Full transcript
- 0:10You'll be able to save yourself another
- 0:12couple thousand dollars versus going
- 0:14lease purchase.
- 0:16It's not as hard as you think. You'll be
- 0:18surprised. Once you have the truck,
- 0:19you're like, "Oh I really got my
- 0:21own truck."
- 0:23Easy to get into a truck, guys. I don't
- 0:25know why
- 0:26you guys think it's so difficult.
- 0:28Oakley works with these guys and
- 0:31look at those trucks.
- 0:33Rise and shine, it's time to grind. We
- 0:35are in
- 0:37Mississippi. We just passed through
- 0:38Hattiesburg, so we're good to go. I'm
- 0:41headed down to Axis, Alabama, so we
- 0:43could go ahead and drop off these
- 0:44aluminum cones that I got.
- 0:48All right, so we're loading um
- 1:03Those are aluminum cones. So, they're
- 1:06they're going to He actually bent one of
- 1:08my bows. He's going to tell his
- 1:09supervisor so we can try to get that
- 1:11fixed. If not, um I won't get charged
- 1:13for it, but um we're over here in
- 1:16Sapulpa,
- 1:17Oklahoma, and we're loading these up
- 1:19going out to um
- 1:21Axis, Alabama. It's a nice good long
- 1:24run.
- 1:26Should be a good paying load.
- 1:28All right, guys, let me get back in the
- 1:29truck and uh read my gauges so I'm not
- 1:32overweight. We're going to talk about
- 1:34owner-operator.
- 1:35At some point in your life, you you
- 1:37dreamt about owning your own truck and
- 1:39running your own business. If your dream
- 1:42is to
- 1:44own your own truck and run your own
- 1:46business, I think there's a big
- 1:48misconception
- 1:50on what it takes to do that.
- 1:52If you run down the numbers, let's say
- 1:55that want to go buy a truck and have
- 1:57your own authority
- 1:58with your own DOT number and go through
- 2:01that process.
- 2:04If you if you run down the startup costs
- 2:06and we will go over those startup costs
- 2:08today.
- 2:09You know, if you run the numbers,
- 2:11you're looking at around, you know, 40
- 2:1350 grand to get started. That's
- 2:16expensive and people don't have that
- 2:19type of money to to to to jump into
- 2:22owner operator situation. But that's not
- 2:24your only avenue and we're going to go
- 2:26over the other avenue as well today. The
- 2:28other avenue is
- 2:31just buying a truck and signing on with
- 2:34a company.
- 2:35Now you're taking
- 2:37the 50,000 number that that you had
- 2:39difficulties trying to trying to digest
- 2:42and getting into truck and being an
- 2:44owner operator
- 2:46now dwindling down to 20 10% of what the
- 2:50truck costs for the down payment
- 2:53and signing on with a company. That
- 2:56changes everything. As
- 2:58drivers, we need to kind of swallow our
- 3:00pride. You know, I think everybody has
- 3:03aspirations of becoming an owner
- 3:04operator, getting a second truck, a
- 3:06third truck, a fourth truck, having a
- 3:07fleet, creating this big monster
- 3:10company, making your stamp in the
- 3:12transportation world. If you don't have
- 3:15the
- 3:16you know, the capital to do that, then
- 3:18let's just take baby steps. Let's let's
- 3:20just fall back a little bit and we're
- 3:22going to go ahead and compare these two
- 3:24so that way, you know, you'll see how
- 3:26easy it is to become an owner operator
- 3:30whether you're signed on or whether you
- 3:31have your own MC.
- 3:33Hit that subscribe button if you haven't
- 3:35done so already.
- 3:37Please hit that hitchhiker.
- 3:39Help the channel out a little bit and
- 3:41always you're always more than welcome
- 3:44to leave a comment. I love the
- 3:46interaction so
- 3:47please leave a comment if you have
- 3:49anything to say, have anything to ask.
- 3:51I'd appreciate it. And if you're a
- 3:53hater, well, you already know what to
- 3:54do. You hit that thumbs down. That's
- 3:56what you do anyway. All right, so let's
- 3:59break this down.
- 4:02All right, so let's break down these
- 4:03costs. We're going to go through
- 4:05everything so that you can get an idea
- 4:07of what it costs, what the startup costs
- 4:09are going to be for an owner-operator
- 4:12with just one truck.
- 4:14So, first off, you're going to need your
- 4:16LLC. That's number one. Depending on
- 4:19what state you're in, that could be
- 4:21anywhere from 100 bucks to $800. All
- 4:24right? Uh some places it might even be
- 4:26free. I don't know what states those
- 4:28are, but we're going to take in Oklahoma
- 4:31it's 100 bucks and California is 800.
- 4:34All right? So, that's for your that's
- 4:35for your LLC.
- 4:37Second, you're going to need your EIN
- 4:40number. That is absolutely free. You go
- 4:43Don't let anybody
- 4:46tell you that they're going to sign you
- 4:47up for a fee and get your EIN number.
- 4:52You go to the IRS website, you sign up
- 4:54for a EIN number, it is absolutely free.
- 4:58Period.
- 5:00The next one was going to be your uh US
- 5:03uh DOT and your authority, your MC
- 5:06number.
- 5:08That costs $300 for that application.
- 5:12So, you're going to pay $300 when you
- 5:14fill out that application to get your MC
- 5:16authority and your DOT number.
- 5:19The next thing is you're going to have
- 5:21to get a business banking account. Now,
- 5:24depending on there are some people that
- 5:26don't get business banking accounts.
- 5:28They actually put it in their personal
- 5:29accounts. Well, let me tell you
- 5:30something, when you're an LLC, you need
- 5:33to be able to show that you can separate
- 5:35your business money
- 5:38with your personal money
- 5:41because they're going to come after your
- 5:42business money
- 5:44because you're a limited liability
- 5:46company.
- 5:47An LLC.
- 5:49Now if
- 5:51you don't you can't show that those two
- 5:54entities are separate, your personal
- 5:56with your business, they'll come and get
- 5:58it all.
- 5:59So if you have assets, a home, land,
- 6:03RV,
- 6:05toys, boat, whatever, they're coming for
- 6:08it. All right, so keep that in mind.
- 6:11So go get a business bank account. Some
- 6:13places require you to deposit $200 to
- 6:16start that business account. So we're
- 6:18going to say anywhere from zero to $200.
- 6:20Now,
- 6:22these aren't necessary, but I highly
- 6:24recommend them. I have seen a lot of
- 6:27people make this mistake and get a Gmail
- 6:31or a Yahoo account
- 6:33and make that their business account,
- 6:35and brokers have denied them.
- 6:38Because there's a lot of fraud that goes
- 6:40on with the Gmail accounts and all these
- 6:42these free
- 6:44um, you know, uh, email accounts. When
- 6:47you're new, it makes it that much more
- 6:50easier to get loads if you have a dot
- 6:52com. So that means you'll have to go get
- 6:54a domain anywhere from
- 6:56let's say 50 bucks.
- 6:59And then you'll you'll you'll usually
- 7:00with a domain a lot of times they'll
- 7:03they'll give you a a dot com or uh, your
- 7:06domain name
- 7:08uh,
- 7:09email account for like $3.99 a month or
- 7:12something like that. So
- 7:14let's just say 50 bucks.
- 7:16The second thing you're going to want to
- 7:18do,
- 7:19you don't have to, but it's a good idea
- 7:21to do so, is get you a business phone
- 7:24number.
- 7:26Uh, you know, any kind of secondary
- 7:28number
- 7:30because once you sign up for your MC,
- 7:32they share that publicly and you're
- 7:34going to get calls you just can't stop.
- 7:37And they're going to keep coming and
- 7:39coming and coming and coming. So if you
- 7:41decide to get your domain
- 7:44and a and a with a with a email address
- 7:47separate than your personal or
- 7:50other than a Gmail account and you
- 7:52decide to go ahead and you you want to
- 7:54grab
- 7:55uh a telephone number so that you don't
- 7:57get spam calls day in and day out, it's
- 8:00non-stop. You want to do that before you
- 8:03sign up for your MC authority and your
- 8:04DOT. Just a mental note of that if
- 8:07that's what you decide to do. But, if
- 8:08you want to save some money, don't do
- 8:10it. Get you a free Gmail account and use
- 8:12your personal number. But, just know
- 8:14that you're going to have to withstand
- 8:15and uh
- 8:16get a bunch of calls from a bunch of
- 8:19various different people trying to sell
- 8:21you stuff. All right, next thing on that
- 8:22list is
- 8:23you got to go get a truck. That's going
- 8:25to be
- 8:27a down payment.
- 8:29All right, when you go buy a truck, a
- 8:31lot of places want 20% down. It depends
- 8:33what the value of the truck is. The
- 8:35newer the truck, the more money they
- 8:36want down.
- 8:38The older the truck, a used truck, a
- 8:40little less. You can get away with 10%.
- 8:42I put
- 8:43I think less than 10% down. I think I
- 8:45put like 8 or 5%. I put My truck was
- 8:48$70,000. I put $5,000 down. You know,
- 8:52it's different for everybody. So, um
- 8:55just I guess depending on what your
- 8:56credit is. And be keep in mind too, on
- 8:59your very first truck
- 9:01they are going to
- 9:03ream you
- 9:05with uh the interest rate. It's just a
- 9:08known fact. They're taking a risk on you
- 9:10and that risk needs to pay off. So, just
- 9:13be aware of that. It's you can't There's
- 9:15nothing You can't There's no way to get
- 9:17around it.
- 9:18There's just no way to get around it. If
- 9:20there is, then somebody go down and you
- 9:22know, please put in the comments how we
- 9:24can how you how somebody can get around
- 9:26some of this stuff. All right, so the
- 9:28next thing you got to figure out is what
- 9:30are you going to do? Are you doing
- 9:31flatbed, dry van, reefer? You got to go
- 9:34get yourself a trailer.
- 9:36Uh
- 9:36a security deposit of about 500 bucks.
- 9:39If you rent the trailer,
- 9:40could be up to a thousand dollars. And
- 9:42then, if you're buying a trailer, it's
- 9:44going to be, you know, 10,
- 9:4615, 20% down, depending on where you get
- 9:49it. 20% of, let's say, 45,000.
- 9:52If it's, uh, if it's used, it's going to
- 9:54be, you know, 10, 20% of
- 9:57um, you know, 25,000 or so. If you get a
- 10:00really cheap trailer, it's going to be,
- 10:01you know, even less. So, now once you
- 10:03got a truck, it's time to get insurance.
- 10:06So, insurance is, uh, going to be
- 10:08expensive because you're you're just
- 10:09starting out. Doesn't matter, you can
- 10:11tell them you own a home and you have a
- 10:14bunch of experience, it's still going to
- 10:15range about
- 10:17anywhere between
- 10:191,500 to 2,500, just depending on who
- 10:21you are, per month.
- 10:23Now, when you, uh, get the insurance,
- 10:25they're going to want usually a down
- 10:27payment on that insurance. It's usually
- 10:30the first month and the last month. So,
- 10:32if you, you know, you're paying
- 10:34$2,000 a month, they're going to want
- 10:36about $4,000 down, 4,500, somewhere up
- 10:39in that area. So, you got to have that
- 10:41money to put down for your insurance to
- 10:43actually start to kick in.
- 10:46So, we tell you get that in, and that's
- 10:48basically your your bonding the the
- 10:50contract, the insurance contract will be
- 10:52bonded once you put down that
- 10:55that down payment.
- 10:56So, you got to have that money.
- 10:58Next thing is you got to register your
- 11:00truck.
- 11:02That varies depending on where you're
- 11:04at. In Oklahoma, it's 800 bucks. In
- 11:06California, it's anywhere between,
- 11:08depending on how much your truck costs,
- 11:102,000 to 2,500. So, that's a big range.
- 11:13So, it it does matter on where on where
- 11:16you're located at and where you register
- 11:17your truck at.
- 11:19So, after that is your BOC-3. Your BOC-3
- 11:24is your state agent. So, if you get sued
- 11:27in another state, or somebody wants to,
- 11:30you know, file papers on you in another
- 11:31state, there is somebody to represent
- 11:34you in each and all states. You know,
- 11:37when you sign up for the BOC, it's a
- 11:39one-time $30 fee. That's it.
- 11:43Listen to me. It's a one-time fee for
- 11:46your BOC-3.
- 11:48One time.
- 11:50Make sure you ask. Make sure you find
- 11:52out. Go on the FMCSA website and and
- 11:56look for the registered agents. It's a
- 11:57one-time fee. That's it. Next, you're
- 12:00going to need your UCR registration.
- 12:03That's your Unified Carrier
- 12:04Registration. That's going to cost you
- 12:06$50 per year for that. So, go ahead and
- 12:09tack on $50 on that startup cost. You're
- 12:12going to need your 2290.
- 12:14Your 2290 is your vehicle heavy use tax.
- 12:18That's going to cost you $550.
- 12:21That's a yearly charge, but you're going
- 12:23to need it to start up. So,
- 12:25add on another 550.
- 12:28After that, it's time to sign up for
- 12:30consortium.
- 12:32Consortium is your random drug and
- 12:34alcohol testing.
- 12:36You need to sign up and do that. It's
- 12:38about $175.
- 12:41That is a yearly charge, but to get
- 12:42started, you need that. The $175
- 12:46doesn't count towards your random or
- 12:49your pre-employment testing. The
- 12:51pre-employment test is another 100
- 12:53bucks. So, you as the owner-operator,
- 12:55you need a pre-employment
- 12:58urine test. You have to have it. You're
- 13:01an employee of yourself. There's no way
- 13:04around it. Don't forget it, cuz if you
- 13:06do and they do an audit, which DOT will
- 13:08do an audit anywhere from the time you
- 13:10start to about 12 months, they're going
- 13:13to they're going to send you an email
- 13:14and say, "Hey, this is officer such and
- 13:16such. It's time for an audit." And you
- 13:18better have proof that you did them. If
- 13:21not, they will shut you down.
- 13:24Where you going to park your truck?
- 13:26Hopefully, you got enough land where you
- 13:27can pull in or you got a big enough
- 13:29street and your neighbors don't mind you
- 13:31can pull that bad boy right in there.
- 13:34That's completely fine. Just make sure
- 13:35that you have a place to park it. If you
- 13:37don't have a place to park and you do
- 13:40find a yard, it's going to you know, the
- 13:41average cost for a park a monthly
- 13:43parking spot
- 13:45is $250. I would suggest finding
- 13:48somebody you know that has enough space
- 13:50and allow you to park that there
- 13:52uh for hopefully free. If not at a
- 13:55discount or only when you're there. If
- 13:57you're out two or three weeks and you go
- 13:59park for a weekend and then go back out,
- 14:01really you're going to pay $250 for two
- 14:03days of parking.
- 14:05So, it really doesn't make sense. But
- 14:07yes, you have to find a place to park
- 14:08and I just put $250 because if you're
- 14:11the unfortunate one where you don't know
- 14:13anybody and you don't have any truck
- 14:15stops near you, about $250 per month for
- 14:18that parking spot.
- 14:20All right, you got to get your decals
- 14:22for your truck. That's going to run you
- 14:23about 150. You're going to need decals
- 14:26on each side. You're going to need a
- 14:27truck number
- 14:29on each side and you're going to need
- 14:31all your your VIN number, your DOT MC
- 14:34number and all the information on the
- 14:35side of your truck.
- 14:37Also, after that, you're going to need
- 14:38your MVR report. Yes.
- 14:41You're going to have to pull a MVR
- 14:43report on yourself and during the audit,
- 14:47DOT is going to ask for it. So, don't
- 14:50pass it up. All right, you got to treat
- 14:52yourself like an employee.
- 14:54So, after you do all that, next step is
- 14:56IFTA and they keep track of how much you
- 14:59how much fuel you purchase and how many
- 15:01miles you run in those states. And
- 15:04Oregon charges you
- 15:07about 25 cents per mile. In order to get
- 15:10that
- 15:11bond from Oregon, it's about 2,000
- 15:14bucks. There's companies that allow you
- 15:17to only put 10% down. So, $200 and you
- 15:21have to report your mileage, how much
- 15:24you fuel up there monthly. That's a
- 15:26monthly report that you have to generate
- 15:29and hand over to um ODOT.
- 15:32And IFTA IFTA doesn't cost you anything.
- 15:35So, to break after breaking all that
- 15:37down, IFTA doesn't cost you anything to
- 15:39sign up for IFTA. I believe New York
- 15:41might be a little bit eight bucks or
- 15:43something for the stickers. Uh New
- 15:45Mexico, you don't get any stickers, you
- 15:46just sign up. I don't know if there's a
- 15:48small fee to that. I hired somebody to
- 15:50do that for me and keep track of all
- 15:53that stuff. All right, so basically, you
- 15:55know, you need your ELD equipment.
- 15:57You're going to need a PrePass unless
- 15:59you want to stop at scales every single
- 16:01time and pay your tolls with cash or
- 16:04credit card. If you get the PrePass, you
- 16:07get a discounted rate when you run
- 16:09through tolls. You don't have to stop,
- 16:11you don't have to pay.
- 16:13And also, PrePass allows you to get down
- 16:15the road. So, every time you have to
- 16:17stop at a scale, you know, you run a
- 16:19whole day and run across four or five
- 16:21scales and if there's a line on those
- 16:23scales, I mean, you're you're just
- 16:24eating into your profits. Also, you need
- 16:27a GPS, so you're going to have to pay
- 16:28for a decent truck GPS. I do not
- 16:31recommend people going off of Google
- 16:33or or Google Maps. You need to have two
- 16:36sources and of course, the the the road
- 16:40atlas is your best friend. But if for
- 16:42some reason you don't know how to read
- 16:44an atlas or you don't want to get it and
- 16:46you just want to go full tech,
- 16:48then you're going to need a truck one so
- 16:50that you can cross-reference because
- 16:51Google will take you down some crazy ass
- 16:53spots and so will the so will the
- 16:56trucking GPS sometimes. So, they're not
- 16:59they're not 100% bulletproof, but you're
- 17:02going to need to spend a pretty dime on
- 17:05on a good one to get you around. Now,
- 17:06you could probably start off with your
- 17:08phone and and Google Maps, but I
- 17:10wouldn't recommend it. Now, these next
- 17:12two things don't cost you any money. You
- 17:15need factoring. Factoring takes a
- 17:16percentage of each load. Some 3%, some 2
- 17:20and 1/2, some 4, some 5. What factoring
- 17:23does is they take your settlements not
- 17:25your settlements, they take your BOLs,
- 17:28your proof of delivery, your PODs, and
- 17:31you send them directly to the factoring
- 17:33company. They take them, they approve
- 17:35them. Basically, what they're doing is
- 17:37they're paying you in advance. It's a
- 17:39good thing because you as an individual
- 17:42owner-operator it becomes very difficult
- 17:45to collect that money if for some reason
- 17:46they're lagging on paying. But with a
- 17:48factoring company that's been around,
- 17:51that has attorneys, knows all the lingo,
- 17:54knows how to how to push customers to
- 17:56pay the pay the money that they owe them
- 17:59that they in turn pay to you,
- 18:02uh you need that that strength uh to
- 18:05collect that money. So, you're you're
- 18:06going to 100% need a factoring company.
- 18:09Now, the only downside to that if
- 18:11somebody defaults and doesn't pay them
- 18:14their money, they come and take that
- 18:17money back. I've never had it happen to
- 18:19me in the 2 years that I've used
- 18:21factoring. I never had it happen. So,
- 18:23just be careful.
- 18:25Uh the other thing is um dispatch. If
- 18:28you're brand new and you don't even know
- 18:30where to start, you're going to have to
- 18:32hire a dispatching company. And they
- 18:34usually take about 6% off of every load
- 18:38that they book for you. I did hire a
- 18:40dispatching company in the beginning and
- 18:42it helped me, but
- 18:44I also started booking my own loads. And
- 18:46you've got to be careful when you do
- 18:47that because if you decide to start
- 18:49booking your own loads, don't do it
- 18:50halfway. You go full-blown because what
- 18:53they're going to end up doing is they're
- 18:54put they'll put you in the beginning
- 18:56with an experienced dispatcher. Once you
- 18:58start booking your own loads and they're
- 19:00they're getting wind that they're only
- 19:01you're only letting them book you loads
- 19:04once a week or twice a week instead of
- 19:05five times like they were
- 19:07doing previously, then what they do is
- 19:10they they hand over your case or hand
- 19:13over your account to a newbie, somebody
- 19:15that just got there. It's retaliation.
- 19:18So
- 19:19So, make sure that if you decide that
- 19:21you're going to book your own loads,
- 19:22make sure you book your own loads and
- 19:24you're ready to do it full-time. Now,
- 19:26there is no upfront cost for a
- 19:28dispatcher, but you will be paying
- 19:31you know, you have to go through and
- 19:32sign up and you will be paying
- 19:33percentage of your load, but it isn't a
- 19:35part of the startup cost. I just thought
- 19:37I'd throw it in there so that you guys
- 19:38understand that you know, you're going
- 19:40to need that if you don't have any
- 19:41experience.
- 19:43On top of that, a fuel card. So, you
- 19:45usually the best way that I would do it
- 19:47as a owner-operator is I would get my
- 19:49fuel card through the factoring company.
- 19:51That's what I would do. I got a Flying J
- 19:54and Pilot account when I not when I
- 19:56first started, but after about a year in
- 19:59and I got some really good rates on that
- 20:01one, but I also got some really good
- 20:03rates
- 20:04from the fuel card that you know, that
- 20:06my factoring company provided me. So, I
- 20:09would recommend that. The fuel card
- 20:11doesn't cost you any money at all. So,
- 20:14you're not going to come out of pocket
- 20:15as a startup fee. I just thought I'd
- 20:16throw it in there so you can jot it down
- 20:18and
- 20:19you got to know what you're going to
- 20:20need a fuel card. So, the last thing
- 20:22you're going to need is a load board and
- 20:24that's absolutely going to cost you some
- 20:25startup money, about 150 to 200 bucks
- 20:28and that's a monthly reoccurrence and
- 20:30even if you have a dispatching company,
- 20:32the load board that you use, you're
- 20:34going to call them and say I'd like to
- 20:35give you know, dispatch access. It's not
- 20:38full access, so they can't see all your
- 20:41personal information in there. You just
- 20:43give them load board access to your
- 20:45dispatcher so he can use your
- 20:49load board to book you loads. So,
- 20:52you absolutely need one even if you have
- 20:54a dispatching company or if you're just
- 20:56going to book loads yourself, you need a
- 20:58load board. So, that's pretty much going
- 21:00to sum it up on on what you actually
- 21:02need. There are a couple more things.
- 21:06It depends you know, additional costs
- 21:08are going to come from what type of uh
- 21:11equipment are you going to run? Are you
- 21:12going to run flatbed? Well, it's about
- 21:13$1,800 for a kit,
- 21:16uh starter kit, and that's going to be
- 21:18your bungies, your edge protectors, your
- 21:20straps, your chains, stuff like that.
- 21:24Uh if you get a full kit, it's about
- 21:253,500 and they're going to throw in you
- 21:27some tarps, probably about three tarps.
- 21:30So, you're looking at 1,800 with no
- 21:31tarps and about 3,500 with tarps. If
- 21:35you're dry van, you're going to need
- 21:37about I would say at least 10 10
- 21:39C-channel straps and some load bars, at
- 21:42least maybe four. So, you're going to
- 21:44need that and then of course you're
- 21:45going to need your gloves and your boots
- 21:47and stuff like that if you don't have
- 21:48them already as safety goggles, a hard
- 21:51hat, vest, you know, you're going to
- 21:54need those things in certain situations.
- 21:56Some people won't even let you on a
- 21:58facility without them. So, don't get
- 22:00yourself caught up and think you don't
- 22:01need them cuz you're just going to be
- 22:03dropping off at docks. You might take a
- 22:05load that you you get there and you
- 22:06absolutely need all your safety gear. As
- 22:08far as reefer is concerned,
- 22:11um pretty much the same as as dry van. I
- 22:14mean, it's a little bit different. I
- 22:15have never run a reefer, but I'm sure
- 22:17they need load bars and stuff like that.
- 22:18They probably need some other special
- 22:20type of equipment. And then if you uh
- 22:22you got to think about weather.
- 22:24So, if you're running in out of Oregon
- 22:26or California, Colorado, maybe Wyoming,
- 22:30stuff like that, you're going to need
- 22:31chains. Chains, you know, for the full
- 22:34set 500 bucks. And then um you know, if
- 22:37you're a van or whatever, uh maybe even
- 22:40you know, even um
- 22:41uh flatbed, you're going to need a broom
- 22:43or a blower
- 22:44to make sure you can clean off your deck
- 22:46uh for what I'm in, I need a a
- 22:48sledgehammer, I need a broom, I need a
- 22:51uh a shovel.
- 22:53You know, there's just each each
- 22:54industry has its own stuff to help you
- 22:56do your job and get your job done. So,
- 22:59you know, you'll need a little bit of
- 23:00money for that.
- 23:02Yeah, guys, so that pretty much sums it
- 23:04up. Now, we do have a total
- 23:07for a startup cost for an owner-operator
- 23:10that's trying to get his MC and his own
- 23:12DOT
- 23:13and run his own show.
- 23:15Book his own loads, do all that. Buy his
- 23:18own truck, get his own insurance, get
- 23:20his own permits, all that other stuff.
- 23:22And the grand total is
- 23:25damn.
- 23:27See what I'm saying? So, that's how much
- 23:29it cost to start up
- 23:32as an owner-operator with your own
- 23:34authority.
- 23:35So, let's talk about option two.
- 23:38Option two is go buy a truck. So, the
- 23:41startup cost for going to buy a truck,
- 23:43like we talked about in option one, is
- 23:45going to be anywhere between 10% and 20%
- 23:49of the cost of the truck. You got to
- 23:51find a dealer, you got to shop around,
- 23:52you got to find somebody that's willing
- 23:53to work with you. After you get the
- 23:55truck,
- 23:57you go and get a 2290,
- 23:59which is your heavy vehicle use tax.
- 24:03That's about $550.
- 24:06That's it.
- 24:07You take your truck, you take your 2290,
- 24:11and you go sign up with a carrier.
- 24:13It's that simple. Once you sign up with
- 24:16the carrier, they're going to And I
- 24:18can't speak for every carrier cuz every
- 24:21carrier is going to be different. But at
- 24:23Oakley,
- 24:25that's all you need.
- 24:27You bring your 2290, you bring the
- 24:29truck, they take care of the insurance.
- 24:32They take care of your IFTA. They take
- 24:34care of your tolls. They take care of
- 24:37your PrePass. They take care of your
- 24:40Qualcomm or your EOD.
- 24:43They take care of all that stuff, and it
- 24:45comes out of your check every week,
- 24:48but it's very minimal.
- 24:49Where you would be paying $2,000 for
- 24:52insurance as a new owner-operator per
- 24:54month
- 24:56on a $70,000 truck, it's around 50 bucks
- 25:00a week, which means about $200 a month.
- 25:03You're saving yourself $1,800. That
- 25:05$1,800 can go in your pocket. As far as
- 25:09the trailer, when you go to rent a
- 25:10trailer with your own authority, you
- 25:12either rent it or you buy it, that's a
- 25:14that's a that's a percentage down or the
- 25:17rent of the trailer, which is any
- 25:19usually around a thousand dollars, let's
- 25:22say. It's cuz it's usually a base cost
- 25:24and they and they charge you like, I
- 25:26don't know, 11 cents or something per
- 25:28mile. You're paying a thousand dollars,
- 25:31well, Oakley gives you the trailer. So,
- 25:32you're saving another thousand dollars
- 25:34that you would be paying if you had your
- 25:36own authority, that's going in your
- 25:37pocket. You kind of get what I'm I'm
- 25:40getting at. Owner op with your own
- 25:43authority is good if you have the money
- 25:47to do it. If your capital is limited,
- 25:51then you go on with signing on with a
- 25:53carrier.
- 25:55You got to swallow your pride. We have
- 25:57this burning sensation inside of us that
- 25:59if we don't have our own authority, we
- 26:02don't book our own loads.
- 26:04We don't do everything ourselves, we're
- 26:07not a true owner operator or we really,
- 26:10really are not our own business or our
- 26:13own boss. That's not true. And whoever's
- 26:16telling you that or if you ever hear
- 26:19that on YouTube or on any kind anywhere,
- 26:21don't believe it. It's not true.
- 26:24Yes.
- 26:25Is there a lot more freedom?
- 26:28It is. Is it a lot more of a headache?
- 26:31Absolutely.
- 26:33You got to keep up with your permits.
- 26:35You got to make sure you're paying your
- 26:37fuel card. You got to make sure you're
- 26:39putting away your You got to put away
- 26:40your taxes anyways here, but you got to
- 26:42put away your taxes. You got to make
- 26:44sure your payments are coming out for
- 26:46your insurance. You know, you got to
- 26:48sign up and you got to
- 26:50send over paperwork to your factoring
- 26:53company, you got to make phone calls to
- 26:55your dispatcher. If you don't have a
- 26:56dispatcher, you got to spend all day
- 26:58looking for your next load. This is a
- 27:00fact. I've done it for 2 years and it's
- 27:03miserable. Never got a chance to watch
- 27:05any movies while I was out on the road.
- 27:07Even when I was at home for home time, I
- 27:10was digging in the load board trying to
- 27:12find my next three loads so I can stack
- 27:14them. So, when I came out from home
- 27:16time, I was ready to go. That could take
- 27:18a day, that could take 2 days. When
- 27:20you're at home trying to spend time with
- 27:21your family, your dogs, and your kids,
- 27:24and all that, and you're sitting there
- 27:25spending multiple hours looking for
- 27:28loads and trying to stack loads and set
- 27:30up loads from you going from point A to
- 27:32point B, from point B to point Z, and
- 27:34point Z to point D.
- 27:36And not only that, all your yearly stuff
- 27:38that comes around.
- 27:40And so, there's there's just so much
- 27:42stuff
- 27:44and responsibility,
- 27:46it takes the life out of you. Now,
- 27:48you're you'll be better uh equipped to
- 27:51handle something like that if you have
- 27:53like a wife that's in it with you 100%.
- 27:55She takes care of all that and you out
- 27:57here driving, she takes care of all the
- 27:59paperwork and everything else. That's a
- 28:02team effort. You can make it like that,
- 28:04but you still have to have the capital
- 28:06get to get started. If you don't have
- 28:08the capital, like I said, you go get a
- 28:10truck, get your 2290, and get signed on
- 28:13with the company.
- 28:14It's that simple.
- 28:15Like I told you, over here at Oakley,
- 28:17they take care of everything. If you go
- 28:19back and look at some of my videos,
- 28:21you'll see how much I'm making over
- 28:22here. It might not be what it is
- 28:25for an owner-operator
- 28:27with his own authority, but his cost per
- 28:30mile is way more than mine. So, he needs
- 28:32to make that money to make up the
- 28:34difference.
- 28:35But, you always got to find out what is
- 28:36he taking home, actually taking home
- 28:38after all his yearly, after all his
- 28:41monthly expenses, after all his fuel.
- 28:44And that's another thing, you got to get
- 28:45a fuel card and fuel cards that you get
- 28:48from either the your factoring company
- 28:51or wherever you get them from, the
- 28:53discounts aren't that great because a
- 28:54lot of those companies
- 28:56are built to earn money
- 29:00off your off your fuel. So, instead of
- 29:02giving you they might give you let's say
- 29:04at a fuel station they give you 30 cents
- 29:08off on the on the fuel.
- 29:10Bro, they're getting like 50 cents off.
- 29:12So, every gallon that you're pumping
- 29:14they're getting 20 cents. Now, just
- 29:15think if they had 5,000 people
- 29:18using their card.
- 29:21How many How many 5,000 people how many
- 29:23people are pumping per day? And they're
- 29:25they're they're yanking 20 cents off of
- 29:27their what they're pumping and paying
- 29:29for. But, over here at Oakley they give
- 29:31you the full discount. You get You get
- 29:33the whole discount.
- 29:35They're not pulling anything out. So,
- 29:37when you when it it comes down to it,
- 29:40how much are they really taking home?
- 29:41About the same as I do or the next man
- 29:43or the next man that signed on with a
- 29:44carrier? You got to think about it.
- 29:47Got to swallow our pride. It's still an
- 29:49owner-operator. This is not a lease
- 29:50purchase.
- 29:52You know, and there's I'm not knocking
- 29:53any lease purchase, but there's there's
- 29:56you know, you truly never own own the
- 29:57truck. You might be on a $1 buyout, but
- 29:59the $1 buyout is for a 2019. It's
- 30:02already got 800,000 miles on it.
- 30:05You know?
- 30:06They're trying to When you have a decent
- 30:08truck and you got a new model and that
- 30:10and that lease is almost up, it's not a
- 30:12dollar buyout.
- 30:14It's not a dollar buyout. You're going
- 30:16to pay on top of that. So, it's just
- 30:18like buying a truck, but
- 30:19trust me, when you're paying
- 30:22$1,200 to $1,400 a week
- 30:26for your truck payment on a lease
- 30:27purchase,
- 30:29you can go get your own truck and you'll
- 30:31pay 2,500
- 30:33for the whole month. If you go lease
- 30:35purchase,
- 30:36you're paying $1,200 to $1,400 a week.
- 30:39How much is that? 4,800 to 5,200.
- 30:434,800 to 5,200. If you just go out and
- 30:46buy your own truck and just go for it,
- 30:48you'll be able to save yourself another
- 30:50couple thousand dollars versus going
- 30:52lease purchase.
- 30:54It's not as hard as you think. You'll be
- 30:56surprised. Once you have the truck,
- 30:57you're like, "Oh I really got my
- 30:59own truck."
- 31:01And you start yourself
- 31:02because now whatever you thought was not
- 31:06possible is now possible and it is
- 31:08actually came true. You have the truck.
- 31:10It's sitting in your driveway and you're
- 31:12ready to rock. Now you're like, "Oh, I
- 31:14didn't even I didn't even think I would
- 31:16even get a truck." But now you got a
- 31:18truck. Don't be scared. Face your fears.
- 31:20Go for it. The worst thing that can
- 31:22happen is you walk into a dealer and
- 31:24they tell you no. You know what you do
- 31:26after that? You go to the next dealer
- 31:28and see what he says. You know what you
- 31:30do after that if he says no? Same thing.
- 31:33Until you find somebody that's willing
- 31:34to work. It's like we got two new
- 31:36recruits.
- 31:38So, two new guys in orientation.
- 31:41And they both got their
- 31:43trucks from Arrow Truck Sales.
- 31:46Easy to get into a truck, guys. I don't
- 31:48know why
- 31:49you guys think it's so difficult.
- 31:51Oakley works with these guys and
- 31:54look at those trucks. Beautiful.
- 31:56Especially for your first truck.
- 31:58Can't complain about that.
- 32:00Dealers out there that have banks that
- 32:03take more of a risk. Yes, if you're
- 32:06looking for a 2.9 APR on your on your
- 32:09semi truck, it's not going to happen,
- 32:11especially if it's your first truck. So,
- 32:13just swallow it. It's usually like 19,
- 32:1615, 12, 11, just depending on how good
- 32:19your credit is.
- 32:21But you got a truck and you're making
- 32:23tons of money and you're making more
- 32:25money than you are as a company driver,
- 32:28a lease purchase driver,
- 32:30or whatever or whatever you're doing
- 32:32right now. So, think about it. You know,
- 32:35just go for it. With that all being
- 32:37said,
- 32:39if you seen my other videos, you know
- 32:40how much I'm making here at Oakley. If
- 32:42you haven't seen them, go back and look
- 32:44at them. I usually come out with one
- 32:46every month showing my statements or
- 32:48just showing how much I made for the
- 32:50month. If you're really interested,
- 32:52reach out to me.
- 32:53I'll put my email right here. It's
- 32:55[email protected].
- 32:58I'll also put it down in the description
- 32:59below. I've had tons of people already
- 33:02reach out to me
- 33:03and I've got them connected with Oakley.
- 33:06The best recruiter at Oakley is my
- 33:08recruiter. Everybody that calls me will
- 33:11talk to him. Give it a shot. Don't be
- 33:14shy. You ain't got nothing to lose.
- 33:16Why are you continuing to put yourself
- 33:18through a situation where that you don't
- 33:20like? Now, if you like your job, you
- 33:22know, disregard all everything that I'm
- 33:24saying. I'm not talking to you.
- 33:27I'm glad you're here, but I'm not
- 33:28talking. I'm talking for the people that
- 33:31are just stuck where they're at and they
- 33:34feel like they can't move or they can't
- 33:36grow or they can't move on from the
- 33:38company that they're already at. It's
- 33:40time to wake up. And on top of that, you
- 33:43already know the fuel prices are getting
- 33:45crazy. So, you need to be somewhere
- 33:47where you're getting a good fuel
- 33:49discount.
- 33:50And speaking of fuel, Oakley
- 33:54thrives when the fuel prices are high
- 33:57because all the mom-and-pop trucking
- 34:00companies
- 34:01can't run when the fuel prices are super
- 34:04high. So, Oakley
- 34:07their freight or their raw material, all
- 34:10the stuff that we pick up
- 34:12starts moving. We get more loads than we
- 34:15can handle. So, we need more people over
- 34:18here to be a part of that. So, like I
- 34:21said, reach out to me, vlogpermile. When
- 34:23you do that, leave your name and your
- 34:25number.
- 34:26I will reach out to you personally.
- 34:29I call personally and I talk to you
- 34:32first. see if it's something that you're
- 34:34really interested in, and once that
- 34:36happens, I I hand over your information
- 34:39to my recruiter, and he calls you and
- 34:41sends you even more information. Um like
- 34:44I said, there might be other places that
- 34:48pay more,
- 34:50but nobody's telling you.
- 34:52And not only that, even if I knew
- 34:53somewhere that that paid more money, I
- 34:55just like the environment here. And I
- 34:57know a lot of truck companies say that,
- 34:59"Oh, we have a family environment."
- 35:02This is, I mean, a thousand
- 35:04owner-operators, and when you walk in
- 35:06that office, they know your name.
- 35:09Come on, man.
- 35:11It's nothing like it.
- 35:12Everybody's real kind. Oakley drivers
- 35:14help Oakley drivers. Busted down on the
- 35:16side of the road, you know, we all help
- 35:19each other. You know, it's a family. Not
- 35:22everybody gets along, but for the most
- 35:24part, all the drivers here are family.
- 35:28And if that's something you're
- 35:29interested in, then I'm telling you,
- 35:30man, reach out to me. Anyway, we're
- 35:32going to bust down on this note. So, I
- 35:34went ahead and I dropped those uh
- 35:36aluminum cones down in uh down in Axis,
- 35:40Alabama.
- 35:42After that, I wrote I went up to
- 35:43Alabama, another spot in Alabama, and I
- 35:45picked up uh I picked up some
- 35:47lightweight.
- 35:48That's going over here to uh up in
- 35:51Arkansas. I'm going to drop that off.
- 35:52Most likely, I'll go home, but knowing
- 35:55my dispatcher, we'll grab something for
- 35:58me to take home so I can drop off on
- 35:59Monday.
- 36:01And I'd like to say thank you so much to
- 36:04everybody who subscribed, liked, and
- 36:08commented on my videos. I truly love the
- 36:11interaction.
- 36:12Um and I'll continue to to respond to
- 36:15all those uh comments and questions as
- 36:18much as I can. As the channel grows,
- 36:20it'll be harder to do that, but we'll
- 36:22figure it out some way. So, until then,
- 36:25be safe out there, and I'll see you guys
- 36:27next time.
