  1. 0:12Dignity, what or who grants it to us?
  2. 0:17Money, fame, possessions, laws, none of
  3. 0:23that. Having been born. Each person is
  4. 0:28a unique and unrepeatable being who
  5. 0:30must be respected in their singularity.
  6. 0:33However, in practice, there are many
  7. 0:36situations that threaten that respect.
  8. 0:39No. Being unique and unrepeatable does
  9. 1:08not mean dressing one way or speaking
  10. 1:09another. Our dignity is manifested,
  11. 1:14expressed, and realized through
  12. 1:16intelligence, moral conscience, and
  13. 1:18freedom. We can understand the world,
  14. 1:23assess whether it functions properly,
  15. 1:25and act accordingly. And that
  16. 1:28differentiates us from any other
  17. 1:29creature on the planet. We can
  18. 1:32understand the world and the universe
  19. 1:34and give our existence a sense of
  20. 1:36direction. We have the capacity to
  21. 1:40choose and act responsibly. That is why
  22. 1:44we understand that dignity is a gift,
  23. 1:47but also a task. It is not enough to
  24. 1:50seek the recognition of our own dignity
  25. 1:53, our intelligence, conscience, and
  26. 1:55freedom. The responsibility arises to
  27. 1:59ensure that others also achieve respect
  28. 2:02for their dignity. It is a
  29. 2:05responsibility towards ourselves,
  30. 2:07towards others, and towards nature. The
  31. 2:12fact of living in the world with other
  32. 2:15people, what is called the social
  33. 2:17dimension, projects us towards
  34. 2:18solidarity with others. Therefore, the
  35. 2:21human person must be at the center of
  36. 2:24all political, economic, and social
  37. 2:27decisions. The most secure and
  38. 2:30effective way to achieve happiness and
  39. 2:32justice is to affirm the intrinsic
  40. 2:35value of every human being. The
  41. 2:38individual and the social are
  42. 2:40inseparable in people. So, the person
  43. 2:43grows when they build solidarity and
  44. 2:45diminishes when they destroy it.
  45. 2:49Therefore, everything in social life
  46. 2:51and political action must respond to
  47. 2:54the recognition and realization of the
  48. 2:56dignity of each person separately and
  49. 2:59of all people as a whole. It is not
  50. 3:03enough to elect a representative who
  51. 3:04defends my ideas, but rather one who
  52. 3:06pursues the common good. And the
  53. 3:10defense of human rights plays an
  54. 3:12important role in promoting human
  55. 3:14dignity, as they are not granted rights
  56. 3:17, but recognized ones. That is to say,
  57. 3:20no one has to give them to us; we
  58. 3:22possess them by the very fact of having
  59. 3:24been born. At the same time, they carry
  60. 3:27associated responsibilities, certain
  61. 3:30duties. The recognition of human rights
  62. 3:34requires first giving priority to the
  63. 3:36practical and effective recognition of
  64. 3:39the rights of the impoverished, who are
  65. 3:41those people deprived of exercising
  66. 3:44their fundamental rights in their lives
  67. 3:46. The very existence of the
  68. 3:49impoverished is the practical denial of
  69. 3:52the dignity of the person. For the
  70. 3:56Church, human dignity takes on a
  71. 3:58twofold sacred character, because the
  72. 4:00person was created in the image of God
  73. 4:02and because God himself became a person
  74. 4:05in Jesus. Rediscovering and helping
  75. 4:09others rediscover the inviolable
  76. 4:11dignity of every person is an essential
  77. 4:14task of the Church.
