- 0:04Welcome to this uh session on your
- 0:07assignment two which is called an
- 0:09unknown natural language sometimes
- 0:12abbreviated to UNL
- 0:15and you will see that you have this
- 0:19section in your Google classroom. Um, by
- 0:22the time you have reached this
- 0:24assignment, you will have already
- 0:25completed assignment one and all of the
- 0:27tasks that go with that. Um, please make
- 0:30sure that you have completed all of
- 0:31those things in the Google Classroom
- 0:34prior to assignment two um before you
- 0:38kick off with this assignment. So, what
- 0:40I'd like to do is just briefly go
- 0:43through the expectations of the
- 0:45assignment and where you can find all
- 0:47the information. So as you will see you
- 0:50are here in Google uh classroom with uh
- 0:53the assignment two. So what you'll find
- 0:56in assignment two is the information
- 0:59here that explains in the Google
- 1:01classroom. You've got the brief here
- 1:04which you are watching on this video but
- 1:06you also have the brief as a PDF which
- 1:08you can go and access at any time as
- 1:11well as a copy of this video. You will
- 1:13have the content guide here uh to tell
- 1:15you how to complete the assignment.
- 1:18Further down here, you will have a video
- 1:21recording of a Romanian class uh with a
- 1:25group of A1 students learning Romanian.
- 1:27That will be the uh unknown natural
- 1:30language. Um and you will have the
- 1:32template assignment too as well. So,
- 1:35you'll be able to find the assignment
- 1:37here and I'll show you that um a little
- 1:38bit later on. Um, as always, once you've
- 1:42watched all the classes and you've done
- 1:43all the things in the in the brief, um,
- 1:46you're able to actually go and do the
- 1:48assignment itself. So, I'm going to
- 1:50select now the brief and talk you
- 1:53through a bit more about this, uh,
- 1:56assignment, this unknown natural
- 1:57language assignment.
- 1:59So, the purpose of this assignment is to
- 2:02help you understand how your lower level
- 2:05students feel during a class. In other
- 2:08words, uh the frustrations that they
- 2:10might have, the difficulties they might
- 2:12have, but also the enjoyment that they
- 2:14might have of learning another language.
- 2:17Um and also for you to think about um
- 2:19and understand what a lowlevel class
- 2:21would look like in terms of structure
- 2:24and skills. and you'll be able to assess
- 2:27how well you can master the PPP method
- 2:30and how well you can understand the
- 2:32terminology we have covered so far in
- 2:35terms of PPP and putting that into a
- 2:39clear lesson plan. So that's what's
- 2:41coming up in the assignment itself.
- 2:44Now let's just take a a moment to think
- 2:47about what it is like to be a learner of
- 2:51a language at a complete beginner level.
- 2:53Now maybe you have been uh in this
- 2:55situation yourself. Perhaps you have
- 2:57already learned some Spanish and started
- 3:00at uh A0 A1 level. Maybe that's the case
- 3:04for French. Um who knows what languages
- 3:07you've been learning. We we'll look
- 3:09forward to hearing about those when
- 3:10you're here. Um but what do we know
- 3:13about a beginner level student? Well,
- 3:15basically they have no previous uh
- 3:17understanding, no previous history, and
- 3:20no previous study of the language. Um
- 3:23maybe they know a few words. Uh I
- 3:26certainly came to live in Madrid with a
- 3:28few useful words like uh ordering a
- 3:31beer. Um so the occasional phrase
- 3:34perhaps they know but in general they
- 3:36they have no understanding of how the
- 3:38language uh is put together. Quite often
- 3:41students at this level um and I
- 3:43certainly remember this myself can get
- 3:45very frustrated
- 3:47um talking or trying to learn a a new
- 3:50language and not being able to speak the
- 3:53language um fluently, not being able to
- 3:56communicate. Um it's very frustrating.
- 4:00Um, and you have to really help the
- 4:03students as the teacher um, get past
- 4:05some of those frustrations and enjoy
- 4:07learning the language. Quite often in a
- 4:11class where you have a group of A1
- 4:13students who do not know the language
- 4:15and you are teaching them, they're going
- 4:16to be confused. Okay? There's no doubt
- 4:19that's going to happen. Um, you are just
- 4:21going to set your class up to be the
- 4:24best that it can be to support your
- 4:26students learning it. But just accept uh
- 4:29that they're going to be confused. Um it
- 4:31will take a lot of patience and a lot of
- 4:33time um and a lot of effort from both
- 4:35you and the students to to learn the
- 4:38language at this level. So it's really
- 4:41important to keep your students engaged
- 4:43from the outset. Um that means that they
- 4:46haven't got time to be frustrated. They
- 4:48haven't got time to be confused. You
- 4:50just want them to be uh listening
- 4:52attentively and trying to understand
- 4:54what's going on and and enjoying the
- 4:56process.
- 4:58With low-level students, we still use
- 5:00the PPP methodology, which by now you
- 5:03will already have seen and be
- 5:05understanding really clearly, but there
- 5:07will be a few minor changes, okay?
- 5:10Because remember, they can't hold down a
- 5:12conversation. They can't understand the
- 5:15questions you're asking if you want to
- 5:17have a conversation with them. And many
- 5:19times we do questions and um and a
- 5:22conversation at the point of uh opening
- 5:25the the actual class uh in the
- 5:28presentation section. So we have to
- 5:30remember that that's not going to be
- 5:32possible. So we're going to have a look
- 5:33at different ways that we can do that.
- 5:36Now gestures, minds, praise, all of
- 5:39these things by the teacher, by you as
- 5:41the teacher is going to be absolutely
- 5:43essential. you are going to have to
- 5:46really use your body language, use um
- 5:50extra smiles, extra encouragement
- 5:52physically, verbally, uh clapping hands,
- 5:56thumbs up, um well done, all of these
- 6:00things you're really going to have to
- 6:01exaggerate so that people know what's
- 6:03going on. And your model examples, which
- 6:07you all know now when you're instructing
- 6:09um and modeling things, uh how important
- 6:12it is to do that. And it's going to be
- 6:14super super super important for your A1
- 6:16students. They're going to need to see
- 6:19what they need to do as well as listen
- 6:22mostly because they won't understand
- 6:23what you're saying, but they will be
- 6:25able to make connections with visual
- 6:28things. Okay? So take that in mind as we
- 6:31go through this uh this assignment. Um
- 6:35and let me talk you through what you're
- 6:37going to be doing. So, you're basically
- 6:39going to observe a recorded class um of
- 6:42students learning Romanian. The students
- 6:44are A1 learners, which means they have
- 6:47never spoken Romanian before.
- 6:51The class is 100% in Romanian. So, the
- 6:54teacher uses the PPP methodology to help
- 6:57them learn some basic language skills
- 6:59and gets them participating in the
- 7:01language right from the beginning of the
- 7:04class to the end of the class. Now,
- 7:06whilst you watch the model class, I
- 7:09suggest you use the same note
- 7:10takingaking sheets from your assignment
- 7:12one um that you would have been using to
- 7:14make notes on the other model classes
- 7:16and make notes on this class and see how
- 7:19it is being taught. You can find that
- 7:21things aren't exactly the same as an A2
- 7:24to class uh sorry A2 to C1 class such as
- 7:27the elicitation and gist questions, but
- 7:29you should be able to follow the
- 7:31process. Now, just remember the class is
- 7:34in Romanian. So, we don't expect you to
- 7:37understand it unless by some amazing
- 7:40chance you speak Romanian. Um, so you
- 7:43are watching for clues. You are watching
- 7:45for the process and you are watching for
- 7:48things like model examples, how the
- 7:51teacher minds gestures and gets them
- 7:56speaking and and participating.
- 7:59Now also make notes therefore about how
- 8:01things are different as you'll need to
- 8:02consider those as part of your
- 8:04assignment.
- 8:06So the assignment is made up of four
- 8:08parts as follows. An autobiography
- 8:11aspects of the recorded Romanian class
- 8:14that you'll observe the front page of an
- 8:16A1 lesson plan and the actual A1 student
- 8:19lesson plan and the procedures that you
- 8:21will follow.
- 8:23So this assignment is due to be
- 8:25submitted once you have completed all
- 8:27the videos and tasks in the Google
- 8:30classroom up to this section and you
- 8:31must have completed assignment one
- 8:33beforehand. You will complete the
- 8:35templates and grading criteria to ensure
- 8:38that you complete the assignment
- 8:40correctly and receive a pass grade which
- 8:43can be found in your Google classroom in
- 8:46this section. There is no model example
- 8:49for this assignment. So, make sure to
- 8:51read the grading criteria before you
- 8:53start so that you know exactly what to
- 8:54expect.
- 8:56Each part of the assignment will be
- 8:58graded and you will need to pass each
- 9:00section to receive an overall pass for
- 9:02the assignment. If you're unable to pass
- 9:05a specific section, we will require you
- 9:07to resubmit it until you receive the
- 9:09pass grade.
- 9:12Okay? So this information um is
- 9:16available to you to reread in the
- 9:18assignment and I'm going to talk you
- 9:20through now the grading criteria uh to
- 9:22show you a bit more about this
- 9:24particular part of the assignment.
- 9:30So with the grading criteria it tells
- 9:32you exactly what you need to do.
- 9:34Obviously you need to watch the video
- 9:36the remaining class video before
- 9:38anything. Now, here are your two
- 9:41sections, sorry, your two parts and your
- 9:43four sections. Okay, so here is your
- 9:46autobiography. You will need to reflect
- 9:48on at least one of your own learning
- 9:50experiences of a foreign language.
- 9:52Explain why that experience was
- 9:54productive or non-productive towards
- 9:56your learning the language and give at
- 9:58least one example to back up your
- 10:00opinion. Um, if you have never studied
- 10:04or officially learned a sack language,
- 10:05you can think about the UNL class as an
- 10:08example.
- 10:11Section two, where uh aspects of the
- 10:14recorded UNL class you observed. So,
- 10:16where applicable, constructively
- 10:18criticize aspects of the lesson that you
- 10:20thought could be improved and suggest
- 10:22alternative approaches. comment on at
- 10:25least two teaching techniques or
- 10:27behaviors that you have observed and
- 10:29would plan to incorporate into your
- 10:30teaching practices and beyond. And then
- 10:33we move to part two which is basically
- 10:35creating an A1 lesson plan. You will
- 10:38need to create the lesson plan
- 10:40completing the front page um as you
- 10:43would have seen in the other lesson
- 10:44plans in the other classes and complete
- 10:46all of the boxes according to
- 10:48expectations of an A1 group class. And
- 10:52then for this section two, you'll need
- 10:55to complete the lesson plan itself. So
- 10:58you must create a lesson plan suitable
- 11:00for a group of A1 students who are
- 11:02learning English. So now you need to put
- 11:05yourself in the shoes of the students
- 11:08learning English. Remember, think about
- 11:11the confusion, think about the
- 11:12frustration, think about the fact that
- 11:15they don't know anything. Um they won't
- 11:17be able to hold down a conversation with
- 11:19you. Okay. And then use the ideas and
- 11:23think about the model class, the
- 11:25Romanian model class and the content
- 11:27that was in there. And then you need to
- 11:30detail the procedure of your class. So
- 11:33think about all of the different
- 11:34terminology that you've been learning.
- 11:37Making sure there are instructions in
- 11:39there, there are model examples that you
- 11:41remember to monitor. So, you're creating
- 11:43a lesson plan here from zero to create
- 11:48uh sorry to deliver a class to an A1
- 11:51group of students using all of the
- 11:53procedures and all of the terminology
- 11:55that we've talked about so far. You'll
- 11:58clearly differentiate the stages in the
- 12:00lesson pertaining to PPP.
- 12:03You'll um state the timing for each
- 12:06stage. You'll use student interactions
- 12:08and you'll mention materials. And you
- 12:11should use the experience of observing
- 12:12the UNL class to consider content and
- 12:15activities. Now the important thing is
- 12:17however you must not copy the activities
- 12:21that you have seen in the Romanian class
- 12:23UNL. You will see that there is a copy
- 12:26of the lesson plan in English with the
- 12:29Romanian class. Okay? But you cannot
- 12:32copy that lesson plan. This is very
- 12:35important. Okay? You have to create your
- 12:36own lesson plan and content.
- 12:40So for the rest of the activity you will
- 12:42see the uh the Romanian class will be
- 12:45here for you to watch and then your
- 12:48actual assignments document will be
- 12:51here. Now please remember when you go to
- 12:53view assignments it is much better to go
- 12:56to the view assignments in order to be
- 12:58able to access the document here. So for
- 13:02example here you will see under your
- 13:05work a link straight to the template for
- 13:09you to complete. Now you will have
- 13:11already completed assignment one. So I'm
- 13:12sure you understand how this works. Once
- 13:14you open the document uh it is
- 13:17immediately um editable and when you
- 13:20come back to um complete the assignment
- 13:23you just type in sorry you just click on
- 13:26hand in and it will automatically send
- 13:29us your edited document. You do not need
- 13:32to upload anything, download anything or
- 13:34save anything as a PDF. You just need to
- 13:37go to the document, edit it, and when
- 13:40you finished editing, come back to the
- 13:42classroom and press hand in.
- 13:45Okay, I'll just do that for you here so
- 13:47you can see. You'll go to the document
- 13:49and here it will open up for you and you
- 13:53will see the grading criteria and the
- 13:55sections automatically
- 13:57um
- 13:59are shown as per the grading criteria uh
- 14:02that we've talked to you about in the
- 14:03different sections. And here's the
- 14:06lesson plan that you will complete.
- 14:11And that's it guys. So um please do get
- 14:14in contact if you have any questions.
- 14:16Um, but first of all, read all the
- 14:19information, read the brief, read the
- 14:21content guide, look at the assignment,
- 14:23and most importantly, watch the video,
- 14:25and then you will be in a better place
- 14:27to be able to complete the assignment.
- 14:30We look forward to receiving it soon.
- 14:32Take care.
