single one of those
- 35:29things.
- 35:29>> I have to put I have to invest in
- 35:31myself. So we're talking about those
- 35:32people earlier that maybe have a really
- 35:35easy situation.
- 35:37If they don't do that Saturn return
- 35:39thing, and they just kind of fall back
- 35:42on what's easy, then at 36 it gets
- 35:45harder, and then again at like the early
- 35:4840s it does too. And it's is Saturn is
- 35:51also this like market can feel
- 35:53depressive.
- 35:55Until again you kind of start to work
- 35:57towards well, what is the discipline
- 35:59that I need in order to do this? But
- 36:02some of us really like thrive on
- 36:04discipline, and some of us [laughter]
- 36:06really have a hard time with it.
- 36:08You know, there are signatures in the
- 36:09chart. I have I have some friends like
- 36:11this that they're just so good at having
- 36:13fun. And so it's hard to like gather
- 36:16them and to like help them to focus.
- 36:20Because part of the signature of their
- 36:22life is to like enjoy things.
- 36:24And then you have to kind of like work
- 36:27against that somewhat.
- 36:28>> Yeah. So if someone's about to enter
- 36:30their Saturn return,
- 36:32what would you recommend they do?
- 36:34>> Do the things that are hard that are
- 36:36going to that are going to require
- 36:37everything from you that are going to be
- 36:41worthwhile in the long run.
- 36:43Like what is going to be satisfying to
- 36:45you 7 years from now? Do not think about
- 36:48instant gratification. Do not This is
- 36:51not a social media game. Like this is
- 36:54about
- 36:55if you only had 7 years left, what would
- 36:58you do?
- 37:00Like what do you want to make sure
- 37:01you've left here?
- 37:03And what would move you deeper into your
- 37:06integrity?
- 37:08So that you were proud of even having
- 37:11attempted it.
- 37:13And if it's not that serious, then it's
- 37:16not really either part of your Saturn
- 37:19return or it's not going to last for
- 37:20that long.
- 37:22>> [snorts]
- 37:22>> And so if you It's a lot of times people
- 37:24will get to that age and you'll start to
- 37:26see their life crack because they've
- 37:29spent their 20s in an industry that
- 37:32maybe wasn't industry of their dreams or
- 37:34that took everything from them and they
- 37:36realized it's not really their calling.
- 37:39And so they've been locked in this maybe
- 37:41like corporate thing or they've been
- 37:42locked in this other, you know,
- 37:44relationship and you start to feel the
- 37:46cracks show at around 28, 29, 30.
- 37:50And so this is your chance. This is like
- 37:53a portal of time. I mean, any day is
- 37:55your chance, but this is a time where
- 37:56the pressure
- 37:58and the gravity of what doesn't feel
- 38:00good in your life will become really
- 38:03acute.
- 38:04So if you're fearing your Saturn return,
- 38:08you're actually fearing the truth of
- 38:10your situation.
- 38:12And you're fearing confronting
- 38:15what you actually need to do
- 38:17and the work it will take to do it.
- 38:19And that's fine. You can fear it,
- 38:22but you can also just like embrace it
- 38:25and move into it. And and be okay with I
- 38:30think you also have to be okay with
- 38:32being alone, going it alone.
- 38:34You have to be okay with doing something
- 38:37that wasn't expected.
- 38:38You have to be okay with disappointing
- 38:40people. And it's a time where you're
- 38:42supposed to learn about boundaries.
- 38:45And so if you can't have a boundary with
- 38:49yourself,
- 38:50which is to say, I will not abandon
- 38:53myself,
- 38:55then it's going to be really rough. But,
- 38:57if you promise that you will not abandon
- 39:00yourself, you will not abandon your
- 39:01gifts and your talents and your inner
- 39:04knowing,
- 39:05then the Saturn return will really set
- 39:07you on a course that feels like
- 39:10liberation.
- 39:11Because it's stripping you down and
- 39:14being like, it's this or it's going to
- 39:18be
- 39:19Like, what pain do you want to choose?
- 39:21You want to choose the pain of choosing
- 39:22the thing you know you need to choose,
- 39:24or do you want to choose the pain of
- 39:25denying that?
- 39:27And that's kind of the crossroads that
- 39:29the Saturn return finds us at.
- 39:31>> You have totally redefined my
- 39:32perspective of Saturn return.
- 39:34>> [laughter]
- 39:35>> Oh, good.
- 39:35>> Really. And it's so much more powerful
- 39:36as well. It's so
- 39:37>> Yeah, it is. It's so powerful.
- 39:39>> so empowering. It's so clear. It's so
- 39:42It's so It better than It's so
- 39:45clarifying.
- 39:46>> Mhm.
- 39:46>> I know you have completely expanded my
- 39:48viewpoint, opened my mind in an
- 39:50incredible way,
- 39:52and answered so many
- 39:54hopefully not stupid questions, but
- 39:57I've learned so much and and I really am
- 40:00so happy that for your success and your
- 40:02ability to help so many people because I
- 40:05can easily tell from sitting with you
- 40:08for the past couple of hours that
- 40:10everything you're doing is coming from a
- 40:12great place, but also is truly trying to
- 40:15guide people towards their greatness and
- 40:17their best self and you know, through
- 40:20through all the amazing teachings and
- 40:21studies and research that you've done.
- 40:23So, thank you so much.
- 40:24>> so much.
- 40:25>> Such a joy.
- 40:26We end every episode of On Purpose with
- 40:28a final five.
- 40:29>> Yes.
- 40:29>> These questions have to be answered in
- 40:30one word or one sentence maximum.
- 40:32>> Okay.
- 40:33>> You have a sentence. [laughter]
- 40:34You have a sentence.
- 40:35>> Okay.
- 40:35>> Uh so, Chani Nicholas, these are your
- 40:37final five. The first question is, what
- 40:39is the best advice you've ever heard or
- 40:42received?
- 40:43>> If you choose it,
- 40:45do not feel sorry for yourself about it.
- 40:49Your agency is your greatest gift and
- 40:51your greatest power. The moment you feel
- 40:54sorry for yourself,
- 40:55you
- 40:57decouple yourself. You do yourself the
- 40:59greatest disservice.
- 41:01If you choose it,
- 41:03do not feel sorry for yourself about
- 41:04what it takes to make it happen.
- 41:07You can unchoose it,
- 41:08>> [snorts]
- 41:08>> but if you're choosing it,
- 41:10this is what it is.
- 41:11Do you still want it?
- 41:12>> Such a great answer. I love that.
- 41:14>> So many questions. So many questions.
- 41:15>> that was great. That was great. I love
- 41:16it.
- 41:17>> [laughter]
- 41:17>> Second question, what is the worst
- 41:18advice you've ever heard or received?
- 41:21>> Someone telling me they didn't know how
- 41:23I was ever going to find love.
- 41:24>> Mhm.
- 41:25>> I don't know if that's advice, but yeah.
- 41:27>> Um question number four,
- 41:30what's a misconception about astrology
- 41:33that you'd like to debunk?
- 41:36>> That there are certain signs that are
- 41:39good or bad.
- 41:40>> They're all bad.
- 41:42>> [laughter]
- 41:42>> Yes, THEY'RE ALL PROBLEMATIC.
- 41:47>> EXPLAIN. [laughter]
- 41:48WHICH ONE'S THE RIGHT ANSWER?
- 41:49>> WELL, everyone every single sign is an
- 41:52archetype. So, the archetype is both has
- 41:56qualities of both like magnificence and
- 41:59horror because they're reflective of us.
- 42:03So, everyone's a problematic fave.
- 42:05>> [laughter]
- 42:06>> Uh fifth and final question. We ask this
- 42:08to every guest who's ever been on the
- 42:09show. If you could create one law that
- 42:12everyone in the world had to follow,
- 42:14what would it be?
- 42:15>> I've listened to a lot of your episodes,
- 42:17but I don't remember this question.
- 42:18>> Oh, it's always last.
- 42:19>> Okay.
- 42:20>> Fair.
- 42:20>> Cuz I haven't finished it.
- 42:21>> living Yeah, exactly. [laughter]
- 42:23That's what I'm learning, Shani.
- 42:24>> Yeah.
- 42:26The law is that everybody's child is
- 42:29yours.
- 42:30>> Mhm.
- 42:31I love that answer. That's a great
- 42:33answer. Never had that before. That's
- 42:35brilliant.
- 42:35>> Mhm.
- 42:36>> If this clip brought you value and you'd
