- 0:01"Hola"
- 0:02En esta lección, vamos a hablar acerca del "se" Impersonal.
- 0:08A while back, while I was visiting Mexico,
- 0:11a little boy was eating some chips
- 0:13and the chips there was this little piece of cardboard
- 0:15with grooves to build things with.
- 0:18And he saw that and told me.
- 0:20Hmm.
- 0:21Esto no se come,
- 0:23¿verdad?
- 0:25Interesting.
- 0:26If you remember the videos on "se permite" "se prohíbe" for
- 0:29talking about things that are allowed or unallowed
- 0:32"se permite" means it's allowed and "se
- 0:35prohíbe" means it's prohibited or it's not allowed.
- 0:38So maybe "no se come" here is like saying
- 0:42it isn't eaten.
- 0:45In fact, you could also say: one doesn't eat
- 0:48this piece of cardboard.
- 0:51What do these mean exactly?
- 0:53Hmm.
- 0:55I guess in English, you might say.
- 0:56Instead, you don't eat this cardboard or I shouldn't eat this cardboard.
- 1:01It gives the idea of it's probably not a good idea to eat this.
- 1:06The "se" before "come" makes this a usage that we
- 1:09call the Impersonal "se" or Passive "se".
- 1:14We actually seen this before without realizing it in the videos.
- 1:17And I've mentioned "se permite" and "se prohíbe"
- 1:20But if we go even further back to one of the first
- 1:23videos and the entire series on the alphabet,
- 1:26we saw the phrases
- 1:28"¿Cómo se dice?"
- 1:31And the answer: "se dice..."
- 1:33And really what we're asking is how is it said?
- 1:37It's said.
- 1:39I also saw: "¿Cómo se escribe?"
- 1:42And the answer: "Se escribe..."
- 1:45How is it written?
- 1:47It's written.
- 1:49We call that the Impersonal say or Passive say because it's often used
- 1:53instead of naming a specific person doing the action.
- 1:57Let's look at some more examples.
- 2:00"Se habla español"
- 2:04The literal translations here are Spanish spoken or one speak Spanish.
- 2:09If you realize that say is kind of an is something or one does the action.
- 2:14What do you think that actually means?
- 2:18We speak Spanish, we speak American.
- 2:20We need Spanish.
- 2:23I means in that place, wherever that is.
- 2:25We speak Spanish, so the people speak Spanish to those
- 2:28that need it as a service.
- 2:31I'm about here.
- 2:32"Se vende pollo"
- 2:34The literal translations would be chicken
- 2:36is sold or one sells chicken.
- 2:40"¿Qué quiere decir?"
- 2:42What does it mean?
- 2:44Everyone sells chicken here.
- 2:46We sell chickens here.
- 2:47Or I am selling one chicken.
- 2:54The best one would be.
- 2:54We sell chickens here.
- 2:56Although chicken is used singularly here,
- 2:58it's the idea of, in general,
- 2:59chicken as a food.
- 3:01So the person, wherever that is,
- 3:03sells chicken.
- 3:06"Uno más"
- 3:08"Se venden tortas"
- 3:11The literal translation is here.
- 3:12If you know that "tortas" are a type of sandwich in Mexico.
- 3:15Sandwiches are sold.
- 3:17Or one sells sandwiches.
- 3:21"¿Qué quiere decir?"
- 3:23We sell sandwiches, everyone sells
- 3:25sandwiches or we eat sandwiches.
- 3:28Here, the people advertising are saying we sell sandwiches.
- 3:33Hmm.
- 3:34These all have a say before the verb.
- 3:36Let's look again.
- 3:37"Se habla español" "Se vende
- 3:39pollo" y "se vende tortas"
- 3:42Notice that we say "se venden", because there's
- 3:45more than one thing being sold.
- 3:48So that's basically the Impersonal or Passive "se",
- 3:51the way we form it is we take "se",
- 3:55plus
- 3:56the he or she form of the verb or the day form of the verb.
- 4:01All right.
- 4:01Let's look at some other examples.
- 4:03Some people teach that the Impersonal say
- 4:04is often used instead of the to form.
- 4:06Should I be called the Impersonal saying we're not really saying you do
- 4:10it, but we're giving the idea of people do it.
- 4:12So we're kind of encouraging you to do it.
- 4:14For example, one little boy told me "esto no
- 4:16se come", he was saying,
- 4:17You don't eat this, like,
- 4:18don't eat this or I don't eat this.
- 4:21But it could be telling me as well, Hey,
- 4:23hey, don't eat that in a very impersonal way.
- 4:26Also, we could see this in the phrase "Sí,
- 4:28se puede".
- 4:29And here I say was kind of implied.
- 4:31So you're saying, yes,
- 4:32it can be done.
- 4:34That is.
- 4:34Yes, you can.
- 4:35You can do it.
- 4:36But we're not saying it in the you form
- 4:38the two form or the instead form,
- 4:41the really common one.
- 4:41You might hear from parents to their kids: "Eso no se
- 4:44hace"
- 4:45literally, that is not done.
- 4:48But it's telling the kids, don't do that.
- 4:49Don't do that.
- 4:50No, no, no.
- 4:51Not here.
- 4:51Not here.
- 4:52And you might hear somebody say at some point,
- 4:54if you're dancing like me very badly, you might hear them say,
- 4:56"Así no se baila"
- 4:58Which would be like saying, that's not how it is dance,
- 5:01but it's not how one dances.
- 5:03But they're telling.
- 5:04That's not how you should dance.
- 5:06And so we're giving this idea of you, but without really saying you.
- 5:10And we're not making it personal, but we're doing it.
- 5:12Impersonal does Impersonal "se"
- 5:15And to summarize again, the uses of the Impersonal "se" or
- 5:18Passive "se" we use it when one does something as a person
- 5:22does something in general, you do something,
- 5:26we do something and or something is
- 5:29done or some things are done.
- 5:33Well, it's basically the Impersonal "se" or the Passive "se" in Spanish.
