- 0:07Today, I would like to share a message
- 0:09about the second angel's message among
- 0:11the three angels 'messages. When I
- 0:16preached about the first angel's
- 0:17message last time, I wasn't feeling
- 0:19very well. Later, when I listened back
- 0:24to it, I realized there was a mistake.
- 0:29I randomly said that the war William
- 0:31Miller participated in before his
- 0:33conversion was World War I. Yes. But in
- 0:40fact, it was the War of 1812. I would
- 0:44like to correct that. World War I
- 0:47happened in 1914, which was much later.
- 0:53Now, let's read the second angel's
- 0:55message together while looking at the
- 0:57screen. Begin. "And another angel
- 1:03followed, saying,' Babylon is fallen,
- 1:06is fallen, '""is fallen,""' that great
- 1:08city, because she has made all nations
- 1:10drink of the wine of the wrath of her
- 1:12fornication. '" The three angels'
- 1:24messages symbolically represent the
- 1:26work of our Seventh-day Adventist
- 1:28Church in proclaiming its core
- 1:30doctrines to the whole world. As I
- 1:37mentioned last time, the core of the
- 1:39first angel's message is that the hour
- 1:41of God's judgment has come. In other
- 1:45words, the time for Jesus 'second
- 1:47coming has arrived. It is a
- 1:50proclamation of the Advent. Then
- 1:54another angel appears, and that angel
- 1:56is the second angel. The phrase "
- 2:01followed" means following behind the
- 2:03first angel. The word for "followed" is
- 2:11"akoloutheō" in Greek, which means to
- 2:13accompany or to follow. So,
- 2:21chronologically, the second angel
- 2:23follows the first, but it doesn't mean
- 2:25the second message is preached only
- 2:27after the first one ends; they are
- 2:29preached together. This is what it
- 2:35means. It means they join in and follow
- 2:38along with the first angel. That is the
- 2:41meaning. To put it simply, William
- 2:48Miller’s Advent movement spread the
- 2:50first angel's message from 1840 to 1844
- 2:52, and during that period, while the
- 2:54core message of the Advent was still
- 2:57being preached, the message that
- 2:59Babylon had fallen was added later.
- 3:07Then, why did the Advent believers come
- 3:10to preach the message that Babylon had
- 3:12fallen? The reason is that they
- 3:17rejected the first angel's message.
- 3:20What was the first angel's message? It
- 3:23was the message of the Advent.
- 3:25Therefore, by rejecting the message of
- 3:27the second coming, the church had
- 3:29fallen. This is the core of the second
- 3:32angel's message. Then, why was the
- 3:36church that rejected the first angel's
- 3:38message at that time called Babylon?
- 3:42Also, Babylon appears as a very
- 3:44important element in the Book of
- 3:46Revelation. If God has His own city
- 3:49called Jerusalem, Satan has his own
- 3:51city called Babylon. Yes. So, these two
- 3:55cities are symbols of God and Satan.
- 4:00Then, what is the meaning of Babylon?
- 4:03And how can the church become Babylon?
- 4:07Let’s examine this issue. First, God
- 4:12created man and blessed him. And that
- 4:17blessing was: "Be fruitful and multiply
- 4:19and fill the earth." So, to be fruitful
- 4:25and multiply means for us to increase.
- 4:29Yes. That people would gradually
- 4:33increase and bear many children is the
- 4:35most fundamental blessing God gave. And
- 4:40"fill the earth" means to make the
- 4:42earth full. Implicit in this command is
- 4:47the instruction to spread out and live
- 4:49across the whole earth. Therefore, to
- 4:54fill the earth, you cannot all gather
- 4:56in one place. Live scattered across the
- 4:58world. So fill the entire earth. This
- 5:03is what the words imply. Urban areas
- 5:08where the population is densely packed,
- 5:11like the capital region we live in now,
- 5:13were not part of God's original plan.
- 5:18God planned for us to live scattered
- 5:20about. And even after the Great Flood,
- 5:24He said, "Be fruitful and multiply, and
- 5:26fill the earth and teem with life in it
- 5:28." He repeated the exact same blessing.
- 5:32Then, in verse 11, He says, "I
- 5:34establish my covenant with you: Never
- 5:37again will all life be destroyed by the
- 5:39waters of a flood." Now, no matter what
- 5:44situation this world faces, there will
- 5:47be no such massive judgment until the
- 5:49Second Coming. Furthermore, there will
- 5:53never again be a judgment by water.
- 5:56That is the covenant He made. After the
- 6:04flood, Noah and his descendants stayed
- 6:06for a while where the ark came to rest,
- 6:08Mount Ararat; it is here in the
- 6:10Armenian region. If you go there even
- 6:15now, Mount Ararat is there. But there
- 6:18are two peaks, so we don't know exactly
- 6:20which one. We don't know exactly where,
- 6:23but we do know it is in the vicinity of
- 6:25Armenia. Now, Noah's descendants began
- 6:31to multiply and prosper. However, human
- 6:37nature had been corrupted due to the
- 6:40fall. Humans are born with a sinful
- 6:44nature. Therefore, no matter if one is
- 6:49born into a faithful family as a
- 6:51descendant of Abraham, there will
- 6:53always be those among them who do not
- 6:55believe. Sin happens naturally without
- 7:00any effort, but believing in God
- 7:02requires effort; not believing happens
- 7:04automatically without any effort. So,
- 7:09faith is something that, if we don't
- 7:11consciously make an effort, humans will
- 7:14naturally fall into corruption. This is
- 7:21why we attend worship at church, listen
- 7:24to the Word, memorize memory verses,
- 7:26and recite goals every Sabbath; it is
- 7:28because if left alone, we inevitably
- 7:31grow distant from God and closer to the
- 7:33world, living a sinful life, so these
- 7:35are means to consciously lead us back
- 7:38to God. Those who disliked faith and
- 7:50God began to frequently clash with
- 7:51people of faith. So, these people left
- 7:59Mount Ararat and began to move toward
- 8:01the East. The word for "moved" here is
- 8:06"nasa" in Hebrew. "Nasa" means to pull
- 8:12up stakes or take down tents. That is
- 8:16its meaning. So, looking at that Hebrew
- 8:20verb, we can tell that the people at
- 8:22the time lived a nomadic life at first.
- 8:26It wasn't easy to farm or establish a
- 8:28permanent settlement. Thus, we can see
- 8:31that they lived a nomadic life, raising
- 8:34animals to use as food. Since those
- 8:41living a nomadic life found that
- 8:42mountainous regions were not suitable
- 8:44for raising animals. They began to move
- 8:51further downward; although the Bible
- 8:53says "East," if you look at a map,
- 8:55Shinar is this way. The Euphrates and
- 9:01Tigris rivers flow here, and the land
- 9:03between them is the Plain of Shinar,
- 9:05which became fertile as floods carried
- 9:08various sediments. So, it provided an
- 9:13excellent environment for raising
- 9:15animals. They found the Plain of Shinar
- 9:20, built a city there, and began a
- 9:22settled life. This Plain of Shinar is
- 9:25almost entirely the region of
- 9:26modern-day Iraq. The person known for
- 9:30building the Tower of Babel on that
- 9:32plain is Nimrod. Nimrod was the
- 9:36great-grandson of Noah. Noah had three
- 9:41sons; among them, Ham's son was Cush,
- 9:43and Cush's son was Nimrod. Speaking of
- 9:51Nimrod, verse 10 says his kingdom began
- 9:53in Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh in
- 9:56the land of Shinar. A "kingdom" is
- 10:03mentioned here. A kingdom. So, Nimrod
- 10:08was the first person to establish a
- 10:10city-state on the Plain of Shinar. And
- 10:16judging by the various circumstances,
- 10:18it is highly likely that the
- 10:20civilization Nimrod established was the
- 10:22Mesopotamian civilization. Among the
- 10:27four great civilizations of humanity,
- 10:30the Mesopotamian civilization is the
- 10:32first. They used writing, yes. So,
- 10:37these people are the Sumerians. The
- 10:42fact that he established "his kingdom"
- 10:44shows that Nimrod began the first
- 10:46monarchical politics or monarchical
- 10:48rule. Before that, there were no kings,
- 10:53and villages were ruled and governed by
- 10:56the decisions of elders—that is, the
- 10:58older patriarchs in the town. But
- 11:04Nimrod became the first one to make
- 11:05himself a king. So, one could say that
- 11:11Nimrod was the founder of imperialism.
- 11:16He built an empire himself and became a
- 11:18king. And he originally named that
- 11:22place "Bab-ilu." Bab-ilu. Before the
- 11:29term "Babel" was used, "Bab-ilu" meant
- 11:32"gate of God." What this means is that
- 11:37the king of Babylon, or Babylonia,
- 11:39ruled the nation under divine command.
- 11:44In other words, this is the divine
- 11:46right of kings. Is that correct? Yes.
- 11:50This divine authority—excuse me, I
- 11:52misspoke; I meant the divine right of
- 11:55kings. To show that the royal authority
- 11:59is received from God, they named the
- 12:01country "Bab-ilu," meaning "gate of God
- 12:03." This is how they named the nation.
- 12:09And they made a plan like this. They
- 12:15said, "Come, let us build ourselves a
- 12:17city and a tower," and the reason for
- 12:19building the tower was "with its top in
- 12:21the heavens." Why did they want to
- 12:28build such a high tower? They were all
- 12:32aware of the Noahic flood. Even though
- 12:36God said He would never again destroy
- 12:38the world with water, they couldn't
- 12:40trust it. If such a flood were to
- 12:45happen again, they would build a tower
- 12:47higher than the areas that were
- 12:49submerged so they could save themselves
- 12:51and take refuge there. Therefore, this
- 12:55is a distrust of God's covenant. Second
- 12:59, "let us make a name for ourselves."
- 13:03Do you know what the first angel's
- 13:04message is? It is to fear God and give
- 13:08Him glory. So this is theocentric. It
- 13:13means to live with God at the center.
- 13:15But they said, "Let us make a name for
- 13:17ourselves." This is humanism. God's
- 13:21existence fades away, and they ask, "
- 13:23Why did the flood happen?" It wasn't
- 13:25God's judgment, but rather
- 13:26scientifically, it rained a lot and
- 13:28this and that happened, causing the
- 13:30flood. They interpret it in this way
- 13:31now. There are still many such things
- 13:34happening today. Next, "lest we be
- 13:37scattered abroad over the face of the
- 13:39whole earth." God wanted them to spread
- 13:41out and live on the whole earth, but
- 13:42they said, "Let us avoid being
- 13:44scattered.""Let us gather and live
- 13:46together." Yes. This is a defiance of
- 13:49God's command. This is the spirit of
- 13:52Babylon. Distrust of God's covenant,
- 13:56humanistic theology, and then rebellion
- 13:59against God's commands. God resolves
- 14:05this apostasy very easily. In Genesis
- 14:0811: 8-9, it says, "So the Lord
- 14:10scattered them abroad from there over
- 14:12the face of all the earth, and they
- 14:15left off building the city." Their
- 14:18plans were frustrated. But how did He
- 14:20frustrate them? "Therefore its name was
- 14:25called Babel, because there the Lord
- 14:26confused the language of all the earth.
- 14:28" Up until then, there was only one
- 14:34language, but God changed them into
- 14:36people speaking English, Chinese,
- 14:39French, Korean, and Japanese. To carry
- 14:43out this massive construction, people
- 14:45needed to understand each other, but
- 14:47since they couldn't, they would ask for
- 14:49bricks and get something else instead.
- 14:51So they got frustrated, stopped
- 14:53building the city, and started fighting
- 14:55. Yes. In this way, people who could
- 14:58understand each other gathered together
- 15:00and then scattered. God thwarted human
- 15:05plans by confusing their single
- 15:06language. And just as God had
- 15:11originally intended, people ended up
- 15:13scattering. As I mentioned earlier,
- 15:18humans possess a sinful nature due to
- 15:20the Fall, so we have no immunity
- 15:22against sin. Therefore, when the virus
- 15:28called sin enters, humans are bound to
- 15:30catch it. Since there is no immunity,
- 15:38the more people gather and live
- 15:40together, the faster sin inevitably
- 15:42spreads. That is why God had them live
- 15:48scattered, to be less influenced by sin
- 15:50. But today, humans have built not a
- 15:55vertical Tower of Babel, but a
- 15:57horizontal one; what is it? It is the
- 16:03internet. So now, whether it is the
- 16:07city or the countryside—though the
- 16:09countryside is still a bit better—
- 16:13there is not much difference. Even if I
- 16:17go to the countryside, like Jeju Island
- 16:19or somewhere deep in the mountains like
- 16:21Jeongseon or Yeongwol, people recognize
- 16:23me and are so happy to see me, even
- 16:25though I've never met them before. So
- 16:30when I ask, "Deacon, when did you meet
- 16:32me?" and ask like that, thinking
- 16:34perhaps I don't remember,
- 16:36they say, "Oh, Pastor, this is our
- 16:38first time meeting, too.""I’ve
- 16:40watched you on YouTube so much that you
- 16:42feel just like my own senior pastor."
- 16:44That is what they say. Even people over
- 16:4770 or 80 years old say that. This means
- 16:52that we hear the same news in the
- 16:53provinces on the same day as we do in
- 16:55Seoul. We even hear it in the United
- 16:59States. Sometimes I even get calls from
- 17:01the U.S. Yes. I also get them from
- 17:03Canada and Australia. So now, the whole
- 17:08world is called a global village, right
- 17:11? That is how quickly sin spreads as
- 17:16well. But when Paul spread the gospel,
- 17:21Rome had built many roads to govern the
- 17:23countries they conquered, right? That
- 17:26is why they said all roads lead to Rome
- 17:28. Instead of saying he wouldn't use the
- 17:33roads made by Rome—a secular
- 17:35government—and climbing over
- 17:36mountains, he used the roads Rome paved
- 17:39to rule their empire to spread the
- 17:41gospel at high speed. So, we must also
- 17:45conquer the internet.
- 17:47Yes. Although the internet is filled
- 17:50with all kinds of bad material, we must
- 17:52constantly upload good content so that
- 17:54in the place where so many people
- 17:56gather, they can encounter our gospel.
- 18:02Ah, as I mentioned earlier, the
- 18:04Babylonians called it "Bab-ilu," the
- 18:07gate of God, but the Hebrews used
- 18:09wordplay. They apply words that sound
- 18:15similar; there is a word in Hebrew
- 18:17called "balal." This word "balal" means
- 18:23to confuse, and as it was said, God
- 18:26confused the language. He caused
- 18:29confusion, as it were. So they liked to
- 18:33call this place Babel. Yes. They called
- 18:37it Babel as another nickname. They said
- 18:40Babilu, but it is Babel. It is
- 18:42confusion. Calling it this way, we are
- 18:46now using the term Babylon. Then, what
- 18:50does this Babylon mean in Revelation?
- 18:56According to Bible commentaries, as
- 18:58used in Revelation, this name is a
- 19:00symbol for all apostate religious
- 19:02organizations or their leaders from
- 19:04ancient times to the end. Please keep
- 19:09this in mind. When Babylon appears in
- 19:13the Book of Revelation, it is a term
- 19:15that symbolizes an apostate religious
- 19:17organization or its leader. It is used
- 19:21this way. Now, let's go back to the
- 19:24second angel's message. The second
- 19:29angel here repeats twice that Babylon
- 19:31has fallen. Fallen, Fallen is Babylon
- 19:35the great. That is what it says. In the
- 19:39Bible, saying something twice or three
- 19:41times means to emphasize it. Babylon
- 19:44has completely fallen. Everyone, what
- 19:48should you do if a house is collapsing?
- 19:51You shouldn't stay there, but leave the
- 19:53building immediately. So, emphasizing
- 19:56the fall is an emphasis on coming out
- 19:58of there. Yes. Then why did the church
- 20:04become Babylon and fall? What did it
- 20:08say here? Because of her fornication.
- 20:11This "fornication" refers to a
- 20:16relationship that is not legitimate. In
- 20:22other words, the church should obey God
- 20:24, but the Book of Revelation describes
- 20:26joining hands with the world or the
- 20:28government instead of God as
- 20:29fornication. And she made them drink
- 20:36the wine of her wrath. That is what it
- 20:39said. Here, the "wine of her wrath"
- 20:43refers to the false doctrines and false
- 20:45policies of Babylon. "Making them drink
- 20:50" means forcing or imposing false
- 20:52doctrines. It has that meaning. I will
- 20:55talk about this in more detail when I
- 20:57cover the third angel's message. The
- 20:59time when the second angel's message is
- 21:01proclaimed is the point where this
- 21:03collapse begins. It is not that the
- 21:06collapse is complete, but because it is
- 21:08falling, such issues will be revealed
- 21:10more clearly in the third angel's
- 21:12message, and here it shows how the
- 21:14collapse begins. According to Bible
- 21:20commentaries, we should view this
- 21:22collapse as gradual and progressive. So
- 21:27it doesn't just collapse and end
- 21:29suddenly, but it continues to collapse
- 21:31more and more as time goes by. And the
- 21:36degree of its wickedness or corruption
- 21:38is progressive here. This means it
- 21:41becomes more severe. The apostasy at
- 21:43this time is nothing. As time goes on,
- 21:46it will get worse. That is what it
- 21:48means. This prophecy regarding the fall
- 21:51of Babylon finds its eschatological
- 21:53fulfillment in the fact that most
- 21:55Protestant churches are departing from
- 21:57the purity and simplicity of the gospel
- 21:59. This means that this will happen in
- 22:02the last days. However, the beginning
- 22:07of this movement dates back to the
- 22:091840s, when William Miller was sharing
- 22:11his message. Now, let's take a closer
- 22:17look at how these events actually
- 22:19unfolded at that time. The reason
- 22:23William Miller began the Advent
- 22:26movement was due to Daniel 8:14. He
- 22:30said to me, "It will take 2,300
- 22:32evenings and mornings; then the
- 22:34sanctuary will be cleansed." The 2,300
- 22:39evenings and mornings, by literal count
- 22:42, means 2,300 days and nights. So, it
- 22:45is 2,300 days. However, in biblical
- 22:50prophecy, one day should actually be
- 22:53interpreted as one year. This is called
- 22:56the year-day principle. Yes. Therefore,
- 22:592,300 evenings and mornings become
- 23:022,300 years; although Daniel spoke of
- 23:04these 2,300 days in Daniel chapter 8,
- 23:07he could not fully understand them. So,
- 23:10when Daniel was fasting and praying in
- 23:13chapter 9, the angel Gabriel appeared
- 23:15to him. He said, "I have come to give
- 23:17you insight into the prophecy regarding
- 23:19the days you did not understand." He
- 23:23then stated that for the sake of the
- 23:25people Daniel was so worried about—
- 23:28his people and the holy city—God had
- 23:30decreed seventy "sevens." That is,
- 23:34seventy weeks. It means seventy sets of
- 23:37seven. Then, how many days is that
- 23:39actually? 70 times 7 is 490 days. So,
- 23:44for the Jewish nation, God had decreed
- 23:47490 years. And the word "decreed" here
- 23:52means "cut off." Therefore, out of the
- 23:552,300 days, The first 490 years from
- 23:59the beginning were set aside
- 24:01specifically for the people of Israel.
- 24:04That is the meaning. I don't have time
- 24:11to explain everything, but the angel
- 24:13Gabriel said that the starting point
- 24:15for these 2,300 days, or the 490 years,
- 24:18should be calculated from the decree to
- 24:20restore and rebuild Jerusalem. If you
- 24:28look into history, there were three
- 24:31such decrees, but the one that fully
- 24:33restored the administration of
- 24:36Jerusalem was issued in 457 B.C. So, if
- 24:38you subtract 457 years from the 2,300
- 24:41years of the 2,300-day prophecy, what
- 24:44year do you get? 1843. In 1843, The
- 24:53sanctuary will be cleansed. This is the
- 24:56meaning. Now, we have figured out the
- 25:00end of the 2,300 days. Then, what does
- 25:03it mean for the sanctuary to be
- 25:05cleansed? Martin Luther goes back to
- 25:09Daniel chapter 8, and looking from
- 25:11verse 9, it says "out of one of them
- 25:14came a horn," but this is a bit of an
- 25:16interpretive entanglement. It is a
- 25:19rather difficult part. After Alexander
- 25:24died, the kingdom split into four parts
- 25:26. Those are the four horns. However, in
- 25:33verse 9, it says "out of one of them,"
- 25:35and the word used here for "them" is in
- 25:38the masculine form. Whereas the word
- 25:42for "horn" is in the feminine form.
- 25:45Therefore, it does not refer to the
- 25:47horn in verse 8. It says "out of one of
- 25:52them," but it doesn't mean out of one
- 25:54horn; it means from one of the four
- 25:56directions of heaven or from one of the
- 25:58four winds of heaven. So, it does not
- 26:03mean it comes out of a horn. Because
- 26:06Rome did not come out of any horn of
- 26:08Greece. Also, it is translated here as
- 26:14"out of one horn," but in reality, it
- 26:17just means "one." There are four
- 26:20directions: east, west, north, and
- 26:23south. It says a little horn came out
- 26:27from one of those four directions.
- 26:31However, when looking for this little
- 26:33horn in history, it links pagan Rome
- 26:35and papal Rome together. First,
- 26:39imperial Rome appeared, and after the
- 26:42fall of Rome, papal Rome succeeded it.
- 26:48It is said that this Rome grew toward
- 26:50the south, the east, and the Beautiful
- 26:53Land; here, the south is Egypt, the
- 26:55east is the Seleucid Empire, and the
- 26:57Beautiful Land is Palestine. Therefore,
- 27:05taking this as a whole, because the
- 27:07little horn includes not only pagan
- 27:09Rome but also papal Rome, it is
- 27:11problematic to limit the sanctuary that
- 27:13will be cleansed only to the Jewish
- 27:15sanctuary in Jerusalem. If so, Miller
- 27:24concludes that the sanctuary to be
- 27:27cleansed in Daniel 8:14 refers to the
- 27:29Church. Then, how can the Church be
- 27:35cleansed? The Church can be cleansed
- 27:41when Jesus comes to burn up the wicked.
- 27:45Therefore, the cleansing of the
- 27:47sanctuary means that Jesus will return.
- 27:50This is how he interprets it. Thus, the
- 27:53Advent movement began. Originally,
- 27:59before 1840, William Miller held
- 28:01meetings alone, visiting small churches
- 28:04in New England and its northern regions
- 28:06. In private. Then, in 1839, in
- 28:18November, pastors of the Christian
- 28:19Connection held a conference in Exeter,
- 28:22New Hampshire. At that time, a pastor
- 28:28named Joshua Himes was the minister of
- 28:30the First Christian Church. He attended
- 28:35this meeting and met William Miller. At
- 28:38first, he did not really believe in the
- 28:41date of the Advent Miller was preaching
- 28:42. However, a few months later, after
- 28:46attending William Miller's meeting and
- 28:48hearing him in person, he was deeply
- 28:50moved, realizing that this was
- 28:52happening around 1839 or 1840. It was
- 28:56around 1840. So, how much time was left
- 28:59until '43? Only three years remained.
- 29:04Himes thought, "With only three years
- 29:06left, how are we going to preach this
- 29:09gospel to the whole world?" So he
- 29:16personally jumped into the Advent
- 29:18movement to plan and promote it, as
- 29:20Himes was a first-class organizer,
- 29:22manager, and financier. So, by
- 29:30organizing meetings in major cities
- 29:33like Boston, New York, Philadelphia,
- 29:35and Washington, the regional revival
- 29:37movement that began in New England
- 29:39started to develop into a nationwide
- 29:42advent movement. This Himes was a man
- 29:50who was also very skilled at modern
- 29:52public relations. So, in 1840, he
- 29:58created the first Millerite newspaper
- 30:01in Boston, "Signs of the Times"—the
- 30:03same magazine that is currently
- 30:05published in Korea under the name "Sijo
- 30:08." He was the first to create this
- 30:13magazine, "Signs of the Times." Back
- 30:17then, it was published bi-weekly, and
- 30:20while the first issue had 1,500 readers
- 30:23, in less than two years, it reached
- 30:255,000; selling 5,000 copies meant that
- 30:28the actual readership was around 50,000
- 30:31. After all, families would share it
- 30:33and pass it around. So, considering the
- 30:35U.S. population at the time, this was
- 30:37an immense influence in terms of
- 30:39publicity. Besides that, he created
- 30:41several other magazines as well. Yes.
- 30:44So, he shook up the entire United
- 30:46States, but later, as more and more
- 30:48people joined, they couldn't find
- 30:50venues large enough as they toured the
- 30:52country. At first, they built a tent
- 30:58that could hold 4,000 people, but as
- 31:00even more came, they later built a tent
- 31:03for over 6,000 to hold meetings, making
- 31:05these adventist camp meetings a trend
- 31:07for quite some time. That is why we
- 31:13still call them "tent revival meetings"
- 31:15in the summer. But if you go, there are
- 31:17no tents; everyone gathers inside
- 31:19buildings. Because they used to hold
- 31:21actual camp meetings in the past, they
- 31:22just kept the name. Yes. People had
- 31:27never seen such large tents before. So,
- 31:33many people who came just to see the
- 31:35tents ended up following others inside,
- 31:37listening to Miller's sermons, and
- 31:39accepting the advent message. In this
- 31:45way, the advent movement began to
- 31:47spread like wildfire. Some people keep
- 31:52labeling William Miller's movement as a
- 31:54date-setting apocalyptic cult, but
- 31:56originally, it was not a movement that
- 31:58fixed a specific date for the second
- 32:00coming. While the time was important,
- 32:04what was more important was a spiritual
- 32:06revival movement that helped people
- 32:08prepare for the return of Jesus.
- 32:12That’s why Miller made this movement
- 32:14interdenominational. Although Miller
- 32:17himself was a Baptist pastor, he told
- 32:18people not to just stick to the Baptist
- 32:21church, but to wait for Jesus' return
- 32:22within their own respective churches.
- 32:27As a result of this advent movement,
- 32:29during the single year of 1844, the
- 32:32Methodist church grew by 40,000 members
- 32:34and the Baptist church by 45,000. But
- 32:43the problem was that most Protestant
- 32:45churches at the time believed in
- 32:47post-millennialism. Post-millennialism
- 32:52is the belief that after Pentecost, the
- 32:54gospel spreads worldwide, almost all of
- 32:57humanity converts, leading to a
- 32:59millennium, followed by the Second
- 33:01Coming. Because the Second Coming
- 33:06happens after the millennium, it is
- 33:08called post-millennialism—the
- 33:09millennium comes first, then the Second
- 33:12Coming. That is why it is called
- 33:15post-millennialism. The reason
- 33:18post-millennialism spread within
- 33:20Protestantism is because of the
- 33:21influence of the Enlightenment after
- 33:24the 17th century. The Enlightenment is
- 33:28characterized by an optimistic view of
- 33:30humanity. Because humans are rational
- 33:36beings, they can build a peaceful and
- 33:38good nation on their own. So, by
- 33:45spreading the gospel and having people
- 33:47accept it, a millennium without war,
- 33:49conflict, or heartache comes first.
- 33:55This is post-millennialism. And they
- 34:00claimed the Second Coming was not
- 34:02literal, but a myth. How could Jesus
- 34:06literally come to this earth riding on
- 34:08clouds? That was a myth; they claimed
- 34:13Jesus "returning" was a metaphor for
- 34:15humans becoming enlightened and
- 34:17developing civilization to create a
- 34:19better world. Most churches believed
- 34:24this at the time. It is surprising for
- 34:27us to hear this now. Yes. So when
- 34:33Miller preached that Jesus would
- 34:35actually return in 1843—which was
- 34:37later revised to 1844—and that the
- 34:39millennium would follow, that Jesus
- 34:41would return first and then the
- 34:43millennium of His reign would follow.
- 34:51This idea was extremely radical and
- 34:53shocking to the American people. While
- 35:00it certainly drew a lot of attention,
- 35:03some pastors became concerned as it
- 35:05became a major issue. So, within some
- 35:10churches, they would say, "Do not talk
- 35:12about the Second Coming.""If you talk
- 35:15about the Second Coming again, we will
- 35:17kick you out of the church." They began
- 35:19to impose sanctions like this. Then,
- 35:221843 started to draw closer and closer.
- 35:26Even non-believers probably felt a bit
- 35:28tense as the date approached. We had
- 35:31the rapture incident in Korea back in
- 35:341992, right? Perhaps this feeling
- 35:36exists. Within people. So, uh although
- 35:44the Adventists evangelized more
- 35:46diligently, the church's opposition and
- 35:48suppression grew even stronger. In 1841
- 35:53, mobs broke into assembly halls, and
- 35:57in 1842, those participating in the
- 36:02Adventist movement were sanctioned and
- 36:04prevented from preaching in churches.
- 36:09Then, as 1843 arrived, although Miller
- 36:12opposed setting a specific time, about
- 36:14five different views emerged. Saying He
- 36:17would come on a specific month and day.
- 36:19Yes. Uh. But Miller, too, did not set a
- 36:24date at first. But people kept asking
- 36:26him, "Please, just give us a rough
- 36:28estimate." So Miller set the time a bit
- 36:30broadly. He said it would happen
- 36:33between the spring equinox of March 21,
- 36:361843, and March 21, 1844. But later,
- 36:39this was revised to April 18th. That is
- 36:43because a Jewish rabbi named Karait
- 36:45created a calendar known to be much
- 36:47more accurate, so it was adjusted to
- 36:49April 18th. However, there was also a
- 36:55theory for April 3, 1843. It was
- 36:59believed that Jesus was crucified on
- 37:02April 3, 33 AD. So, if you subtract 33
- 37:05years from 2,300, 1,810 years remain,
- 37:09and an article appeared back then—you
- 37:12can see the newspaper here—suggesting
- 37:15Jesus might return on April 3, 1843,
- 37:18after those 1,810 years had passed. Uh.
- 37:25This article appeared in a newspaper
- 37:26called the New York Herald. Since it
- 37:29was even published in the newspaper, it
- 37:31turned all of America upside down.
- 37:36April 3rd passed by without anything
- 37:38happening. They waited for March 21st,
- 37:43which William Miller had originally
- 37:45mentioned, but that day also passed by.
- 37:49They waited for April 18th as well, but
- 37:52Jesus did not return. Then the
- 37:59Protestant churches completely changed
- 38:01their attitude, and from this point on,
- 38:03they didn't just stop people from
- 38:05preaching the advent message or prevent
- 38:07them from standing in the pulpit; they
- 38:09began to discipline and excommunicate
- 38:11anyone who believed in the advent
- 38:13message or attended the meetings. So,
- 38:20William Miller had no intention of
- 38:22starting a denomination. He wanted to
- 38:26prepare the people for Jesus 'return
- 38:28within their existing churches. But as
- 38:32the churches kept excommunicating
- 38:34people, the people at that time began
- 38:36to wonder, "Is it right for the church
- 38:38to go this far?""It's not like I'm
- 38:42preaching something not in the Bible,
- 38:44and the promise of His return is in the
- 38:46Bible, so isn't it problematic that
- 38:47they won't even let the advent message
- 38:49be shared?" This caused the trust in
- 38:53the church to gradually begin to
- 38:55collapse. Can this even be called a
- 38:58church? Then in 1843, a pastor named
- 39:08Charles Fitch preached a sermon titled
- 39:10"Come Out of Her, My People," based on
- 39:13Revelation 18: 1-5. In this sermon,
- 39:20Pastor Fitch declared that Babylon is
- 39:22the Antichrist. Then what is this
- 39:26Antichrist? The Antichrist refers to
- 39:33those who deny the personal reign of
- 39:35Christ or His literal appearance,
- 39:37instead asserting a spiritual reign and
- 39:39a spiritual second coming of Jesus. So,
- 39:49the Protestant churches at the time
- 39:51already considered Catholicism to be
- 39:53Babylon. Most did, but starting from
- 39:59Charles Fitch's time, the idea began to
- 40:01slowly spread that Protestant churches
- 40:03which rejected the first angel's
- 40:05message and the advent message should
- 40:08also be included as Babylon. Yes. Back
- 40:12then, they just thought of the
- 40:14Protestant church as being like the
- 40:16Laodicean church. Then, starting with
- 40:18this sermon, the concept of considering
- 40:21the mainstream Protestant churches—
- 40:23which opposed the Second Advent message
- 40:25, forbade its preaching, and
- 40:27excommunicated believers—as "Babylon"
- 40:29took hold. So, Fitch said, "If you wish
- 40:35to be found in Christ when He appears,
- 40:37come out of Babylon.""Come out
- 40:42immediately." That was his sermon. Back
- 40:45then, it wasn’t an era where you
- 40:46could rewatch things on YouTube like
- 40:48today. So, people who hadn't heard the
- 40:51sermon wanted to hear it, and it was
- 40:53published as a book and distributed
- 40:55extensively. In The Great Controversy,
- 40:59page 376, it states, "As they saw the
- 41:01testimony of God's Word suppressed and
- 41:04their right to study the prophecies
- 41:06denied, they felt that it was no longer
- 41:09their duty to submit, but to be
- 41:11faithful to God.""They could not regard
- 41:13as constituting the church of Christ,
- 41:15which is the pillar and ground of the
- 41:17truth, those who were seeking to
- 41:19silence the testimony of God's Word."
- 41:22Thus, they felt it was justifiable to
- 41:24leave the churches to which they had
- 41:26originally belonged. In the summer of
- 41:291844, 50,000 members left their various
- 41:32churches. If just five people left the
- 41:37church you attend, how would that be?
- 41:39The church would be turned upside down.
- 41:4150,000 people leaving is an enormous
- 41:43event. So, what on earth happened in
- 41:46the summer of 1844 that caused so many
- 41:49people to suddenly start leaving? Well,
- 41:53this was due to a pastor named Samuel
- 41:56Snow. He was someone who originally did
- 41:58not believe in the Christian faith. But
- 42:02one day in 1839, his brother bought one
- 42:04of Miller’s books from a colporteur
- 42:06selling books on the street and brought
- 42:08it home. After reading that book, he
- 42:11thought, "Ah, the Second Advent must be
- 42:14true." With that thought, he registered
- 42:17at a Congregational church and began
- 42:18attending. He kept talking to people at
- 42:22the church about the Second Advent and
- 42:24asking questions, so they told him to
- 42:26stop. "Don't talk about the Second
- 42:28Advent." That’s what they told him.
- 42:29So, he left that Congregational church.
- 42:32He felt that if they wouldn't let him
- 42:33preach the Second Advent, there was no
- 42:34need for him to attend that church. So,
- 42:37after attending the Millerite tent
- 42:39meeting held in East Kingston, New
- 42:41Hampshire, in 1842, he decided he must
- 42:44preach this message of the Second
- 42:46Advent. He was ordained in December
- 42:511843 and became a Millerite preacher.
- 42:58Through his study of the Bible, he
- 42:59discovered the typological significance
- 43:02of the feasts. He published this in a
- 43:10newspaper called "The Midnight Cry,"
- 43:12explaining that Israel had spring and
- 43:14autumn feasts, and the spring feasts
- 43:16were types of the first advent of Jesus
- 43:18. So, Jesus was crucified on the day of
- 43:23Passover, which is when He died as the
- 43:26Passover Lamb. Then, on the 15th of the
- 43:28first month, the day of Unleavened
- 43:30Bread, He was in the tomb; on the 16th,
- 43:33the day of Firstfruits, He rose as the
- 43:35first fruits; and 50 days later, on the
- 43:376th of the third month, the Holy Spirit
- 43:39descended. Therefore, all the spring
- 43:41feasts are related to Jesus' first
- 43:43coming. If so, the autumn feasts are
- 43:46related to Jesus 'second coming. Just
- 43:50as the Feast of Trumpets on the 1st day
- 43:52of the 7th month announced the Day of
- 43:54Atonement on the 10th day, we are
- 43:56announcing Jesus' second coming through
- 43:58our Advent movement. Then, Jesus will
- 44:01return on the 10th day of the 7th month
- 44:02according to the Jewish calendar, and
- 44:04the subsequent Feast of Tabernacles is
- 44:06a feast to commemorate our salvation.
- 44:08We will keep that in heaven. Thus, in
- 44:12the history of the Adventist Church, a
- 44:14movement called the "Seventh Month
- 44:16Movement" arose on a large scale in the
- 44:19summer of 1844. Why the "Seventh Month
- 44:23Movement"? Because Jesus would return
- 44:25on the 10th day of the 7th month
- 44:27according to the Jewish calendar. That
- 44:30was October 22nd in the Gregorian
- 44:32calendar. Initially, it didn't get much
- 44:39attention, but from August 12th to 17th
- 44:42, 1844, at the Exeter camp meeting,
- 44:44this claim gained widespread support
- 44:46among Adventists, and the Seventh Month
- 44:49Movement began. Now, let's draw this on
- 44:55a chart. The first angel's message was
- 44:58fulfilled from 1840 to the autumn of
- 45:001844 through William Miller's Advent
- 45:02movement, and as mentioned earlier, the
- 45:05second angel follows it. However, "
- 45:07following" here means joining together.
- 45:10To be with. So, the second angel's
- 45:13message joins the first angel's message
- 45:15, and this is what we call the Seventh
- 45:17Month Movement. And the Adventist
- 45:22believers applied this typological
- 45:24beginning of the Seventh Month Movement
- 45:26, revealed by Snow in the summer of
- 45:281844, to the midnight cry in the
- 45:30parable of the ten virgins. The ten
- 45:33virgins all slumbered and slept because
- 45:35the bridegroom did not come at the
- 45:37expected hour. Then, at midnight, the
- 45:39cry was made: "Behold, the bridegroom
- 45:41is coming; go out to meet him!" So,
- 45:42those who were slumbering woke up and
- 45:44went out. Just as we experienced a
- 45:47small disappointment in the spring,
- 45:49when everyone was asleep, this call to
- 45:51go out and meet Him again gave the
- 45:53Advent movement new strength and
- 45:55vitality. However, this second angel's
- 46:01message does not end here; as noted
- 46:03earlier, it is progressive and
- 46:05cumulative. When we go to Revelation
- 46:10chapter 18, Pastor Haim Ju preached on
- 46:12this text earlier, crying mightily with
- 46:15a strong voice, "Babylon the great is
- 46:17fallen, is fallen!""Babylon the great"
- 46:19—it's the same as the second angel's
- 46:21message. But there is something more
- 46:23attached to it. What happened to
- 46:26Babylon is that it became a dwelling
- 46:28place for demons, a haunt for every
- 46:30foul spirit, and a cage for every
- 46:32unclean and detestable bird. This
- 46:38indicates that the apostate church—
- 46:40the dwelling place for demons, the
- 46:43various foul spirits, and the
- 46:44detestable birds—all point to
- 46:46spiritualism. Yes. It is metaphorically
- 46:51repeating and emphasizing spiritualism.
- 46:54It means that the church will
- 46:56eventually be dominated by spiritualism
- 46:58. So, in verse 4, when it says "My
- 47:01people," who does it say is in that
- 47:03Babylonian church? God's people are
- 47:05there. It means the message to "come
- 47:08out of her" will be proclaimed. Modern
- 47:15spiritualism first began on March 8,
- 47:171848, in Hydesville, upstate New York,
- 47:20by the Fox sisters. These people moved
- 47:25into a new house, and one day they
- 47:27noticed a knocking sound. They went to
- 47:30look, but there was no one there.
- 47:32However, the sound kept repeating. So,
- 47:38wondering if it might be a ghost, they
- 47:41said, "If you are truly a living spirit
- 47:43, knock once," and it knocked just once
- 47:45. Then they said, "If not, knock twice,
- 47:52" and it knocked twice. Just like how
- 47:56people used to communicate via Morse
- 47:58code, they started communicating with
- 48:00the spirits of the dead in that house
- 48:01through knocking. This was the
- 48:06beginning of modern spiritualism. Then,
- 48:11from 1914 to 1918, 20 million people
- 48:14died in World War I. And right after
- 48:17World War I ended, from 1919 to 1920,
- 48:20the Spanish Flu became a global
- 48:22pandemic, just like the COVID-19 we
- 48:25experienced, killing 50 million people.
- 48:30Most of the people who died in World
- 48:32War I and during this pandemic were in
- 48:35their 20s to 40s. Young people went to
- 48:38war, and since people didn't live as
- 48:40long back then during the flu, the ones
- 48:42who died were mostly the youth. You see
- 48:48, when so many people die like this,
- 48:50even COVID-19 changed our society and
- 48:53our way of thinking. Also, when events
- 48:58like the Sewol ferry sinking some years
- 49:00ago or the Itaewon crowd crush happen,
- 49:02they have such a deep impact that they
- 49:04even lead to national investigations.
- 49:10So, with 20 million dead from the war
- 49:12and 50 million dead from the Spanish
- 49:14Flu, there were those left behind.
- 49:18Lovers, wives, parents, and children
- 49:20left behind by their young fathers who
- 49:23passed away. Naturally, these people
- 49:27felt a deep longing for the dead. Satan
- 49:31used this to introduce spiritualism.
- 49:34That is why spiritualism became rampant
- 49:36in the United States. Do you know
- 49:39Arthur Conan Doyle? He is a very famous
- 49:43British author who wrote the Sherlock
- 49:45Holmes series. His son, Kingsley,
- 49:51participated in World War I in 1916 and
- 49:54was wounded in France. Then, in 1918,
- 49:59he died from the Spanish flu. In 1919,
- 50:03his younger brother died of the Spanish
- 50:06flu, and his brother-in-law also passed
- 50:09away. As people around him kept dying,
- 50:14Sir Doyle became so desperate to see
- 50:16his son again that he fell into
- 50:18Spiritualism. In a 1919 lecture, he
- 50:25described the scene of meeting his son
- 50:27through a séance. A large, strong hand
- 50:33was placed on my head, and it was
- 50:35gently bent forward. I heard the sound
- 50:40of a kiss right above my lips and I
- 50:41could feel it. So, I asked while
- 50:44weeping. "My son, tell me.""Are you
- 50:48happy?" There was silence, and I
- 50:51worried if my son had disappeared. I
- 50:54was anxious. Then, I heard a sigh and
- 50:59the words, "Yes, I am so happy."
- 51:05Everyone, if you communicate with a
- 51:07dead son you miss through Spiritualism,
- 51:09you cannot escape its influence. Later,
- 51:13this moved over to England. There is a
- 51:19museum in England called the Old
- 51:21Operating Theatre, which is in the
- 51:23attic of a church built in 1703. It was
- 51:29originally a place for treating
- 51:31patients, but now it is a place where
- 51:33Spiritualism is taught and experienced.
- 51:37Looking here, Spiritualism has been
- 51:41recognized as a new religion that came
- 51:43to England in the mid-19th century. The
- 51:46most important tenet of the
- 51:48Spiritualist movement, look closely. It
- 51:52can be characterized by the belief in
- 51:54the continuity of life after death,
- 51:55along with the conviction that the dead
- 51:57can communicate with the living through
- 51:59a medium. People remain alive after
- 52:03death and can communicate with the
- 52:05living through a medium. This is
- 52:08Spiritualism. However, look here. The
- 52:12principles of Spiritualism do not
- 52:14destroy the Christian faith but require
- 52:16an understanding of higher metaphysical
- 52:19principles. But Ellen White says: In*
- 52:23The Great Controversy*, Satan will
- 52:25bring people under his deception
- 52:27through two great errors: the
- 52:29immortality of the soul and Sunday
- 52:31sacredness. The immortality of the soul
- 52:36is the foundation of Spiritualism,
- 52:38right? Then, Sunday sacredness creates
- 52:42a sympathy for the Roman Church. So,
- 52:45they say the Protestant churches keep
- 52:48Sunday holy through the doctrine of
- 52:50Sunday sacredness. Through that, they
- 52:52are bound to grow closer to the
- 52:53Catholic Church. And later, if this
- 53:00gets worse, faith in the miracles of
- 53:02Spiritualism will open the door for
- 53:04deceiving spirits and doctrines of
- 53:06devils to enter, and people will feel
- 53:09the influence of evil angels within the
- 53:11church. While much of the Protestant
- 53:19church has not yet gone this far, even
- 53:21within Protestantism, things like
- 53:23healing the sick under the name of
- 53:25various gifts and communicating with
- 53:27the dead are now entering the church.
- 53:35This is from page 603 of The Great
- 53:37Controversy. This Bible verse points to
- 53:40a time when the message proclaimed by
- 53:42the second angel in Revelation 14, that
- 53:44Babylon has fallen, will be repeated.
- 53:46And it describes, in addition, the
- 53:48state of corruption that has permeated
- 53:51all the bodies that make up Babylon
- 53:53since this message was first proclaimed
- 53:55in the summer of 1844. Here, the
- 53:58fearful condition of the religious
- 54:00world is depicted. Now, everyone,
- 54:04please look at this chart. When the
- 54:06third angel's message is proclaimed,
- 54:07the first angel's message is still
- 54:09being proclaimed as well. It is still
- 54:11being proclaimed today. That Jesus is
- 54:13coming again. But regarding the second
- 54:17angel's message, the degree of
- 54:18corruption becomes progressively and
- 54:20cumulatively worse. So, spiritualism
- 54:24becomes completely rampant within the
- 54:26church. Then, it is prophesied here
- 54:31that the time will come for the message
- 54:33to be delivered to come out of Babylon.
- 54:38Every time they reject the truth,
- 54:40people's hearts become darker and more
- 54:42stubborn, and they are finally armed
- 54:44with great unbelief. They will continue
- 54:49to trample on one of the Ten
- 54:50Commandments until they ignore the
- 54:52warnings given by God and persecute
- 54:54those who faithfully keep His
- 54:55commandments. I will talk about this in
- 54:58detail when we cover the three angels '
- 55:00messages. Now, as we conclude the
- 55:02second angel's message today, what is
- 55:05the second angel's message? Fallen is.
- 55:08Fallen is. Babylon the great. This is
- 55:11proclaiming that Protestantism has
- 55:13fallen. So when we share the gospel,
- 55:17some people say, "Oh, I go to church.""
- 55:20Go and preach to people who don't
- 55:22believe." Have you ever heard something
- 55:23like that? Yes. But let's think. If
- 55:27someone buys very delicious fruit from
- 55:30an orchard in a certain region, and it
- 55:32tastes good and the fruit is very good.
- 55:36But I know a secret. I know that the
- 55:40farm owner is using a tremendous amount
- 55:42of pesticide to produce such perfect,
- 55:44blemish-free fruit. Then what should we
- 55:47do? No matter how delicious the fruit
- 55:50is and even if that person believes in
- 55:52it, if I am a person of conscience, I
- 55:54should say, "I heard they use a lot of
- 55:56pesticide.""You should tell them it is
- 55:59harmful to eat." There is no doubt that
- 56:03the Protestant church is a church that
- 56:05believes in Jesus today. However, as
- 56:09the prophecy shows, by rejecting the
- 56:11message once, the degree of corruption
- 56:13has continued to worsen, and it said
- 56:15that it finally becomes a dwelling
- 56:17place for demons. Those two factors are
- 56:22the immortality of the soul and the
- 56:24doctrine of Sunday sacredness. Yes.
- 56:30Therefore, since we Seventh-day
- 56:32Adventists have a duty to preach the
- 56:34gospel to those trapped in such
- 56:36misguided theology, we must tirelessly
- 56:38share the gospel, books, and our
- 56:40message not only with non-believers but
- 56:42also with God's people who are still
- 56:44within Babylon. Now, on page 214 of
- 56:53Last Day Events, there are several
- 56:55points about the people who will carry
- 56:57out this work. I would like to
- 57:01introduce just two points today: first,
- 57:03this work is not done by people with
- 57:06immense theological knowledge, but just
- 57:08as He called fishermen in ancient times
- 57:10to be His disciples, He will raise up
- 57:12men and women from among ordinary
- 57:14people to do His work. That is exactly
- 57:19you. You must do this work. And
- 57:23secondly, the work of the other angel
- 57:25who comes down from heaven with great
- 57:27power and lightens the earth with his
- 57:28glory will be largely accomplished
- 57:30through our publishing houses. That is
- 57:32why we keep producing printed materials
- 57:34. Creating books, Pastor Kim Dae-sung
- 57:37constantly producing books and
- 57:38magazines, sending them to people,
- 57:40collecting addresses, and sending those
- 57:43books to people we know—this is our
- 57:45work of spreading the second angel's
- 57:47message. And while Sister White spoke a
- 57:51lot about publishing houses in her day,
- 57:53today, what has more influence than
- 57:55books is YouTube. That is why we have
- 57:58this Channel 7 and various other
- 58:00channels here. Sharing and spreading
- 58:05these things to others is also sharing
- 58:07the second angel's message, and that is
- 58:09the reason we became Seventh-day
- 58:10Adventists and what our mission is.
- 58:15I will conclude my message hoping that
- 58:17the second angel's message will be
- 58:19spread more powerfully through you and
- 58:20through me.
- 58:21Amen.
