- 0:16Praise be to God. I bear witness that
- 0:18there is no god but God alone, with no
- 0:19partner, and I bear witness that
- 0:21Muhammad is His servant and messenger,
- 0:22may God’s peace and blessings be upon
- 0:24him.
- 0:26>> Welcome to this fourth session of this
- 0:28blessed course, "The Compass of Life."
- 0:32Throughout the lectures of this course,
- 0:36we have tried to give you a compass; it
- 0:39truly is a well-chosen name. I am
- 0:43merely guiding you; I won't do
- 0:45everything for you, but it started with
- 0:48the first lesson, which provided
- 0:51important concepts to face life. Just
- 0:55to enter the field. The field of life,
- 0:58simply entering it was. It required
- 1:01concepts. I could not have entered the
- 1:03entire field of success without those
- 1:05concepts. Which are purely Islamic
- 1:08concepts. We learned the value of our
- 1:09religion and the value of our creed.
- 1:11And the value of divine revelation in
- 1:13how I can face life. And how, through a
- 1:15set of concepts. My performance can be
- 1:17different from anyone else's. In my
- 1:19dealings with good, evil, and
- 1:20calamities. And my understanding of the
- 1:22issue of success. And this is what we
- 1:24discussed in the second lecture about.
- 1:27Now that I have entered the field. Once
- 1:29I enter the field, what should I do?
- 1:31What do I do? There are a hundred
- 1:32things to do, and they are all correct.
- 1:34What should I choose? How do I define
- 1:36my project? How do I define my path to
- 1:38success? How do I determine what my
- 1:41role will be? And how do I define my
- 1:46standards of success without
- 1:48compromising my religion or the
- 1:50beautiful traditions derived from our
- 1:53faith? In the second lecture, we talked
- 1:56about how to plan for success and how
- 1:58to define your project for success. We
- 2:00talked about the five higher objectives
- 2:02(Maqasid). We talked about how to
- 2:04identify your strengths, weaknesses,
- 2:06opportunities, and threats to map out
- 2:08your success plan. We actually went out
- 2:11and you benefited, and you said we all
- 2:13learned what each of us has. Things
- 2:15started to become clear; what is my
- 2:17role in life supposed to be? And how
- 2:19can I achieve servitude to God in any
- 2:21situation? And what does it mean that I
- 2:23can succeed in any state? And we
- 2:25learned that success is available to
- 2:27everyone. And everyone has a great
- 2:30opportunity to achieve success as long
- 2:31as they fulfill their servitude, strive
- 2:33, and seek the pleasure of God Almighty
- 2:35. The third lecture. We returned to the
- 2:39fact that our religion is inseparable
- 2:41from our plan. And that you need to
- 2:44prioritize your worship within your
- 2:46plan. We talked about prayer, even
- 2:49though we could have applied the same
- 2:51idea to fasting, pilgrimage, and zakat.
- 2:54All the rites of Islam instill meanings
- 2:56within us that make a difference in our
- 2:58plan for success. Success from God is
- 3:00sufficient. The blessing from God is
- 3:04enough; the more pious a person is, the
- 3:06closer they are to God’s guidance and
- 3:08the closer to blessing. There is a
- 3:12difference, folks, between achieving a
- 3:14result and achieving a blessed result.
- 3:17Someone might become a millionaire or a
- 3:20billionaire, hold degrees, and own
- 3:23companies, but where is the blessing?
- 3:26Where is God’s guidance? I swear, I
- 3:29have seen many homes belonging to
- 3:31millionaires—palaces you wouldn't
- 3:34imagine—that are as gloomy as graves.
- 3:37They live miserable, depressing lives.
- 3:41Do not be deceived by the numbers, the
- 3:43laughter on social media, or the fancy
- 3:46cars; inside, there are graves in their
- 3:48chests, dark homes, and difficult lives
- 3:51. I have also entered poor homes, yet
- 3:55they were radiant and full of blessing.
- 3:59So, the idea is that when I follow the
- 4:01plan I told you about, someone
- 4:03shouldn't come and say, as we mentioned
- 4:05before: "But there are people who
- 4:07succeeded without what you said." Well,
- 4:10go back and review what was said. What
- 4:11are the criteria for success that I
- 4:12mentioned? But I say it is enough. It
- 4:15is enough that a Muslim sleeps at ease,
- 4:17feeling secure, and not fearing that
- 4:19they have wronged anyone or strayed
- 4:21from God’s pleasure. It is enough to
- 4:25feel satisfied with God, that He is
- 4:27pleased with them, and they are pleased
- 4:29with Him. It is enough to feel the
- 4:32blessing in one's children and home. It
- 4:35is enough to have the "good life" that
- 4:38God provides—the life of the heart,
- 4:40which only those who meet the condition
- 4:42achieve: "Whoever does righteousness,
- 4:45whether male or female, while he is a
- 4:47believer—We will surely cause him to
- 4:49live a good life, and We will surely
- 4:52give them their reward [in the
- 4:53Hereafter] according to the best of
- 4:56what they used to do." Therefore, the
- 5:00good life is not about having a lot of
- 5:02money; there might be much money or
- 5:04little, but the good life is truly the
- 5:06life of the heart. "Whoever follows My
- 5:09guidance will neither go astray nor
- 5:11suffer." We talked about prayer as a
- 5:14model of how worship can contribute to
- 5:17my success plan, or rather, be one of
- 5:19the sources and criteria of my strength
- 5:21on the path to success. We talked about
- 5:2510 sources of strength in submissive
- 5:27prayer, which we discussed last time.
- 5:29What remains in this final lecture is
- 5:32to talk about the opposite: the
- 5:34greatest enemies of success. Today, I
- 5:37will talk about one enemy because the
- 5:39course might not allow time for many
- 5:41things, but today the topic might be
- 5:43surprising. I will not talk about sins
- 5:46and disobedience. Even though that is
- 5:48expected, and something you might
- 5:50anticipate. But that is perhaps
- 5:52self-evident. Self-evident, meaning it
- 5:54is obvious that, as we said regarding
- 5:56prayer, one of the sources of strength
- 5:58in prayer is that it wipes away sins,
- 6:00and sins are always the greatest cause
- 6:02of lack of success, a reason for narrow
- 6:04provision, and a cause of hatred in the
- 6:06hearts of people, as Ibn Abbas, may God
- 6:08be pleased with him, said. But today, I
- 6:10will talk about something we all touch
- 6:13upon in our reality. And something we
- 6:14all suffer from. And I wonder, what do
- 6:17you think is the greatest enemy of
- 6:18human success? Even if they truly
- 6:20understood the first lecture. And
- 6:22possesses. The concepts and has stepped
- 6:23into the field of life. And set up a
- 6:25project and prays, and everything is
- 6:27fine. Yet there is a big problem here.
- 6:33The problem of laziness. Laziness, I
- 6:38believe, is one of the greatest enemies
- 6:41of success. And that is it. It is a
- 6:44part of the self, just as you call it:
- 6:46laziness. Because some might say
- 6:48laziness is a trait of the self, but it
- 6:50is actually one of the problems of the
- 6:52self. Why am I talking about laziness
- 6:55specifically today? Because laziness is
- 6:59a beloved enemy. You know the problem,
- 7:04none of us likes committing sins. When
- 7:08one of us commits a sin, they feel bad
- 7:09about themselves. But the problem with
- 7:12laziness is that it is a beloved enemy;
- 7:14the self loves it. We will also talk
- 7:16about procrastination. Uh. Everyone
- 7:22loves comfort and dislikes fatigue. The
- 7:26self always tends toward comfort. It
- 7:28does not like responsibilities. It does
- 7:30not like pressure. It does not like
- 7:33being constantly in a state of pressure
- 7:35, schedules, and deadlines. No, no, let
- 7:39me just...let me rest a bit. Because I
- 7:42don't like to be constantly pressured.
- 7:44I don't like too many tasks. I like
- 7:47being relaxed like this. To relax means
- 7:49to do just one or two things all day.
- 7:51That's very nice. And sleep a lot. And
- 7:53eat a lot. And play PlayStation. And
- 7:56watch many, many reels and YouTube
- 7:58videos. And talk on the phone a lot.
- 8:01And watch TV a lot. And then sleep
- 8:03because we got so tired. So, there is
- 8:06no doubt that laziness is beloved to
- 8:08the self. You are talking about it
- 8:10while knowing it is your enemy. I mean,
- 8:11it is the thing that destroys you. And
- 8:14surely these lectures will resonate
- 8:17with you, you feel it. Because we are
- 8:20in the study period. So you are caught
- 8:22between two fires. Laziness is sweet.
- 8:25But I know that every bitterness I will
- 8:28see later because of my grades is due
- 8:30to this laziness. Laziness is what will
- 8:34cost me the college I want. This
- 8:36laziness is what will make me get a bad
- 8:38grade. It will be a problem at home.
- 8:40Laziness might make me fail subjects.
- 8:43Laziness is what might make me repeat
- 8:45the year. Yet, I love it. I don't know
- 8:48what to do with it. As we said, it is
- 8:51an enemy. But unfortunately, a beloved
- 8:53enemy. And here lies the danger.
- 8:56Imagine someone who loves their enemy.
- 8:57They say, "The cat loves its fighter."
- 9:00So, a person hates laziness and loves
- 9:02it at the same time. They love it
- 9:04because the nature of the self is to
- 9:06love comfort. But with their mind, they
- 9:08hate it. Because their problem and all
- 9:11their regrets are always because of
- 9:13what? Laziness. That is why we call
- 9:15laziness "voluntary incapacity." What
- 9:17does voluntary incapacity mean?
- 9:18Voluntary incapacity means that a
- 9:20person might be truly incapacitated for
- 9:21some reason. Someone has a disability
- 9:24in their hand, incapacitated by illness
- 9:26, so they can't study, they can't. They
- 9:29can't pray much, they can't. This is
- 9:31called forced incapacity. Forced
- 9:34incapacity, of course. Certainly not
- 9:36something a person wishes for. One
- 9:39seeks refuge in God from it, but worse
- 9:41than that is voluntary incapacity,
- 9:43where the tools are working, your
- 9:44health is fine, your hand is fine, your
- 9:46time is fine, and nothing is stopping
- 9:48you. And I am the one who stopped
- 9:51myself. So we call this voluntary
- 9:53incapacity. You chose the incapacity
- 9:54yourself. Therefore, the great
- 9:57prophetic prayer was: "O God, I seek
- 9:59refuge in You from incapacity and
- 10:01laziness." Why combine incapacity with
- 10:03laziness? Because incapacity is
- 10:05involuntary helplessness. That a person
- 10:07becomes incapacitated. A disaster
- 10:08happens that stops his leg. Stops his
- 10:10hand. He is struck with blindness. He
- 10:12is struck with illness. He becomes
- 10:14bedridden. Surely, no one likes that.
- 10:16And no one wishes for that. So a person
- 10:18says, "Oh Lord, I seek refuge in You."
- 10:19The Prophet, peace and blessings be
- 10:21upon him, used to say, "Oh God, let us
- 10:23enjoy our hearing, our sight, and our
- 10:24strength as long as You keep us alive."
- 10:26Surely, every one of us likes to enjoy.
- 10:28So, "let us enjoy"? What does "let us
- 10:30enjoy" mean? Should we go play, joke
- 10:31around, and waste time? PlayStation,
- 10:33Reels, and Facebook? No, let us enjoy.
- 10:36Let us enjoy through obedience. Let us
- 10:38enjoy by...being able to perform many
- 10:40acts of worship and achieve much in
- 10:42life. Surely, illness hinders. Surely,
- 10:44paralysis hinders. Surely, blindness
- 10:46hinders. So no one likes that. But if
- 10:50God tests you with that, go back to the
- 10:52second lecture where we discussed the
- 10:54plan of servitude. It will not conflict
- 10:56with any situation. Even the
- 10:58incapacitated person will have a plan
- 11:00of servitude—we talked about the
- 11:01woman who had seizures and would
- 11:02uncover herself—there will be a plan
- 11:04of servitude suitable for your
- 11:05situation. But if it were up to my
- 11:07choice, if it were up to my
- 11:08supplication. I would say, "Oh Lord, do
- 11:09not test me." Oh Lord, none of us.
- 11:12Likes incapacity. But if I am fated
- 11:13with incapacity, I am satisfied with
- 11:15Your decree. If I can change it, I will
- 11:17. If I cannot, I am content with what
- 11:19You ordain. But the problem lies in
- 11:21laziness. Laziness is not something
- 11:24that happened to you against your will.
- 11:26It is worse than incapacity, because
- 11:29you. Are to be blamed for it. As for
- 11:31incapacity, it might be out of a
- 11:32person's control. What can we do? It is
- 11:34God’s decree. But for laziness, you
- 11:36are to be blamed. Therefore, God.
- 11:39Blames the...He blames the person for
- 11:41being lazy. Truly, laziness is
- 11:43condemned in the Sharia. The Prophet,
- 11:46peace and blessings be upon him, used
- 11:47to say, "Oh God, I seek refuge in You
- 11:49from incapacity and laziness." And it
- 11:53was among the Prophet's supplications,
- 11:55"Oh God, I ask You for steadfastness in
- 11:56the matter and determination for
- 11:58guidance." Notice the difference
- 12:01between steadfastness in the matter and
- 12:03determination for guidance.
- 12:06Steadfastness in the matter is like the
- 12:07plan itself, that I am established
- 12:09before I do anything. Meaning, I think
- 12:12well, I plan well. I do not rush. I do
- 12:16not walk in a wrong path. So,
- 12:19steadfastness in the matter means the
- 12:21path itself is correct. Well, is it
- 12:24enough for the path to be correct? No,
- 12:26I still need to walk. I mean, it is
- 12:28nice that I planned. As we said in the
- 12:31lecture about. I made the plan. And I
- 12:33knew the field where I can be useful.
- 12:34And I determined my plan of servitude.
- 12:37Now, I must walk in it. I cannot. I am
- 12:40lazy. Then you need determination for
- 12:43guidance. These two requests. Are not
- 12:45one request. This is different from
- 12:47that. Steadfastness in the matter.
- 12:48Meaning, oh Lord, guide me to the right
- 12:51path and. That I am well-established
- 12:53before I move at all. Because I might
- 12:55move on a wrong path. I might, after
- 12:57moving for a long time, discover that I
- 12:59wish I had planned correctly from the
- 13:01start. I wish I had made a sound
- 13:02decision from the start. So, oh Lord,
- 13:04first, steadfastness in the matter. The
- 13:06plan is fine. The path is right. And
- 13:09with Your success, oh Lord, it is good.
- 13:11Give me the resolve for right guidance.
- 13:13Give me the energy. Give me the zeal.
- 13:16Give me the activity. Protect me from
- 13:18laziness. Now, get going. It was among
- 13:21the supplications of the Prophet, peace
- 13:22and blessings be upon him: "O Allah, I
- 13:24ask You for steadfastness in all my
- 13:26affairs and the resolve for right
- 13:27guidance." So, you see how much the
- 13:30Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
- 13:31him, cared about the issue of laziness.
- 13:34The issue of zeal. The issue of taking
- 13:35initiative. It makes a big difference.
- 13:37Laziness is your beloved enemy. The one
- 13:39we want to get rid of today. Ibn
- 13:42al-Jawzi, may Allah have mercy on him,
- 13:44has a great book called "Captured
- 13:46Thoughts.""Captured Thoughts.""Captured
- 13:48Thoughts." When thoughts came to him,
- 13:49he would capture them and write them in
- 13:51the. book, so he named the thoughts he
- 13:53captured and wrote down "Captured
- 13:55Thoughts." As if they were thoughts he
- 13:57was capturing and putting into a book.
- 13:59Among the thoughts he expressed in the
- 14:01book "Captured Thoughts," he said: "And
- 14:03what remains for one who dwells in
- 14:05laziness?" It was a mental debate: "O
- 14:09lazy one, with what will you come out?"
- 14:13"And what remains for one who dwells in
- 14:14laziness when he sees his peers
- 14:16excelling in knowledge while he is
- 14:17ignorant?""Or becoming wealthy through
- 14:21trade while he remains poor?""Does any
- 14:23meaning remain for the pleasure of
- 14:25laziness and rest?" Think, the one who
- 14:28is lazy, the one who. is lazy, think
- 14:31with me. And you have seen before the
- 14:33consequences of laziness. Laziness
- 14:35certainly has a pleasure. But it is a
- 14:36present, temporary pleasure. However,
- 14:39after a while, it is followed by
- 14:40regrets. The one who thinks now that
- 14:44what they have is sweet, thinking: "Oh,
- 14:48come on, studying what?" Forget about
- 14:51it. Laziness, what did the one who
- 14:53studied gain? And they sit there
- 14:54thinking that it is so delightful. And
- 14:57that they are like, you know, cool,
- 15:00acting tough, and there's no studying.
- 15:03And we are just fine. May Allah bless
- 15:08you. And they think that they are what?
- 15:10And when her friend tells her to study.
- 15:12She says, "Study what?""We don't study.
- 15:14""We'll just trust in Allah and so on."
- 15:17Thinking that she is being cool.
- 15:19Thinking that she is so great. Now come
- 15:21to me, this same girl, on the day of
- 15:23the results. When she sees, right.
- 15:25Seeing the results of her friends who
- 15:27studied. And sees her own result.
- 15:30Remember Ibn al-Jawzi's words. Does any
- 15:32meaning remain for the pleasure of
- 15:34laziness and rest? On that day, will
- 15:36you still be enjoying the pleasure that
- 15:38. you caused for yourself? Or will
- 15:40nothing remain for you but regrets?
- 15:42While you see your friend pass the year
- 15:44, and you are repeating it. While you
- 15:46see your friend pass with honors, and
- 15:47you have failed two subjects. While you
- 15:50see your peers moving on to a new year.
- 15:53And when you go to repeat the year and
- 15:55find. a class where you don't know
- 15:57anyone, and your friends are still
- 15:59together in the second year and have
- 16:01forgotten you because you parted from
- 16:02them, will laziness have any meaning
- 16:04then? When you are at the study circle.
- 16:09You went to the circle and sat with the
- 16:11sisters. And you found them all having
- 16:13zeal. They all show up on time. They
- 16:14all memorize the required amount. They
- 16:16all follow along with the teacher.
- 16:18While you are here once and absent
- 16:19twice, once and three times. No, and
- 16:21even when you do go, you haven't
- 16:23memorized well. And you are repeating.
- 16:25A year or two has passed. Come and see
- 16:27where you are and where they are. They
- 16:29have finished or. Memorized, one has
- 16:32memorized half the Quran, a quarter,
- 16:33and others have finished, while you
- 16:35unfortunately haven't finished
- 16:36Al-Baqarah, you’ve been at it for a
- 16:38year, you haven't finished 'Amma and
- 16:40Tabarak for a year. When we see the
- 16:43competition. And we see the prizes. And
- 16:44we see the certificates. And we see and
- 16:47see. I wonder, will it remain? Huh,
- 16:50will it remain? This pleasure. Will any
- 16:56pleasure of laziness remain, or will
- 17:00only regret remain when I am, for
- 17:03example, not working well? And I am
- 17:07lazy in my work. And I go in late. And
- 17:09I don't work well. And my managers see
- 17:12me as a lazy person. I sleep on the job
- 17:14. I leave. Early. I go in late. I don't
- 17:17do my tasks. The day of the bonus comes
- 17:20. People got a bonus and I didn't. The
- 17:22day of promotion comes. People. People
- 17:26got promoted, and I stayed put. Will I
- 17:29be happy then that I go in late? Will I
- 17:32be happy that I leave early? Will I be
- 17:34happy. With the hour I sleep at work?
- 17:36Or will I be regretful then? And
- 17:38nothing will remain but regret.
- 17:39Remember, each of us has moments from
- 17:41the past, and moments we still imagine
- 17:43if they happened. The past moments are
- 17:45a lesson for you. Because surely we all
- 17:48went through a phase where we were lazy
- 17:49. And we saw the result of the
- 17:51difference when we fell behind others
- 17:53because of laziness. And we regretted
- 17:55it. And we saw the difference between
- 17:57those who were active and kept going,
- 17:58and those who were lazy and sat back.
- 18:00And let these regrets—I don't want
- 18:02them to be just things that break you
- 18:03now. No, let them be a drive for you,
- 18:07that this won't happen again. And I
- 18:10won't go through this psychological
- 18:12pain again. I have tasted it a lot, and
- 18:14it is enough. So this makes me get up,
- 18:17get up to study, get up to memorize.
- 18:20Not to neglect an appointment, the
- 18:22circle, not to neglect the lesson or
- 18:24the course I'm enrolled in. Not to
- 18:26neglect my job, my work, and my
- 18:28diligence in earning my living. Because
- 18:31this saying of Ibn al-Jawzi, frame it,
- 18:34put it in your rooms. And put it on the
- 18:36desk. Every time you are lazy to study,
- 18:38or read the Quran, or memorize, or seek
- 18:41knowledge, or even strive in your
- 18:43worldly work, remember Ibn al-Jawzi's
- 18:45words well. Does the enjoyment of
- 18:47laziness remain and go with us? Imagine
- 18:49the regret on the Day of Resurrection
- 18:51when the ranks are distributed to the
- 18:53people, when it is said to the
- 18:55companion of the Quran, "Read, ascend,
- 18:57and recite," and you find the one who
- 18:59finished has passed you, and half the
- 19:01Quran is passing you—will there be
- 19:03any pleasure for laziness then when we
- 19:05see the people of night prayer passing
- 19:07us in Paradise? Even if I entered it, I
- 19:09will be regretful that I what? That I
- 19:13—oh, I'm sorry, we must face
- 19:15ourselves, everyone. Sorry, as one of
- 19:19the predecessors said—a man was
- 19:21saying to one of the predecessors,
- 19:23saying to him, "I accompany people who
- 19:25make me afraid." Keep this word,
- 19:28everyone, so you don't get upset with
- 19:31me when I push you. By God, I treat you
- 19:34like an older brother. And maybe I am
- 19:35old enough to be a father to some of
- 19:37you too. Uh. The man said to some of
- 19:45the predecessors. He said, "I accompany
- 19:48people who always make me afraid." They
- 19:50always make me afraid, they caution me.
- 19:53He said, "For you to accompany people
- 19:55who make you afraid until you reach
- 19:57safety is better for you than
- 19:58accompanying people who make you feel
- 20:00safe until you reach fear." Take it
- 20:05from me so you can be better. Take it
- 20:08from me so you don't hear it later.
- 20:10After a lifetime has passed and time
- 20:12has run out. There is no regret in
- 20:14Paradise. The anguish will be at the
- 20:17gathering place, Muhammad, before
- 20:19entering Paradise, when...When people
- 20:21start to know their states and ranks,
- 20:23that is when those who fell short will
- 20:25regret. But after entering Paradise, it
- 20:27is over. No one...God will remove
- 20:30whatever regrets are in the souls and
- 20:33all such things, okay. But at the
- 20:35gathering place, God said: "And warn
- 20:36them of the Day of Anguish when the
- 20:37matter is decided." There is no one on
- 20:38the Day of Judgment who will not feel
- 20:40anguish. Even the diligent will feel
- 20:41anguish that they did not do more. Okay
- 20:45, let us continue with a nice little
- 20:47piece to lighten the mood so you are
- 20:49not startled. We have exclusive
- 20:51theories here in Egypt, folks. Meaning,
- 20:54they don't exist in any planet or any
- 20:55place in the world except in Egypt only
- 20:57. Exclusive theories. And we believe
- 21:00they are fixed theories. One of them is
- 21:04saying: "Live like an ant to eat sugar.
- 21:07""Live like an ant to eat sugar" is a
- 21:10very beautiful theory. When we want to
- 21:13comfort ourselves. And we want to
- 21:15deceive ourselves that, "Hey man,
- 21:16it’s no problem." You are small and
- 21:18have no purpose. Ants eat sugar. So
- 21:23this great proverb came about: "Live
- 21:25like an ant to eat sugar." And all of
- 21:30us who lived like ants ended up eating
- 21:32no sugar at all. And in the end, the
- 21:34one who eats sugar is the one who was
- 21:36diligent. And the one who worked on
- 21:37himself. But that is an Egyptian theory
- 21:40that has no meaning. We just deceive
- 21:42ourselves with it. Among the nice
- 21:46proverbs that are sometimes said is: "
- 21:48If you want success, pull the blanket
- 21:50over and rest." This is also one of the
- 21:53theories that no one understands to
- 21:54this day. And no one understands who
- 21:56said it. And no one understands who
- 21:58became convinced by it. And no one
- 22:00understands why some people are still
- 22:02con...it is a very amazing thing. The
- 22:05problem is that these things are said.
- 22:06They are said among students. And we
- 22:08keep deceiving ourselves with this talk
- 22:10. Until we are surprised and shocked by
- 22:14the result. Or by the delay. Or that
- 22:16everyone has surpassed you. And you
- 22:19discover that...that...that...That "
- 22:21that, that, that" is a type of what?
- 22:24That I was deceived. And that I lived
- 22:25in these illusions. There are many of
- 22:27these illusory Egyptian theories. I did
- 22:29not want to bring up other things, so
- 22:31they would not suit this council of
- 22:33knowledge. Actually, there is talk...of
- 22:35course, you surely have high experience
- 22:37with such proverbs, right? And whoever
- 22:40has a proverb should write it down. But
- 22:42I actually know many. But some are
- 22:45things I cannot say, even in a solemn
- 22:48council like this one. But surely you
- 22:52all hear them, especially while you are
- 22:54studying and striving. You find your
- 22:56friend telling you a sentence from
- 22:58these purely Egyptian theories. Beware,
- 23:00beware of exposing yourselves to words
- 23:03like these. These are words that have a
- 23:05dark end. Do not frustrate yourself
- 23:07with them. Do not sedate yourself with
- 23:09them. But you should take the poet's
- 23:11advice; that is where the truth lies,
- 23:13in the poet's words. He used to say the
- 23:17great line: "Whoever fears climbing
- 23:20mountains, lives forever among the pits
- 23:23." Whoever fears, whoever is afraid of
- 23:27climbing the mountain, will stay in the
- 23:29pits his whole life. Whoever fears
- 23:32climbing the mountain. Whoever always
- 23:34wants to live like an ant. Whoever
- 23:36wants to sleep, pull up the covers, and
- 23:39rest. You will remain your whole life
- 23:41down in the pits. And you will not
- 23:43reach, what is it, success. Alright?
- 23:53That is why the poet said what? Do not
- 23:55think that glory is a date you can
- 23:58easily eat. You will not attain glory
- 24:04until you taste the bitterness of aloe.
- 24:08Do not think that glory is a date you
- 24:10can easily eat. You will not attain
- 24:12glory until you taste the bitterness.
- 24:15Meaning. Tasting the bitterness, so we
- 24:17must know that everything has a price.
- 24:20He who fears climbing mountains lives
- 24:22forever among the pits. Write this down
- 24:25too, it's one of the beautiful things.
- 24:28I will say it again: do not think that
- 24:30glory is a date. Do not think that
- 24:32glory is a date you can easily eat.
- 24:34It’s not a date, the matter isn't
- 24:35that simple. Do not think that glory is
- 24:38a date you can easily eat. You will not
- 24:41attain glory until you taste the
- 24:42bitterness. Meaning until you taste the
- 24:45bitterness. Alright, so let's set some
- 24:49specific rules. Rules for the war on
- 24:52laziness. How do I want to fight
- 24:55laziness? I must first establish the
- 24:57foundation. Rules, and as usual, rules
- 24:59provide comfort; just as we said,
- 25:01concepts for facing life. This is a set
- 25:04of concepts for facing laziness. I want
- 25:07some concepts first to confront
- 25:09laziness and tell myself that this
- 25:11won't work. These aren't rules. There
- 25:14are rules in life, including religious
- 25:16ones. And they are intuitive and
- 25:17rational rules. One, the world is not a
- 25:19place of laziness to begin with. It is
- 25:22not a place of rest. We aren't here to
- 25:24rest at all. We are here just to toil.
- 25:26Meaning you came here to work hard. We
- 25:30must accept the basic rule that we are
- 25:33not here for rest. The place of rest is
- 25:37over there in Paradise. This world is a
- 25:40place of work and effort. It is not a
- 25:43place for stillness and comfort. And
- 25:46that true rest is there. You came. Here
- 25:49, yes, exactly like that. God said so
- 25:51in several places. He said: "We have
- 25:54certainly created man into hardship."
- 25:56Imagine, into hardship, meaning.
- 25:58Meaning he is inside the hardship
- 25:59itself, a continuous hardship that
- 26:01never ends. That is how it is, that is
- 26:03the nature of life. But its advantage
- 26:04is that it is short, and it will end
- 26:06quickly. On the Day of Resurrection,
- 26:07you will feel it was just an hour. "On
- 26:09the Day We gather them, [it will be] as
- 26:10if they had not remained [in the world]
- 26:11but an hour of the day.""On the Day
- 26:12they see it, [it will be] as though
- 26:13they had not remained [in the world]
- 26:14except an evening or a morning." Yes,
- 26:16we will toil, but we will toil for a
- 26:17very short period compared to the time
- 26:19you will spend in the grave. And after
- 26:21that, 50,000 years on the Day of
- 26:22Resurrection. And then eternity without
- 26:24death in Paradise or in Hell, we seek
- 26:26refuge in God from the Fire. You will
- 26:29feel that this world was...why didn't I
- 26:31work during that hour? It was truly an
- 26:32hour. Meaning, 20 or 30 years of work
- 26:35compared to a grave that could last for
- 26:38years, with 50,000 years just for the
- 26:40Day of Reckoning. With eternity
- 26:42afterwards in Paradise or in Hell. The
- 26:45matter could have been easy. I could
- 26:46have worked hard for that short time.
- 26:48Imagine someone said to you, work for
- 26:51me at my house. You are a man, you are
- 26:53now, a woman who is a professional, a
- 26:55decor engineer, let's say. Suppose
- 26:58someone came to you and said, "I just
- 27:00want you to tell me what to do in the
- 27:01house.""I need you for an hour to tell
- 27:04me how to organize the house." Then you
- 27:07said, "Okay, how much will you pay me
- 27:08for this hour?" He said, "I’ll give
- 27:10you a million pounds." You said, "What?
- 27:13A million pounds, really?""Are you
- 27:15serious?" He said, "Yes, I swear I'll
- 27:16give you a million pounds.""I want to
- 27:17give you a million pounds, but on one
- 27:19condition.""On one condition: don't
- 27:21rest for a single minute.""Don't rest
- 27:25for a minute, and don't waste time on
- 27:27the phone.""Don't sit around eating and
- 27:30drinking too much, don't joke with
- 27:33anyone, and don't...""I want a full
- 27:35hour for myself,""And in exchange, a
- 27:39million pounds." What do you think of
- 27:42this offer? Would any of you even think
- 27:45about wasting a single minute of that
- 27:48hour? Or joke during it? Or even pick
- 27:52up their phone? Or, for example, sit
- 27:54around wasting time eating and drinking
- 27:56? Or watch television? Or follow a show
- 28:00? I mean, go watch Reels and Shorts on
- 28:04YouTube? It's just 60 minutes. 60
- 28:07minutes, a million pounds, and it will
- 28:09be over, right? You'd be telling
- 28:11yourself, "It’s just an hour, it will
- 28:13end, it will end." It's an hour, an
- 28:14hour we'll spend, it will pass, and
- 28:16that's a million pounds. And every time
- 28:18your inner self tells you, "Let's waste
- 28:20time, let's rest a bit," you'll say, "
- 28:22Sorry, there's no time for rest." It's
- 28:24an hour and it will pass, a million
- 28:26pounds, a million pounds, let's go. I
- 28:29swear you won't waste a moment; I won't
- 28:31even say a minute, you won't waste a
- 28:32second. And the man told her, "There
- 28:35are surveillance cameras I've set up,
- 28:36and I'm watching you.""I'm watching you
- 28:39.""If you do what I told you, you'll
- 28:42get the million pounds." Well, that's
- 28:44life, guys. I swear by God, we will all
- 28:46feel like it was just an hour; God
- 28:48Himself said so. "And on the Day the
- 28:51Hour is established, the criminals will
- 28:52swear they had not remained [in the
- 28:54world] but an hour." That is exactly
- 28:56what this life is. Yes, it's a place of
- 28:58hardship, but it's just an hour. Would
- 29:00any of you say? "I, I can't endure the
- 29:03hardship for an hour." Would you say
- 29:05that? I mean, if someone came—sorry,
- 29:07I'll ask you a question and you answer
- 29:10it. If someone came after half an hour
- 29:13of working in this apartment and said,
- 29:15"Engineer, quickly, Engineer Abeer for
- 29:17example, I feel like you're tired, rest
- 29:19a little," what would you say to him?
- 29:25Even if you are actually tired, for
- 29:27example, you would say to him, "No,
- 29:29tired? What? This is very beautiful
- 29:31work! I’m at the height of happiness,
- 29:33I’m not tired at all! Who told you
- 29:35I’m tired?" He says to her, "You look
- 29:38exhausted.""Even your face is pale.""
- 29:41This...this...this is makeup.""I'm very
- 29:44fine.""I'm not tired at all, see?" You
- 29:48would stay. Denying that you are tired?
- 29:50Saying, "I am very happy with the work.
- 29:51" Why? What makes you resist and
- 29:55actually be happy even though you are
- 29:58tired? Anticipating the reward;
- 30:03remembering the reward makes everything
- 30:06easy. Everything becomes trivial. This
- 30:08hour will pass. "Uh, yeah, no, no, I'm
- 30:11not tired.""I'm alert, I'm fine.""No,
- 30:14rest, rest.""I feel like you're worn
- 30:16out.""No, I'm not worn out." Well, eat
- 30:18Lebanese food, there's no time for food
- 30:20. Oh, what happened? That's how it is.
- 30:22If we see the world as an hour that
- 30:24will pass, there's no time for rest.
- 30:26The reward is so immense, the whole
- 30:28matter will become so much easier. And
- 30:30you will find laziness, cast it out.
- 30:31These are rules. The second rule, yes,
- 30:34they are all rules. I mean, they
- 30:36overlap. But they are just some
- 30:37headings to put down. Rules of what? He
- 30:40who abandons rest, seeks rest. It's
- 30:42very simple, memorize it. He who
- 30:44abandons rest, seeks what? Rest. If you
- 30:48want to rest there, tire yourself here,
- 30:51and vice versa. He who seeks rest,
- 30:54abandons rest. And remember the words
- 30:59of the Prophet, peace be upon him, when
- 31:01his time of death approached, peace be
- 31:03upon him. What did Lady Fatima say? Who
- 31:05can tell me what Lady Fatima said when
- 31:07she attended the Prophet, peace be upon
- 31:09him? What did she say to him? She said
- 31:11a word to him. We must think about it.
- 31:14And his response to it is very profound
- 31:15, peace be upon him. Let's think about
- 31:17it. She said. Fatima, while she was
- 31:20sitting with him as he was in the
- 31:22throes of death, peace be upon him, she
- 31:25said just one word. Hmm. What did she
- 31:30say? She said. Yes. She said, "Oh, the
- 31:36distress of my father, oh, the distress
- 31:39of my father." Okay. The Prophet, peace
- 31:41be upon him. What did he reply to her?
- 31:42I already gave you a hint about the
- 31:44first part. Yes, well done Asmaa,
- 31:52that's correct, excellent. He said, "No
- 31:57distress," this great word, make it a
- 32:00life motto. He said, "No distress,"
- 32:02excellent Ms. Hanan. He said, "No
- 32:05distress for your father after today."
- 32:08Why? Because I am going to die. On the
- 32:11contrary, death is the gateway to rest
- 32:14for me. The distress has ended, the
- 32:16fatigue has ended. I tired myself to
- 32:19rest now. I tired myself so I wouldn't
- 32:22have to tire later. Whereas the
- 32:25criminal, the wicked, or the corrupt,
- 32:27their fatigue begins with death: the
- 32:29striking of the angels, the torment of
- 32:31the grave. But for the believer, death
- 32:35is the beginning of rest, the beginning
- 32:38of the end of distress and fatigue. So
- 32:41I am tiring myself here so that we can
- 32:43finally rest. And whoever tells you to
- 32:44"tire yourself so you can rest." In
- 32:46this world, no one rests in this world.
- 32:48I'm sorry. You will be tired as a child
- 32:49. And you tire while in primary school.
- 32:51And you tire while in middle school.
- 32:52You tire while in high school. You tire
- 32:53in college. After college, you will
- 32:55rest. On the contrary, it will begin.
- 32:57The fatigue of work, the pursuit of
- 32:59marriage, and marriage itself. And
- 33:00childbirth, pregnancy, breastfeeding,
- 33:03and children. And the problems of
- 33:05children, and raising them until they
- 33:07get married. And after that, illnesses
- 33:09start to creep in after a long life.
- 33:11And illness upon illness, illness,
- 33:13fatigue, and diseases. No one rests. We
- 33:17are not here to rest. There is no such
- 33:20thing as "tire yourself in the world to
- 33:21rest in the world." No one tires in
- 33:23this world to rest in this world; that
- 33:24is how it is. The whole world is like
- 33:26this. Meaning, so you can be in harmony
- 33:28with yourself, so you don't. So you
- 33:29don't clash, I mean. But after. Death,
- 33:33you will rest, and it will become for
- 33:35you the greatest, most beloved thing to
- 33:37you, to meet Allah Almighty to rest.
- 33:40That is why Bilal, his sister was
- 33:42crying beside him as he was dying, and
- 33:44he said, "What makes you cry? What are
- 33:47you crying for? Tomorrow I will meet
- 33:49the loved ones, Muhammad and his
- 33:51companions." Oh, the people who were
- 33:54not lazy in life, look, how do they see
- 33:56death? Do you see? Finally, I will rest
- 33:59. I'll rest now, but whoever is lazy in
- 34:03life will face it. At the time of death
- 34:05, they will be afraid. They will be
- 34:06afraid. They will be terrified. Not
- 34:08knowing what will happen. "I was too
- 34:09lazy to pray Fajr.""I was lazy.""To do
- 34:11my daily supplications.""I was too lazy
- 34:13to...""Well, what will happen?""It's
- 34:16not a huge disaster." So, whoever
- 34:18abandons...The search for comfort. Yes,
- 34:20the third rule makes you hate laziness.
- 34:23Laziness comes to you from Satan, so
- 34:25don't lose the battle; this is your
- 34:27enemy who does not want what's good for
- 34:30you. That is why the Hadith says what?
- 34:32It states from the Prophet, peace and
- 34:34blessings be upon him. That Satan ties
- 34:36three knots at the nape of one's neck
- 34:38while they are asleep. When they want
- 34:42to get up at night or get up to pray
- 34:43Fajr. He tells them, "You have a long
- 34:45night ahead, so sleep.""You have a long
- 34:47night, so sleep, sleep." He said, if
- 34:50they get up and remember Allah Almighty
- 34:52, one knot is untied. If they perform
- 34:54ablution, one knot is untied. If they
- 34:56pray, all the knots are untied. And
- 34:59they wake up energetic and in good
- 35:00spirits. Otherwise, they wake up with a
- 35:03foul spirit, lazy. Otherwise, they wake
- 35:05up with a foul spirit, lazy. So, who
- 35:07brought you this laziness? Satan. He
- 35:10wishes for you to remain lazy. Everyone
- 35:12, Satan does not love any good for us.
- 35:13Neither in this world nor in the
- 35:15hereafter. Even if it's worldly success
- 35:16, he doesn't want it for you. So he
- 35:19makes you lazy so you fail. Because
- 35:21failure causes you frustration. And
- 35:23psychologically, you are destroyed.
- 35:25Alright. Yes, excellent, Asmaa. A true
- 35:29rule. Important for a person. Yes,
- 35:31although there is hardship in this
- 35:33world, it is only physical hardship,
- 35:35but the soul, as we said, is in
- 35:36happiness. As for the disbeliever, both
- 35:39physical hardship and spiritual
- 35:40hardship converge upon him. That is why
- 35:43God said in the Quran, Asmaa: "If you
- 35:45are suffering..." True, in the Battle
- 35:47of Uhud, there was hardship here and
- 35:49hardship there, but God said there is a
- 35:51difference: "If you are suffering, they
- 35:53are suffering just as you are suffering
- 35:55," meaning physically, but you hope for
- 35:57from God what they do not hope for. And
- 36:00God is All-Knowing, All-Wise. So this
- 36:01is always what keeps the believer in
- 36:02happiness. Even if the body is tired.
- 36:04But they are spiritually happy, because
- 36:06they hope for from God what others do
- 36:08not. The wicked, the criminal, and the
- 36:10disbeliever—I want to say, yes,
- 36:12excellent, Israa—this laziness comes
- 36:14to you from Satan. It comes from Satan,
- 36:17so your mere feeling that this laziness
- 36:19is from Satan makes you alert against
- 36:21laziness; you hate it because you know
- 36:23it's coming to you from your enemy,
- 36:25Satan. Who never loves any good for you
- 36:27. So this makes you provoked. Whenever
- 36:29you get lazy, you say, "By God, I will
- 36:30defy Satan.""By God, I will get up." So
- 36:32you remember Allah always. And you get
- 36:33up to perform ablution when you feel
- 36:35lazy. Or pray, in spite of Satan, to
- 36:37become active. Alright. So these are
- 36:40among the rules that keep me alert
- 36:41against laziness. Beautiful rules. God,
- 36:45tomorrow. Tomorrow, the exhaustion will
- 36:48go away, and the reward will remain.
- 36:50Tomorrow, the exhaustion goes away, and
- 36:52the reward remains. A very important
- 36:55rule. Apply it in your life. I want to
- 36:57ask you a question, and answer it. Last
- 37:01Ramadan, last Ramadan, are your legs
- 37:03still? The people who prayed Tahajjud
- 37:07for two or three parts [of the Quran],
- 37:08the girls who prayed Tahajjud for two
- 37:10or three parts and their legs were
- 37:11hurting them, and they kept tossing and
- 37:13turning their legs from the intensity
- 37:14of the fatigue, right? Where is the
- 37:17fatigue now? Do your legs still hurt,
- 37:21or has it become a beautiful memory of
- 37:24prayer? The fatigue is gone; the
- 37:27fatigue is gone, okay. Fasting Ramadan,
- 37:30are you still, still, still thirsty or?
- 37:34I remember fasting Ramadan and I am
- 37:35happy that, thank God, the fasting of
- 37:37Ramadan leaves behind only beautiful
- 37:39memories, think the opposite. Now,
- 37:42let's come here. Whoever was lazy to
- 37:43pray, whoever was lazy in Ramadan and
- 37:45didn't pray, what? Didn't finish the
- 37:48Quran now. Is the beauty of that
- 37:50laziness still lingering? Or is it
- 37:53regret, pain, and heartache that
- 37:55remains? Imagine, this is while we are
- 37:58still in this world. All of this you
- 37:59are feeling is while we are in this
- 38:00world, I mean. There is fatigue gone,
- 38:02while I am still in this world. Then,
- 38:04when I set foot in Paradise, with what
- 38:06memory will I recall these things?
- 38:09Nothing will remain but its beauty, and
- 38:11the fatigue is gone. That is why when
- 38:13the people of Paradise enter it, what
- 38:14do they say? "Praise be to Allah, Who,"
- 38:16what? "Praise be to Allah, Who has
- 38:18removed from us all sorrow." Oh, how
- 38:20wonderful, for our Lord is
- 38:21Oft-Forgiving, Most Appreciative, who
- 38:23has settled us in the Home of Eternity
- 38:24out of His grace. "No toil will touch
- 38:26us therein, nor will there touch us in
- 38:28it," what? "Fatigue." That is why when
- 38:31Gabriel descended to the Prophet, peace
- 38:33be upon him, he said to him, "This is
- 38:35Khadija coming to you.""So when she
- 38:37comes to you, greet her with peace from
- 38:39her Lord.""And give her tidings of a
- 38:40house in Paradise made of pearls.""No
- 38:43noise in it, nor any," what? "Fatigue."
- 38:45Why? Because Lady Khadija was the one
- 38:47who struggled the most with the Prophet
- 38:49, peace be upon him. So her reward, the
- 38:51mere tidings in this world, is
- 38:53beautiful on its own. Imagine someone
- 38:55telling you, "Receive tidings of a
- 38:56house in Paradise with no fatigue." The
- 38:58words themselves comforted me while I
- 39:00am tired now. What about when I enter
- 39:02it? What about when I dwell in it, will
- 39:04I remember the fatigue of...? The
- 39:06opposite. In Paradise, people recall
- 39:09their righteous deeds. And they say, "
- 39:11Thank God we worked hard.""And they
- 39:14will approach one another, questioning
- 39:15each other.""They will say,' Indeed, we
- 39:17were previously among our people,
- 39:19fearing. '""So Allah conferred favor
- 39:21upon us and protected us from the
- 39:22punishment of the Scorching Fire.""
- 39:24Indeed, we used to," what? "Supplicate
- 39:26to Him.""That He is the Benign, the
- 39:28Merciful." This rule makes me what?
- 39:30Always, when I receive the reward, the
- 39:32fatigue goes away. When I hold the
- 39:34certificate, I forget the fatigue of
- 39:36studying. When I take the prize, I
- 39:38forget the fatigue of all the effort.
- 39:40When I get promoted, when the reward
- 39:42comes. What about when Paradise comes?
- 39:45But whoever did not struggle, they will
- 39:46only have regrets. Just as Ibn al-Jawzi
- 39:49said. Alright. The fifth rule says,
- 39:52this one raises motivation a little bit
- 39:54. The reward is according to the level
- 39:55of the hardship. The reward is
- 39:57according to the level of the hardship.
- 39:59That is why the Prophet, peace be upon
- 40:01him, said this to Lady Aisha. When she
- 40:03was on Hajj and was struggling during
- 40:04the Hajj. He was telling her, "Your
- 40:06reward is only according to your
- 40:08fatigue.""Your reward is only according
- 40:10to your fatigue." Why do we say this
- 40:12rule? Because some people might not be
- 40:16lazy, but their time capacities are
- 40:19limited. Yes, well done, you are
- 40:23excellent, meaning what? Meaning a
- 40:25woman, for example, who has
- 40:26circumstances. And children, cooking,
- 40:29and studying; a mess. I mean, her life
- 40:31is complicated, so...But she is not
- 40:33lazy. But for her...what is available
- 40:35is praying for half an hour at night,
- 40:37and you cannot imagine how exhausted
- 40:39she is during that half hour. She is
- 40:41dying to sleep, dying to sleep, but she
- 40:43said, "No, I will pray for half an hour
- 40:45," or she fasted during the day while
- 40:47having responsibilities, studies,
- 40:48children, and errands to run. So,
- 40:50fasting for her is not the same as
- 40:52fasting for someone who is resting and
- 40:54in air conditioning. So, even though
- 40:57the act is the same. We give good
- 40:59tidings to the one whose act is limited
- 41:01in appearance. But for me, I struggle
- 41:03greatly with it. We tell them, "You
- 41:05will get a very great reward because
- 41:07the hardship is high." This keeps me
- 41:10from being lazy. Sometimes laziness
- 41:11comes from the hardship. You say, "By
- 41:13God, this matter is very difficult."
- 41:15But, isn't there a reward for the
- 41:17difficulty, everyone? Doesn't
- 41:18difficulty come with a special benefit?
- 41:20Is the easy matter the same as the
- 41:21difficult one in the sight of God? They
- 41:23tell you, "You are fasting because it
- 41:24is easy.""For me, fasting is difficult.
- 41:25" Well. That difficulty is actually the
- 41:27good part. Exactly. Is the one who
- 41:30fasts in the summer the same as the one
- 41:31who fasts in the winter? That is why in
- 41:34the Hadith, God wrote what...That God
- 41:37has ordained upon Himself that whoever
- 41:39makes himself thirsty on a hot day, God
- 41:41will quench his thirst on the Day of
- 41:43Thirst. That God has decreed upon
- 41:46Himself that whoever makes himself
- 41:47thirsty on a hot day, God will quench
- 41:49his thirst on the Day of...the Day of
- 41:50Thirst. Exactly. So, the one who fasts
- 41:53in the summer—some girls are lazy
- 41:54about fasting in the summer. They tell
- 41:56you, "No, I don't fast in the summer, I
- 41:57only fast in the winter." Why is that
- 41:59laziness? They say, "No, the heat." But
- 42:01that is the real work, everyone. Some
- 42:03of the predecessors used to seek out
- 42:05summer days for fasting. Meaning they
- 42:07focused on fasting in the summer even
- 42:08more than in the winter. Why? Because
- 42:10the reward is proportional to the
- 42:11hardship. These are rules. Okay,
- 42:13weapons of confrontation—let's move
- 42:16on to another topic. These were just
- 42:18psychological rules. As I face laziness
- 42:20, I establish the foundations. I want
- 42:22to attack now. Yes. Let's get into it.
- 42:24Go ahead. The weapons; the first weapon
- 42:27is "You have no one but God." Look at
- 42:29what the Hadith says. Yes. What does
- 42:35the Hadith say about the "vile soul"?
- 42:38There is, there is...it's over now.
- 42:39There is something in their soul, I
- 42:40mean. Surely, the soul, the more it...
- 42:42Neglects, it gets a sort of...it
- 42:43becomes tainted by that sin. What does
- 42:48the Hadith say? "O God, give our souls
- 42:50their righteousness.""And purify them,
- 42:52for You are the best to purify them;
- 42:54You are their Guardian and Master." And
- 42:56what did the Prophet, peace be upon him
- 42:58, say? "O God, guide us to the best of
- 43:00characters, for none guides to the best
- 43:02of them except You." Therefore, the one
- 43:05who will get me out of laziness is God.
- 43:08This must be a rule we rely on, so the
- 43:10first thing in anything in our lives is
- 43:12seeking refuge in God, everyone. Any
- 43:14plan that does not have "seeking help
- 43:16from God" as its first step is a plan
- 43:18that failed from its inception. Write
- 43:21down this sentence, everyone. Make this
- 43:23a rule in your lives: any plan that
- 43:24doesn't start by seeking help from God
- 43:26and acknowledging your need for Him is
- 43:28a plan that has failed from the start.
- 43:29Even if it is completed, it will be
- 43:31done while God has left you to your own
- 43:33devices, and you will see neither
- 43:34blessing, nor success, nor anything
- 43:36else. The first plan of Prophet Joseph
- 43:38was when he said, "I seek refuge in God
- 43:40," then he continued, "for He is my
- 43:41Lord, who has made my residence good."
- 43:43If you do not turn away their plot from
- 43:45me, I might incline toward them and be
- 43:47of the ignorant. So, the first thing is
- 43:48: you want to pray? You want to wear
- 43:50the hijab? You want to dress more
- 43:52modestly? You want to wear an abaya?
- 43:53You want to memorize the Quran? You
- 43:55want to overcome laziness? You want to
- 43:57quit pornography? You want to leave a
- 43:59forbidden relationship? Turn to God
- 44:02first. And after that, come the steps,
- 44:04the plans, and the things we talk about
- 44:06. Generally, the first thing is making
- 44:07constant supplication. As we said, look
- 44:09, there is a supplication we took today
- 44:11: "O God, I seek refuge in You from
- 44:12inability and laziness." There is
- 44:14another one we always say in the
- 44:15morning and evening dhikr. We don't pay
- 44:17attention to it. You know it while you
- 44:19are saying it. You say it, but you
- 44:21don't really notice it. I don't
- 44:23understand. We don't realize it while
- 44:24we are saying it in. The morning and
- 44:25evening dhikr. Listen to this sentence,
- 44:27you will remember it: "My Lord, I seek
- 44:28refuge in You from laziness and the
- 44:30evil of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge
- 44:31in You from the torment of the Fire and
- 44:33the torment of the grave. O God, I ask
- 44:35You for wellness in this world and the
- 44:36hereafter. O God, I ask You for pardon
- 44:38and wellness in my religion, my worldly
- 44:39life, my family, and my wealth." Right?
- 44:41Don't you say this every day in the
- 44:43morning and evening dhikr? Those who
- 44:44say it, have you not noticed that you
- 44:46are seeking refuge in God from laziness
- 44:47every day, morning and evening? But we
- 44:49say the dhikr without focusing. We say
- 44:51it without being mindful of it. In any
- 44:53morning and evening dhikr book, you
- 44:55will find it. The "evil of old age" is
- 44:56when someone grows old and becomes
- 44:57afflicted with illnesses that make them
- 44:58return to the state of a child. Being
- 45:00carried and moved around—that is
- 45:02surely something no one likes. Laziness
- 45:05. So, while we are saying the morning
- 45:07dhikr, focus on this in particular and.
- 45:10Emphasize it and bring your hearts into
- 45:13it. What is the second weapon?
- 45:17Certainty in the reward. What does
- 45:19certainty in the reward mean, everyone?
- 45:21Certainty in the reward, maybe we got
- 45:24an idea about it when I told you about
- 45:26the man who came to you and said: "Yes,
- 45:29excellent, well done." The man who came
- 45:32to you and said: "Work for one hour at
- 45:34home, Abeer, or Israa, and you will get
- 45:36a million pounds." And you know that
- 45:38this man is honest. This man is wealthy
- 45:40. This man does not lie. This man will
- 45:42truly give me a million pounds. There
- 45:44is no doubt about this matter. Okay.
- 45:46There is his house, there is the work,
- 45:48there is the hour, and the man's word
- 45:50is final. So this is called, what is it
- 45:52called, everyone? It is called
- 45:54certainty. What made Israa work hard?
- 45:59Because she is sure. She knows. If this
- 46:01man were a liar, she would be worried.
- 46:02If she knew that this man wasn't
- 46:04wealthy, but poor, she would be worried
- 46:05. But he is truthful, he does not break
- 46:08his promise, he is wealthy, he is rich,
- 46:11okay. So this transformed for me into
- 46:14certainty in that promise. And because
- 46:17of that certainty, I shifted into
- 46:19activity. Since I am sure, I have
- 46:22certainty. So it turned into a state of
- 46:25activity. What I want to say is that to
- 46:28face laziness, you need certainty in
- 46:30the reward. That’s why I’m saying,
- 46:31to illustrate certainty for you, I’ll
- 46:33give you an example. Certainty that
- 46:34matches the certainty you have
- 46:35regarding what you hold in your hands
- 46:37of this world. I mean, just like you
- 46:39are sure that you are seeing me right
- 46:41now. You must have certainty in what
- 46:43God has prepared for His believing
- 46:45servants. Just like you are sure that
- 46:47you are seeing me right now, okay? That
- 46:51God said that God does not break His
- 46:52promise, and God is self-sufficient,
- 46:54glory be to Him. Okay, and God said in
- 47:01the Quran, "Is he whom We have promised
- 47:04a good promise, which he shall meet, [
- 47:06like him...]"? The phrase "which he
- 47:10shall meet" reassures you that you will
- 47:13indeed receive that reward. But our
- 47:15problem is that we lack that certainty.
- 47:17I mean, for example, I will give you an
- 47:19example based on something realistic. I
- 47:20came and told you now. What will you
- 47:23say to me? What will you reply to me? I
- 47:25told you all now. Folks, there is
- 47:28someone, let me use myself as an
- 47:31example. You trust Alaa Hamed, for
- 47:33instance. I don’t lie, for example,
- 47:35okay, and. I said to you, Ms. Asmaa,
- 47:38and I said to Mostafa, for example.
- 47:41Mostafa, I will come to you outside
- 47:44your house at 4:00 AM, okay. Mostafa,
- 47:48if you come down to me, if you come
- 47:50down, Mostafa, I swear to God I will
- 47:52give you 1000 pounds, for instance. And
- 47:55I told him that. He deals with Alaa
- 47:56Hamed, he knows Alaa Hamed, right. I
- 47:59told him if at 4:00 AM I found you in
- 48:00front of your door, I will give you
- 48:021000 pounds. Question: Is there any
- 48:05doubt that Mostafa? Will come down. Or
- 48:08I told him 10,000 pounds, let's make
- 48:10the number a bit bigger. Is it possible
- 48:14that Mostafa wouldn't come down? I
- 48:16think it’s impossible, impossible.
- 48:19And if someone did that with you,
- 48:22there’s no one, it's impossible. He
- 48:24might not even sleep. He might be
- 48:26afraid, out of fear that he might miss
- 48:28me. Okay. He will fear missing me for
- 48:31several reasons. First, that money is
- 48:34definitely influential. And Alaa
- 48:36himself, who he feels he cannot let
- 48:39down. That’s Eng. Alaa, I love him so
- 48:42much and I can’t let him down. Okay.
- 48:45So even if there is no money—I told
- 48:46you I’m coming to you without money
- 48:47—you would come down for me. Right,
- 48:49let alone if I tempted you with large
- 48:51sums of money. Okay, so what, what made
- 48:54me? What made one come down so sure? He
- 48:57might not sleep. He might tell 100,000
- 48:59people. He might tell his mom to wake
- 49:00him up. He sets 60 alarms. And at the
- 49:02first alarm, he jumps up. I am afraid
- 49:04of being late. And he goes down early,
- 49:06saying maybe he will come early or
- 49:08something. Certainty. Well, leave this
- 49:11example aside. And we say the Messenger
- 49:15of God, peace be upon him, said: "The
- 49:17two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the
- 49:20world and what is in it." What is the
- 49:24difference between this sentence and
- 49:26Alaa Hamed saying I will give you 1000
- 49:29pounds if you come down? The second
- 49:31sentence is much stronger. And the one
- 49:34who said it is much more truthful, and
- 49:36the one who owns it is richer. And more
- 49:38loving, and more generous, and
- 49:40everything. Why was I able to go down
- 49:42for that appointment? And why am I
- 49:44unable to wake up to pray Fajr? Because
- 49:47there is a problem with visualizing the
- 49:49reward, with the certainty of it. And
- 49:52that certainty needs what? The constant
- 49:53treatment is to read a lot about the
- 49:55reward. Spend time with people who
- 49:58apply this, and listen to many warnings
- 50:00in this regard. Until my certainty in
- 50:03the reward increases. At that point, I
- 50:06spring up, I jump, I leap to pray Fajr.
- 50:10I leap to pray Qiyam al-Layl, because I
- 50:12know the reward. And the opposite
- 50:15regarding punishment; you fear
- 50:16immodesty greatly because you read much
- 50:18about the punishment. Therefore, we
- 50:20refer to Al-Hanbali; what does he say?
- 50:22An important word, he says a sentence
- 50:25that feels like poetry: "He who does
- 50:27not know the reward of deeds finds them
- 50:29burdensome in all cases," again. "He
- 50:32who does not know the reward of deeds
- 50:35finds them burdensome in all cases." So
- 50:37it is as if he is telling you to read a
- 50:39lot. About the virtue of deeds. So, I
- 50:41want to have a daily portion from the
- 50:43book "Riyad as-Salihin." I want to have
- 50:45a daily portion, an assignment, from
- 50:46the book "At-Targhib wa at-Tarhib."
- 50:48Because this is what tells me what the
- 50:50reward for what I am doing is. I want
- 50:52to always go on YouTube. And type "
- 50:54virtue of Qiyam al-Layl.""Virtue of
- 50:56Fajr prayer.""Punishment for immodesty.
- 50:58""Punishment for backbiting." Because
- 51:00these things remind me. They increase
- 51:02my certainty. And recalling the reward
- 51:04or punishment makes me act when the
- 51:06time for action comes. Do we understand
- 51:08? And Ibn al-Jawzi says a beautiful
- 51:10phrase. He says: "Whoever envisions the
- 51:12reward, the deed becomes light for him.
- 51:14" A beautiful rule. "Whoever envisions
- 51:16the reward, the deed becomes light for
- 51:18him." Among the important rules, these
- 51:21are the weapons of confrontation. A
- 51:22practical weapon: having a clear goal
- 51:25with a clear plan. Let's say the
- 51:29absence of a goal, I mean, it should
- 51:31make you the target for the devil.
- 51:34Among the things that can make a person
- 51:37have enthusiasm, okay, a book in? The
- 51:40book "Riyad as-Salihin," everyone. It
- 51:41contains all the virtues of deeds. The
- 51:43book "Riyad as-Salihin" is well-known.
- 51:45And there is another book called "
- 51:46At-Targhib wa at-Tarhib." But when you
- 51:48download it, download the book called "
- 51:50Sahih At-Targhib wa at-Tarhib." Because
- 51:52"At-Targhib wa at-Tarhib" contains weak
- 51:53Hadiths. There is a book by Imam
- 51:55Al-Albani called "Sahih At-Targhib wa
- 51:57at-Tarhib." He collected in it only the
- 51:59authentic Hadiths from "At-Targhib wa
- 52:01at-Tarhib." Got it? Yes, excellent,
- 52:05this sentence is very important. If you
- 52:08don't have a goal, you are the goal. If
- 52:13you do not occupy your self with the
- 52:14truth, it will occupy you with
- 52:15falsehood. So, there might be someone
- 52:17who has enthusiasm. Meaning, perhaps
- 52:19among you is a girl who has energy,
- 52:21enthusiasm, and activity, and she will
- 52:22conquer the world. But she wakes up in
- 52:24the morning and doesn't know where to
- 52:25direct it. Where is this enthusiasm? I
- 52:27mean, I have energy. But what are we
- 52:28going to do now? I don't know what.
- 52:31Come on, where should we let this
- 52:32energy out? I don't know, I am not. I
- 52:33don't have a specific thing I want to
- 52:36do, so. Ah, let's just pass the time
- 52:38then. So where will this energy go?
- 52:40Even though there is enthusiasm and no
- 52:42laziness. But where did this energy go?
- 52:44Well, let's just watch anything. We go
- 52:45on YouTube and spend an hour scrolling.
- 52:47And we spend two hours scrolling on
- 52:49Facebook. And we go watch cooking shows
- 52:51for three hours. And we go into the
- 52:53kitchen and do anything useless. I
- 52:55don't have anything, I can't find
- 52:57anything, I don't know. And I am
- 52:58talking about permissible things. Watch
- 53:00out if the devil gets to you and says,
- 53:02why don't we just sit and chat and
- 53:03gossip with girls and stuff. And
- 53:05backbiting and gossiping, and talking
- 53:06about this person and that person. I
- 53:07have nothing else to do anyway. I don't
- 53:09have the things I need to confront this
- 53:11with. Which is having a clear goal and
- 53:14a clear plan. You guys, you can't wake
- 53:16up in the morning not knowing what
- 53:17you're going to do. We must, and I am
- 53:19building on what I said before. Didn't
- 53:22we say there is something called a "
- 53:23life project"? That life project is a
- 53:25big title. So, what is under that
- 53:27project? There is a plan, and under
- 53:29that plan...There is what? There are
- 53:31goals. There are long-term goals. And
- 53:34there are short-term goals. Those
- 53:35short-term goals...That long-term goal,
- 53:38I break it down into smaller and
- 53:39smaller goals. Like, for example, I
- 53:41want to be a student of knowledge. Good
- 53:43. What is this? This is the umbrella.
- 53:45This is the big canopy. This is my
- 53:47project. Okay. So I want, for example,
- 53:49I have a plan. I want to finish a
- 53:51jurisprudence book. So this is the
- 53:53long-term goal. Good. A jurisprudence
- 53:55book, which one? The "Simplified
- 53:57Jurisprudence"(Al-Fiqh al-Muyassar)
- 53:57book. Good. This "Simplified
- 53:59Jurisprudence" book, for instance. I'm
- 54:01listening to, say, Alaa Hamed. I will
- 54:02go and listen to Alaa Hamed's
- 54:03explanation. How long is his
- 54:05explanation? It's 72 lessons. Good.
- 54:09Well, based on my time and my
- 54:11circumstances. And stuff, I can listen
- 54:15for half an hour every day, half a
- 54:17lesson for example every day, good, so
- 54:20there I have started breaking down the
- 54:23big goal into small goals. So how long
- 54:25will it take me to finish it? If the
- 54:27lesson is an hour, then the lesson
- 54:28takes me two days. So I will finish it
- 54:30in 140 days. Perfect, 140 days it must
- 54:35be. The "Simplified Jurisprudence" book
- 54:36will be finished. So I wake up in the
- 54:39morning knowing that I have a part of
- 54:40my goals, the huge goal of being a
- 54:42student of knowledge, that...It was
- 54:43broken down into a long-term goal,
- 54:44which is the "Simplified Jurisprudence"
- 54:46as a start. And I broke this goal down
- 54:50into slightly smaller goals. I set
- 54:52specific hours with a specific amount.
- 54:54Why did I say that? Because I have
- 54:55another book. I have a similar book.
- 54:57There is a jurisprudence book, a course
- 54:59, and medicine. And there is Quran
- 55:01memorization and Quran review. And
- 55:03there is Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer).
- 55:04I still have what? I'm not just
- 55:06jurisprudence. A student of knowledge
- 55:07will do many things. So I have this one
- 55:09, a book. And this one, a course. And
- 55:11this one, Qiyam al-Layl. And here, two
- 55:12parts (juz') to be reviewed. And there
- 55:14is a quarter (rub ') to be memorized.
- 55:15It's a big story. So I have everything
- 55:18planned. I have set when I will finish.
- 55:20And I have set when I will finish the
- 55:22foundations. And the jurisprudence,
- 55:23when. And the creed (aqeedah), when.
- 55:25And I have set the night prayer routine
- 55:26and its time. And I have set how often
- 55:29I keep ties of kinship. And how much
- 55:31time it takes me. Everything is
- 55:32specified. Housework. Helping my mother
- 55:35...My children, I have set time for
- 55:38them. My day is full with a clear plan.
- 55:41Clear goals. My time is packed. But
- 55:45it's not a plan that's too cramped so
- 55:46it doesn't fail. Some people set a
- 55:48perfect plan and this...One of the
- 55:50downsides of planning, everyone. For
- 55:52instance, what do I have? How much of
- 55:54the day do I have? I sleep for eight
- 55:56hours, great. And how many hours left
- 55:58in the day? 16; filling all 16 hours is
- 56:00wrong. It’s impossible. Nobody does
- 56:03that, guys. You have to leave a little
- 56:05breathing room. Leave some room.
- 56:08Meaning, of the 16 hours, fill 12 and
- 56:11keep four hours for what? In case
- 56:13things go wrong, then what? Well, what
- 56:15if they don't? Then I have four extra
- 56:17hours. I’ll do something extra with
- 56:19them. Have what's called "extra
- 56:20activities." If there is extra time,
- 56:23perfect. But if there isn't any extra
- 56:26time, that's okay. Then these four
- 56:28hours are my reserve. So if the 12
- 56:30hours fail, I don’t get frustrated.
- 56:32If the 12 hours succeed, great. I do an
- 56:35extra activity here. I keep a book
- 56:37I’ve wanted to read, to relax and
- 56:39read when I'm free. Or listen to a
- 56:43lecture or a nice podcast I saved for
- 56:45downtime. Are you all with me or not?
- 56:50Clear. When I work with a goal and a
- 56:52plan, I’m active. But if there’s no
- 56:55plan, things are chaotic. Even if I
- 56:58have the energy, drive, and activity,
- 57:00where will you direct them? Everything
- 57:02is a mess. There’s nothing in place.
- 57:04You don't even know what you want to do
- 57:05. One of the weapons to face this: what
- 57:09if I have the plan and everything, but
- 57:11I got bored? I got bored; I do the same
- 57:13thing every day, I got sick of it.
- 57:15Things you break boredom with, guys,
- 57:16actually bring laziness. Boredom turns
- 57:19into laziness. I might have a plan and
- 57:20goals and know everything, but I do the
- 57:22same thing daily, so I got fed up. So I
- 57:24reached a day where I just can't. I
- 57:26can't, I can't look at the book today.
- 57:28I can't, I can't study today. I can't,
- 57:30so it will turn into what? Into
- 57:32laziness. No, I have something called "
- 57:34diversifying when bored." I make
- 57:36something called alternative plans. So,
- 57:37am I lazy today? Well, today for
- 57:39example...Listen to the lesson today.
- 57:43Alright, today I'll make a few calls I
- 57:46was postponing for free time. For
- 57:49example, call my uncle to say hello.
- 57:51Call, I wanted to visit someone, but
- 57:54was putting it off for when I'm free.
- 57:56Fine, today I’ll put that visit in
- 57:58place of this to break the boredom and
- 58:00diversify, and not leave myself to
- 58:01Satan. So what happens to me when I'm
- 58:04bored and can't do it? I diversify; I
- 58:07do another task that keeps me occupied.
- 58:10Yet, I haven't just rested at the same
- 58:12time. I change my mood or do something
- 58:14permissible. Alright, today I’ll go
- 58:17out, go for a walk by the sea. Or,
- 58:20there was this restaurant I wanted to
- 58:22try. Today I’ll treat myself, go eat
- 58:25a nice meal, and come back with renewed
- 58:27energy; no harm in that. Alright,
- 58:31another weapon for this is gradation.
- 58:37Yes, excellent Israa, that's right.
- 58:39This is actually quite useful. People
- 58:41don't feel the value of this, they
- 58:42think it's just pampering. No, breaking
- 58:43the boredom really makes a big
- 58:45difference, really. Once you feel you
- 58:48really can't go on, make a quick change
- 58:50, a rapid shift; you'll find yourself
- 58:53refreshed and back on track. But if you
- 58:56force yourself, insisting "I must
- 58:58finish" and so on, you’ll find
- 58:59yourself burning out. We must break the
- 59:02boredom. One of the weapons of
- 59:05confrontation. Gradualism;
- 59:06understanding the law of gradual steps.
- 59:08Understand that no one reaches their
- 59:10goal quickly. We will talk about this
- 59:12in the "obstacles," so let's save it
- 59:14for then. We'll return to this point—
- 59:16it's an important note to set as a life
- 59:18rule. The prayer we mentioned won't
- 59:20work. Prayers that are just dull, empty
- 59:22words—no, those don't work, folks.
- 59:25When I pray to God and seek refuge in
- 59:27Him from laziness, dull words won't do.
- 59:29I must pray the prayer of the
- 59:30distressed. The prayer of someone
- 59:32drowning, okay? The prayer of someone
- 59:34lost. The prayer of someone dying, okay
- 59:36? What should we do? Who answers the
- 59:37distressed when they call upon Him?
- 59:39It’s a cry for help, folks. "When you
- 59:40sought help of your Lord and He
- 59:42answered you." A call; "And Noah, when
- 59:44he called to his Lord.""And Dhun-Nun,
- 59:47when he called out from the darkness."
- 59:50I want you to pray with your heart;
- 59:52this is what will truly work for you.
- 59:55Iman, this is the first thing we took
- 59:57in the first lecture of "The Disease
- 59:58and the Cure." Let's review it if
- 1:00:01anyone wants to. Anyway, you have
- 1:00:03surely seen this screen before; perhaps
- 1:00:05you've taken this "SMART" art with
- 1:00:07someone before. It's on the way, but
- 1:00:09it's not exactly our main goal. But we
- 1:00:12say it because it is mentioned a lot in
- 1:00:15human development courses. In general,
- 1:00:18these are traits of a goal. Whenever
- 1:00:21people talk about goals, they say your
- 1:00:23goal must be "SMART"—very often.
- 1:00:25That’s why I don't like to be
- 1:00:27repetitive. But since it came up. While
- 1:00:30we're at it, we’ll mention it.
- 1:00:31Perhaps someone is hearing it for the
- 1:00:32first time. Or you can go and explore
- 1:00:35it further in general. It’s a term we
- 1:00:38benefit from, just like some other
- 1:00:39theories. Even if it's in our field, it
- 1:00:41is present. And we can derive it from
- 1:00:44our field, it's fine. I won't take the
- 1:00:46whole sentence. The word "SMART" means
- 1:00:48intelligent. But it's not really a
- 1:00:49sentence. These are letters
- 1:00:51representing an abbreviation. I am
- 1:00:53interested in the S, M, and T at least.
- 1:00:56The S is "Specific," it says specific.
- 1:00:58Just like we took in the SWOT analysis.
- 1:01:00Specific means defined. I want to know
- 1:01:03what I want to do. I want to finish the
- 1:01:06book "Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar." Done, that
- 1:01:08is clear. I want to complete a Quran
- 1:01:10recitation. I want to finish. An
- 1:01:12English course, or I want to learn
- 1:01:16sewing. A clear goal, a clear goal. And
- 1:01:23it should be realistic. As they say in
- 1:01:25the R, realistic. It doesn't make sense
- 1:01:29, for example, for a girl to have a
- 1:01:32goal of becoming a weightlifter. That
- 1:01:36is a goal that just doesn't work. I
- 1:01:38mean, ignore all this nonsense we see.
- 1:01:42It doesn't work, folks. Let me ask you
- 1:01:44a question, based on the previous
- 1:01:46lectures, so you can answer me. Why?
- 1:01:48Why can't one of a girl's goals, for
- 1:01:50instance, be to be a weightlifter?
- 1:01:53Answer me based on your understanding
- 1:01:54of all the previous lectures. From what
- 1:01:59? Bravo, you summed it up. Because this
- 1:02:04conflicts with the very high standard I
- 1:02:05live under, which is what? What is this
- 1:02:09high standard I live under? That you
- 1:02:11cannot set a goal that conflicts with
- 1:02:12it. Yes, servitude and seeking God's
- 1:02:15pleasure. No, it is immediately
- 1:02:16rejected. For me, that is fine. For
- 1:02:18example, it's not allowed. Why can't a
- 1:02:20girl's goal be? That she becomes a
- 1:02:21world-class swimmer. Because. This
- 1:02:24contradicts the five essentials. It
- 1:02:26conflicts with preserving the religion.
- 1:02:29Once it's out, then. Then this. For me,
- 1:02:31it is not realistic. For me personally;
- 1:02:34for the West, there wouldn't be a
- 1:02:36problem. But me. I am a Muslim, folks.
- 1:02:38Yes, I have other standards. It is not
- 1:02:41okay for a girl's goal to be an artist.
- 1:02:44It is not okay for a girl's goal to be
- 1:02:46a swimmer. These are rejected goals.
- 1:02:49Why rejected? It conflicts with my
- 1:02:51religion. End of discussion, okay? So,
- 1:02:55for me, it's not realistic, not
- 1:02:56applicable, not achievable. Alright,
- 1:02:59we've moved past that. It says the goal
- 1:03:02should be measurable; that's the "M."
- 1:03:03Measurable means it can be measured.
- 1:03:05How much will you finish and in how
- 1:03:07long? You can't just tell me "I'll
- 1:03:08finish" and leave it at that. You can't
- 1:03:10tell me "I'll memorize the Quran" and
- 1:03:11leave it at that. You have to tell me
- 1:03:12how much. When? In two years? In a year
- 1:03:15? Okay, what will we do daily? We will
- 1:03:19do such and such. As soon as you tell
- 1:03:21me what we'll do daily, you've arrived.
- 1:03:23Because we have become measurable. I
- 1:03:24can hold you accountable at the end of
- 1:03:26the day to see if you did it or not. Or
- 1:03:28after a month, I can ask what we've
- 1:03:29reached; you can't just say, "I started
- 1:03:31memorizing the Quran." And we didn't
- 1:03:33set any deadlines. And we come a month
- 1:03:35later and I ask, "What did you memorize
- 1:03:36?" You tell me, "I memorized a quarter
- 1:03:38of a Juz." Is that good or bad? I can't
- 1:03:41evaluate it. Because I didn't set a
- 1:03:43metric to begin with. But if you told
- 1:03:45me from the start, "My plan is to
- 1:03:46memorize one page a day." And you come
- 1:03:48after a month and say you memorized a
- 1:03:49quarter. I'll tell you, "No." We are
- 1:03:50wasting time here. According to your
- 1:03:52words, you were to memorize a page a
- 1:03:53day. So I should have 30 pages by now.
- 1:03:56It became measurable; I can hold you
- 1:03:57accountable. Otherwise, what would I
- 1:03:59hold you accountable based on? Okay.
- 1:04:01And the "T" stands for timed. Timed
- 1:04:03means time-bound and measurable. And
- 1:04:06timed means a set timeframe from start
- 1:04:07to finish. When will I start? When will
- 1:04:09I finish? So any goal I set in my life
- 1:04:12must be SMART. It must be clear. It
- 1:04:15must be measurable. It must be
- 1:04:16time-bound. It must be realistic. It
- 1:04:18must be applicable. That's just a
- 1:04:20general guideline. Okay. Now, let's go
- 1:04:24back to laziness. Let's try to attack
- 1:04:26it from another angle. What are the
- 1:04:29disasters of laziness? One of the
- 1:04:31disasters of laziness is that it wastes
- 1:04:33the most precious thing you own: time.
- 1:04:36Folks, what is the most precious thing?
- 1:04:37That we own, any answer other than time
- 1:04:40? Then there is a time problem. Why?
- 1:04:42Because in the end, I am trading with
- 1:04:44God. Okay, what am I trading with God?
- 1:04:49With time. Time. My capital in this
- 1:04:55life is time. This time is what I can
- 1:04:58use to pray. And I can fast during it.
- 1:05:00I can memorize the Quran. And I can
- 1:05:01learn during it. And I can benefit
- 1:05:03others. No time, no anything. The most
- 1:05:07destructive thing. And wastes your time
- 1:05:10. Anyone who takes your time, folks,
- 1:05:12takes your most precious possession.
- 1:05:14Your most precious possession is time.
- 1:05:18Be stingy with your time. Be stingy
- 1:05:21with your time. Don't let anyone waste
- 1:05:23your time. This is our capital, folks.
- 1:05:25Whenever an hour is wasted, it's gone
- 1:05:27from me. It's like someone who has, say
- 1:05:29, a billion. A billion pounds, 1,000
- 1:05:32million. And someone stole a million
- 1:05:35from him, would he be happy? Certainly
- 1:05:37not happy. That is exactly how I should
- 1:05:39feel when someone takes an hour from me
- 1:05:40. Or wastes my time. I feel helpless, I
- 1:05:43can't stand it. They took my capital,
- 1:05:45they took my time. So laziness eats
- 1:05:49into time. Meaning, just being lazy. I
- 1:05:51slept because of laziness; instead of
- 1:05:53eight hours, I slept ten. Laziness took
- 1:05:56two hours from me. Instead of finishing
- 1:05:58in one hour, I finished in four hours.
- 1:06:00It took three hours from me due to
- 1:06:02laziness. Due to laziness, I stayed
- 1:06:05sitting on the beanbag, staring at the
- 1:06:07TV for four hours. Laziness took from
- 1:06:09me. Four hours; this thief is robbing
- 1:06:12me, stealing my most precious
- 1:06:13possession, time. Oh, the phone, this
- 1:06:17thief, the phone is robbing me, wasting
- 1:06:20my hours, folks, can you imagine what a
- 1:06:22minute can do for you? Do you know—
- 1:06:25let me give you an example of what you
- 1:06:27can do in a minute; you can seek
- 1:06:29forgiveness 100 times in a minute. 100
- 1:06:32requests for forgiveness in a minute.
- 1:06:35In a minute, I can recite "Qul Huwa
- 1:06:36Allahu Ahad" 10 times. Whoever recites
- 1:06:39Al-Ikhlas 10 times, Allah builds him a
- 1:06:42house in Paradise. So in a minute, I
- 1:06:45can build a house in Paradise. Imagine
- 1:06:48what a minute is worth. Glory to the
- 1:06:50one who says, "Glory." Allah and His
- 1:06:52praise; a palm tree is planted for him
- 1:06:53in Paradise. I can say it 20 times in a
- 1:06:55minute. 20 palm trees in Paradise in a
- 1:06:59minute. Can you imagine what a minute
- 1:07:01is worth? Uh, I can pray two rak'ahs in
- 1:07:04two minutes, for example. One rak'ah in
- 1:07:07a minute. And the Prophet, peace be
- 1:07:09upon him, said, walking past a grave.
- 1:07:11He said that two rak'ahs that you deem
- 1:07:13insignificant and perform, the ones you
- 1:07:14pray quickly. In his balance, they are
- 1:07:17dearer to him than your entire world.
- 1:07:20Don't let anyone waste your time. When
- 1:07:22your life passes, that's not a happy
- 1:07:24thing. It's something that scares you.
- 1:07:26That's why I sometimes wonder about
- 1:07:28people who celebrate the passing of age
- 1:07:30. I mean, something like a birthday,
- 1:07:32for example. Birthdays, folks, are a
- 1:07:35very strange concept. I don't know if
- 1:07:39you understand it like I do or not. Are
- 1:07:41we even—regardless of the ruling?
- 1:07:43Meaning, is it an innovation or not an
- 1:07:45innovation? Is it permissible? I'm just
- 1:07:47thinking out loud here. Any sane person
- 1:07:49, any logical person. What is the
- 1:07:52happiness in having a year of my life
- 1:07:54pass by? I mean, why am I happy? Where
- 1:07:59is the happiness? I want to understand
- 1:08:01something. I mean, someone who had 60
- 1:08:04million pounds. They had 60 million
- 1:08:07pounds. A million people went and threw
- 1:08:10a party. What do you think? People
- 1:08:14should actually be afraid, because in
- 1:08:16reality, your life hasn't increased; it
- 1:08:18has decreased. It has decreased because
- 1:08:20you are ultimately getting closer to a
- 1:08:22fixed point—you are approaching the
- 1:08:24point of death. So, in truth, you've
- 1:08:27just gotten a year closer to the date
- 1:08:28that will not change; they cannot delay
- 1:08:30it an hour, nor can they advance it. I
- 1:08:32don't see any reason for someone to
- 1:08:34throw a party, really. And don't tell
- 1:08:37me, "Maybe I achieved things this year.
- 1:08:38" Fine, but no one is truly satisfied
- 1:08:41with themselves; no matter what, a
- 1:08:42person still holds themselves
- 1:08:44accountable and feels they have fallen
- 1:08:46short. I’m not saying cry and grieve.
- 1:08:51But it just means we won't throw a
- 1:08:53party. I mean, it's not to that extent.
- 1:08:55I’m saying I won't tell you to weep.
- 1:08:57But we won't throw one. A party? A
- 1:08:59party because a year passed in my life?
- 1:09:00No, people should hold themselves
- 1:09:02accountable. When a year passes, one
- 1:09:04should sit with themselves and reflect:
- 1:09:05"Was I good or not?" intending for the
- 1:09:07next year to be better than the last. I
- 1:09:09just don't understand where the
- 1:09:10happiness is in that. I mean, a Muslim
- 1:09:12should have a different mindset. Folks,
- 1:09:15are we just following the West blindly?
- 1:09:17What are you doing? Are you throwing
- 1:09:18birthday parties? "Let’s join you."
- 1:09:20But you, as a person, for you, this
- 1:09:21time...It's a waste. It's a disaster.
- 1:09:25For life to pass by, for you......is a
- 1:09:27calamity. But these people are secular;
- 1:09:29their heaven is this world, so the more
- 1:09:31they play, the happier they get. For me
- 1:09:34, this is a......big problem.
- 1:09:39Regardless, I just want to tell you...
- 1:09:41It's not our topic, just a fleeting
- 1:09:42side note. Just some thoughts. Yeah. So
- 1:09:47, time that is wasted is a disaster.
- 1:09:49And the calamity is laziness. It wastes
- 1:09:51your life. Your time—another calamity
- 1:09:53of laziness......is that it ruins your
- 1:09:55obligatory duties, voluntary acts, and
- 1:09:56spiritual ranks. Wasting obligatory
- 1:10:00duties—laziness will reach a point
- 1:10:03with me where......laziness will reach
- 1:10:10......a point where you'll miss the
- 1:10:14prayer itself. I'm not talking about
- 1:10:16the extreme case of missing Fajr; I'm
- 1:10:18talking about missing prayer entirely,
- 1:10:19or praying two prayers together. There
- 1:10:22are girls who combine prayers. Why?
- 1:10:24They say, "I was too lazy to pray."
- 1:10:26What does that even mean? I don't know.
- 1:10:29The Maghrib call to prayer happened, we
- 1:10:30sat down to eat and all that......and I
- 1:10:32stayed sitting there, feeling lazy,
- 1:10:33until I heard the Isha call. We have
- 1:10:35reached a disaster; the duty is ruined,
- 1:10:38the duty is gone. Fine, if the duty
- 1:10:43wasn't missed, we still have the
- 1:10:44voluntary acts. The ranks in Paradise
- 1:10:47that you are losing because of laziness
- 1:10:48. And wasting obligatory duties isn't
- 1:10:51just about missing the act itself. You
- 1:10:53might pray, but because of laziness,
- 1:10:56you pray half-heartedly. Praying while
- 1:10:59I’m, like, asleep, unable to stand.
- 1:11:02Or I read Quran without understanding a
- 1:11:04thing because of laziness, or I study
- 1:11:06without grasping anything because of
- 1:11:08laziness. So what have we done
- 1:11:09regarding that waste? Either the waste
- 1:11:11of performance, or the waste of the
- 1:11:12quality of performance. Among the
- 1:11:14disasters of laziness is being deprived
- 1:11:16during seasons of goodness. The lazy
- 1:11:18person. This person, folks, is the one
- 1:11:20most deprived during seasons of
- 1:11:21goodness. Of course, our friend comes
- 1:11:22to Ramadan—the lazy one. And he was
- 1:11:25already lazy. He was lazy back in
- 1:11:27Sha'ban. Then Ramadan arrives, and he's
- 1:11:28like, "Ramadan is here, let’s go!""
- 1:11:31I'll read ten parts of the Quran a day,
- 1:11:32and I'll do this and that." Do you
- 1:11:33think that from the very first day,
- 1:11:35he'll actually follow the plan, as
- 1:11:37usual? And this happens to all of us
- 1:11:39because we are lazy. It doesn't happen.
- 1:11:41As long as it's...Even though Ramadan
- 1:11:42has come, and although, and although.
- 1:11:44And I'm supposed to be more active.
- 1:11:45There is no one, folks. It's not a
- 1:11:46button. Whoever enters running is the
- 1:11:49one who will continue. But someone who
- 1:11:51is naturally lazy will discover they
- 1:11:53are lazy even during seasons of
- 1:11:54goodness. Lazy. And the fact that
- 1:11:57Ramadan came didn't change much in
- 1:11:58their performance. And the first ten
- 1:12:02days of Dhu al-Hijjah come, and they
- 1:12:03don't change anything either. Anything
- 1:12:05in performance, and Ramadan passes, and
- 1:12:06our friend regrets that laziness has
- 1:12:08become a trait in them; they can't
- 1:12:10benefit from the season of goodness.
- 1:12:13The person who is most deprived and in
- 1:12:15a great catastrophe is the one Gabriel
- 1:12:17(peace be upon him) prayed against,
- 1:12:19saying: "Whoever reaches Ramadan and is
- 1:12:21not forgiven, may Allah cast him far
- 1:12:23away. Say amen." And I said amen. He is
- 1:12:26exposed and threatened by Gabriel's
- 1:12:28prayer. Okay, and finally, the last
- 1:12:33slide so I don't keep you too long: the
- 1:12:35causes of laziness. One of the causes
- 1:12:38of laziness is long-term hope. A person
- 1:12:41feels, you know, the world is vast. And
- 1:12:44tomorrow, and God willing, it will be
- 1:12:47fine. And we have a lifetime left. And
- 1:12:49we will catch up. Long-term hope makes
- 1:12:52one forget the afterlife. Long-term
- 1:12:55hope is the thing that wastes a
- 1:12:56person's life the most. Folks, one of
- 1:12:59the things that helps you with this
- 1:13:01matter is imagining a specific image.
- 1:13:04And then I will bring it down to your
- 1:13:06reality. Imagine if a person was
- 1:13:08sentenced. Sentenced to death, already
- 1:13:11sentenced to death, and the judge, for
- 1:13:13some reason, said he was sentenced to
- 1:13:16death, and he put on the red suit. He
- 1:13:19put on what? The red suit, and he is
- 1:13:21now in prison. And at every moment, he
- 1:13:27is waiting for the guard to enter, call
- 1:13:29his name, and take him to the gallows.
- 1:13:32Do you imagine that this person would
- 1:13:35waste time? Actually, this is known;
- 1:13:38anyone who has been to prison knows
- 1:13:41that most of those on death row reform
- 1:13:44themselves during this period and
- 1:13:47perform very highly. I know scholars
- 1:13:51who went to prison, and there were
- 1:13:53people on death row who were actual
- 1:13:55criminals—they were what? Actual
- 1:13:58criminals, not even innocent ones, and
- 1:14:01besides the innocent ones, some of them
- 1:14:04memorized a large part of the Quran
- 1:14:07during this time. And some people
- 1:14:09became devout worshippers during this
- 1:14:11period. The audio is clear, folks,
- 1:14:12right? Um...Can you imagine this period
- 1:14:17? Even if the person wasn't a good
- 1:14:18person, it's impossible for them to
- 1:14:19waste a single moment during this time.
- 1:14:21You will find them praying. They are
- 1:14:23holding the Quran all the time. They
- 1:14:25are reading the Quran all the time.
- 1:14:29Right or wrong? They definitely will be
- 1:14:33like that. So, what is the difference?
- 1:14:38The audio is clear. Okay, what is the
- 1:14:46difference between this state and you
- 1:14:48right now, sitting in your room on your
- 1:14:50bed? What is the difference? The
- 1:14:55difference is that we have been told
- 1:14:57quite clearly, "You are a dead person,
- 1:14:59and they are dead people." Meaning, in
- 1:15:04short, in plain terms, God told us all,
- 1:15:07"You are sentenced to death." And the
- 1:15:12time is undefined, and the Angel of
- 1:15:14Death may come at any moment. What is
- 1:15:17the difference between that state and
- 1:15:19this state? There is no difference,
- 1:15:22only heedlessness. We all must, folks,
- 1:15:27I always say: "Put on the red suit."
- 1:15:30This is the solution so we don't get
- 1:15:33lazy. Always remember this sentence of
- 1:15:36mine; it's painful, but it's a good
- 1:15:38solution. Put on the red suit, because
- 1:15:42you are actually wearing it, but you
- 1:15:45just can't see it. You are already
- 1:15:48sentenced to death. It’s not the
- 1:15:52officer who will walk in, but the Angel
- 1:15:55of Death, suddenly and without any
- 1:15:57warning. The officer walking in is a
- 1:15:59mercy, because I still have time,
- 1:16:01I’ll walk, and there is a gallows
- 1:16:03rope. I’ll be asked if there’s
- 1:16:05anything I want before I die, and
- 1:16:06they’ll let me pray two rak'ahs. I
- 1:16:08actually think someone sentenced to
- 1:16:10death might be better off than those on
- 1:16:12the outside. Those on the outside won't
- 1:16:14be told that; for them, there is no
- 1:16:16officer. Those on the outside won't be
- 1:16:18asked what they want before they die,
- 1:16:19nor will they be given a chance to pray
- 1:16:21two rak'ahs. So, our red suit is much
- 1:16:25tougher than the red suit of that man
- 1:16:28inside. So why are you being lazy? Live
- 1:16:33the life of that man while you are in
- 1:16:35your room, at your work, and in the
- 1:16:36street. I’m not telling you to live
- 1:16:39in misery; on the contrary, this
- 1:16:42reminder is a beautiful thing because
- 1:16:45it urges me to work. I don’t want the
- 1:16:48negative remembrance of death, which
- 1:16:49leads to depression, which leaves me
- 1:16:51paralyzed and unable to do anything,
- 1:16:53which turns into a mental illness. No,
- 1:16:55of course not. I want the beautiful
- 1:16:57remembrance of death, which is a
- 1:16:58beautiful motivator, the reason I am
- 1:17:00always moving, always hyper, and always
- 1:17:02working. Do you understand the
- 1:17:04difference, everyone? So that is a
- 1:17:07solution, a cause for laziness is
- 1:17:08having long-term hopes. And we
- 1:17:10mentioned its solution, one of the
- 1:17:12causes of laziness. Forgetting death,
- 1:17:17excuse me, I will fix that later.
- 1:17:19Forgetting death, which also comes with
- 1:17:22long-term hopes, or let's just say I'll
- 1:17:24replace it with procrastination to
- 1:17:26avoid repetition. So, procrastination
- 1:17:29—let me tell you the disaster of
- 1:17:31procrastination. Procrastination has
- 1:17:34two disasters, guys. The first is
- 1:17:36well-known: if I procrastinate, I might
- 1:17:39die. It’s easy to die before reaching
- 1:17:42what you want. Now, the second disaster
- 1:17:44...This is what no one notices. It is
- 1:17:48the loss of desire. I won't say loss of
- 1:17:50desire. No. It's the deprivation of
- 1:17:53desire. Meaning, right now, I intended
- 1:17:56to memorize the Quran. But I said later
- 1:18:00, let's wait for summer or next year.
- 1:18:03Maybe after Ramadan. Even though I
- 1:18:04wanted to do it right then. There was
- 1:18:06enthusiasm. Then came...Summer. Because
- 1:18:11I...Refused this blessing. A blessing,
- 1:18:16a blessing from God. That I was
- 1:18:17intending, determined, and wanted this
- 1:18:18blessing. I rejected this blessing, so
- 1:18:21God punished me and deprived me of it.
- 1:18:23So when summer came, I found I didn't
- 1:18:26want to memorize the Quran. Because you
- 1:18:31didn't utilize this blessing when it
- 1:18:34came, you were deprived of it: "But you
- 1:18:36were content with sitting [the first
- 1:18:38time], so sit [now] with those who stay
- 1:18:41behind." Perhaps because you were
- 1:18:44content with sitting the first time.
- 1:18:47God might decide against you. That's it
- 1:18:48, I won't give you this blessing again.
- 1:18:51So procrastination is a disaster;
- 1:18:53either you die or the idea dies. So, I
- 1:18:57must jump into action immediately with
- 1:18:59anything that comes to me. One of the
- 1:19:04causes of laziness is rushing results.
- 1:19:07When a person ties their persistence to
- 1:19:09achieving the result. And I think we
- 1:19:11addressed this. Very clearly when we
- 1:19:14spoke about concepts. That is why
- 1:19:16concepts, everyone, make a difference.
- 1:19:18Your Islamic concept makes a difference
- 1:19:19. Is the motivator for us the results,
- 1:19:22everyone? No. We said the motivator is
- 1:19:25the struggle itself. As long as I am
- 1:19:28struggling, I am happy. Because I know
- 1:19:30that I am rewarded for the effort, not
- 1:19:33the result. Undoubtedly, results are
- 1:19:34motivating. But they are a motivator
- 1:19:37beyond the primary one. They are
- 1:19:39neither the primary nor the only
- 1:19:40motivator. And they shouldn't be. The
- 1:19:42only motivator, otherwise we would get
- 1:19:44discouraged; three-quarters of us would
- 1:19:46get discouraged because three-quarters
- 1:19:48of us don't reach the desired result
- 1:19:50perfectly, but as long as I am striving
- 1:19:52, why am I upset? Why am I in a hurry?
- 1:19:54The result will come in its own time;
- 1:19:56if it comes, then well and good, and if
- 1:19:58it doesn't, what can we do? It is God's
- 1:20:00decree. You are not responsible for
- 1:20:02their guidance, but God guides whom He
- 1:20:04wills. The true motivator is that I am
- 1:20:06striving; the fact that I am successful
- 1:20:08, that God is honoring me and using me,
- 1:20:10that alone is a motivator for me. I
- 1:20:12thank God with more. More work, more
- 1:20:15diligence, and more thanking Him for
- 1:20:17being used by being used again. So I
- 1:20:20stay motivated all the time. The
- 1:20:24striving is what excites me, not, uh,
- 1:20:28the results. And of course, when the
- 1:20:31result comes, it is even more exciting,
- 1:20:32surely. But it remains that, you know,
- 1:20:35I am fine. If the results come, they
- 1:20:37come, and if they don't, that's fine.
- 1:20:38And rushing for results—man was
- 1:20:40created of haste. The result might come
- 1:20:42, it will come, but rushing is bad.
- 1:20:44Sometimes someone, for example, starts
- 1:20:45a jurisprudence book. So when they see
- 1:20:46the book has 300. Pages, they say, "Oh
- 1:20:48my goodness.""When will I finish this?"
- 1:20:49Or someone wants to finish memorizing
- 1:20:51the Quran. So they tell her, for
- 1:20:53example, "Let's set a
- 1:20:54two-and-a-half-year plan.""Two and a
- 1:20:56half years? No, that's too far." In a
- 1:21:00second, two and a half years will pass.
- 1:21:02You will find your colleague has
- 1:21:03finished while you are still where you
- 1:21:04are. Do not rush. Time will pass. And
- 1:21:07it will pass quickly. And we will
- 1:21:09arrive and. And you will find the plan
- 1:21:11is complete. Everyone thought, "Oh,
- 1:21:14it's still a while until..." By the
- 1:21:15time they said those words, the time
- 1:21:17had passed. Did it happen or not? Tell
- 1:21:19me, did it happen or not? Has there
- 1:21:20been something before where you said, "
- 1:21:22Oh, it's still a while until I reach it
- 1:21:23"? Did the time pass or not? And it
- 1:21:25passed for you and others. Did it or
- 1:21:26not? And others reached it while you
- 1:21:28were in your place. Didn't they? What
- 1:21:31was the need for the rush? It would
- 1:21:34have happened anyway. But it was a
- 1:21:36matter of patience. Just patience with
- 1:21:38time. So we are learning. I don't want
- 1:21:40past experiences to be discouraging to
- 1:21:42us. No, we want to learn from them.
- 1:21:44Finally, the last thing we have:
- 1:21:46keeping company with those of weak
- 1:21:48ambition. And the lazy, and excessive
- 1:21:51eating. Laziness is contagious;
- 1:21:54laziness is contagious. And again, tell
- 1:21:57me, do you remember when you sit with
- 1:21:58your friend who doesn't...doesn't study
- 1:22:00, the lazy one? What happened? You
- 1:22:03wanted to study. And in the end, you
- 1:22:06got lazy. The memory. Those who have
- 1:22:11the funny examples that. We mentioned,
- 1:22:12the ones with the original Egyptian
- 1:22:14theories. That person cannot be your
- 1:22:17friend. A colleague from afar is fine.
- 1:22:18A peer from afar. Fine, but a close
- 1:22:20friend that we hang out with and such?
- 1:22:22No, no, no. Make friends with those of
- 1:22:24high ambition who use their time well,
- 1:22:26those with high activity. A person
- 1:22:28follows the religion of their friend.
- 1:22:30Character is a thief, a friend
- 1:22:32influences you, and character is
- 1:22:34contagious. And of course, one of the
- 1:22:36basic things is excessive eating,
- 1:22:38everyone. We cannot eat too much; it
- 1:22:40will tire you, of course. Some of the
- 1:22:42predecessors said: Do not eat much. So
- 1:22:44you drink much. So you sleep much. So
- 1:22:46you lose much. A rule. Do not eat too
- 1:22:49much. So you drink too much. So you
- 1:22:51sleep too much. So you lose too much.
- 1:22:54Eat only as much as your body needs.
- 1:22:56After that, do not fill your stomach.
- 1:22:58Do not stuff your belly with too much
- 1:22:59food. Or too much drink. This is not
- 1:23:01clever, nor brave, nor good; it ends in
- 1:23:03regret and illness, and beyond the
- 1:23:05diseases, it will cause problems that
- 1:23:08increase laziness too. So these are
- 1:23:10some causes of laziness. We conclude
- 1:23:12with a saying by Ali ibn Abi Talib. He
- 1:23:14said: "The thing I fear most...""I fear
- 1:23:16for you is following desires and long
- 1:23:18hopes, for following desires turns one
- 1:23:20away from the truth; he wants his
- 1:23:22desires, so when the truth comes to him
- 1:23:24, he does not like it because his
- 1:23:26desire does not want that.""And long
- 1:23:29hopes make one forget the afterlife."
- 1:23:32But when a person shortens their hope
- 1:23:33and increases...The remembrance of
- 1:23:35death, they remain in a state of
- 1:23:36constant alertness. And diligent work.
